The 1st European University Futsal
Championship took place in Paralimni
/ Cyprus from September 19th – 24th,
2004. 12 university teams from 10 Eu-
ropean countries participated in the
event, which was hosted by the Cyprus
University Sports Federation.
Almost all the teams arrived in Cyprus by plane. They were
collected by buses and brought to Paralimni, where they
were accommodated in the high standard TETYK hotel
with beautiful surroundings (swimming pool, beach). Dele-
gations used apartments each with 4 persons in 2 rooms.
The first technical meeting was organised on September
18th at 21:00 at the TETYK hotel conference room. During
this meeting the draw was done and the decisions on the
competition and training schedule were made. On the fol-
lowing meetings, which were held every evening, the team
delegates and the EUSA Technical Delegate Mr. Antonis
Petrou analysed the following issues: logistic aspects; ref-
erees; medical assistance; match reports. The results of
the games and the list of players with cautions were dis-
tributed at the meeting. They were published also on the
official website: www.cyprusfutsal.org every evening.
The Opening Ceremony was held
on September 18th at 18.00, fol-
lowed by the first match. Teams
paraded into the venue, some
with the flag of their university.
Welcome speeches were made
by the President of the OC mr.
Dinos Pavlou, by a represent-
ative of the National Ministry
of Education and by the EUSA
President, mr. Enno Harms.
The playing system at the Championship was according to
the EUSA Technical regulations. The teams were divided
into 4 groups; the winners of the groups qualified in the
semifinals; while the others had to fight for the placement
from the 5th place on. The competition took place in the
new sports hall, while the trainings could be held at two
pitches with artificial grass and plastic surface near the ho-
tel, where the teams were accomodated.

During the event, transportation was organised by busses
which circulated after a fixed and published schedule which
was adapted according to the game schedule. The busses
could also be used by players who wanted to watch other
games.
All the meals were taken at the hotel. The food was fresh,
good quality and variety. Two hot meals were served daily.
The meal timings were tailored to meet player needs. Veg-
etarian meals could be ordered. Water was made avail-
able in the restaurant and in the competition venue for the
players throughout the event.
All participants were presented with tourist information on
Cyprus and the region of Paralimni. On Tuesday evening,
all team officials were invited to a dinner by local authori-
ties of Avgorou. On Wednesday (free day after the pool
games) the OC organised an excursion to Lefkosia with a
typical Cyprus meal for lunch.
The Closing Ceremony was held at 22.00 on September
24th after the finals in the hotel garden. The ceremony,
which was very pleasant, contained the traditional speech-
es, the medal awards ceremony and a subsequent cultural
programme. The highest authority present was the Mayor
of Paralimni.
The President of the European University Sports Associa-
tion mr. Enno Harms thanked and congratulated the Or-
ganising Committee for managing to stage such a profes-
sional, enjoyable and high standard event.
