Earth Layer’s Power Point

I can use a model to explain the layers of the Earth.

Journal Set Up• Using pages 74-75 you will be completing the Layers of the Earth foldable• You will need to have a one inch column going down the left side and a one

in column going down the right side. • The large middle column is for your layer pieces. • For each layer on the left you will describe the state of matter and the

composition of layer. On the right you will record the thickness. • It will look like this.

What are the layers of the Earth?

Okay let’s move on… Now in 6th grade you learned about the layers of the earth in order. But this year we are going more in depth about the layers and how they impact the MOVEMENT of the Earth.

Earth’s Crust• We are going to begin with the Crust. Using a blue and brown

crayon/marker/colored pencil. Color in the crust appropriately.• Label this underneath as

CRUST/ LITHOSPHERE • In the left column, record the state of matter and the composition ( what it is

made ) of the Crust. • In the right column, record the thickness of the crust• Underneath your crust piece explain the difference between oceanic and

continental crust.• You can use this site here

Earth’s Mantle

• Earth’s Mantle is broken into three separate parts ( Upper Mantle, Middle Mantle, and Lower Mantle).

• Color the layers as demonstrated below• Upper Mantle- Yellow • Middle Mantle- Light Orange • Lower Mantle- Orange

Earth’s Mantle Continued

• In the left column describe the state of matter of the mantle and it’s composition (what its made of)

• In the right column, record the thickness of the mantle.

Earth’s Outer Core

• Color the outer core piece red orange. • Tape this just below the mantle piece. • In the left column, describe the composition

of the outer core and its state of matter. • In the right column, record the thickness

Earth’s Core

• Color the inner core piece RED• In the left column, describe the composition

and the state of the matter of the inner core. • In the right column, record the thickness. • Somewhere in your inner core box answer

why the inner core is solid.

Final Question

• At the bottom of your Earth’s layers diagram answer the question….how do we know what the layers of the Earth look like?
