BUREL FACTORY.

THE STORY OF A MOUNTAIN,

FITS ALL IN A FACTORY.

Serra da Estrela appeared to us as a mirage in a panorama weakened by the crisis that left the interior of Portugal very fragile.

We intervene. Today we are more than 100 people, we revived a village, a factory and promoted a culture that thought it was forgotten by time.

It was the year of 2006 when we let ourselves be freed by Serra da Estrela. Exploratory mountain hikes have revealed a vast natural and cultural heritage that longed for its discovery. We came face to face with a region that had been affected by the abandonment of the wool industry that has always sustained its populations.

In the quest to invest in Serra da Estrela, which in fact would have started with the discovery and requalification of an old sanatorium, that had became Casa das Penhas Douradas, the brand’s first hotel. This requalification that was intended to follow the local tradition of wool and burel, led to a new discovery that would weave the path of the brand until today: the discovery of the factory that was languishing in relation to the progress of contemporary times and it could not keep up with it.

We recovered the machines of the 19th century and the people who brought the ancient knowledge of the treatment of wool from generations, the burel wool. We gave it colour, art, shape and value to the fabric. We crossed the old patterns with bold and modern portuguese design and followed a path that continues today.

It has been the Burel Factory since 2012. Factory of wool tales, of burel, culture, people and history.

The factory continues to operate in the same way as it did in the 19th century, a traditional process aimed at strengthening the identity and quality of the product. It holds the entire wool transformation process, from carding, spinning, weaving and design. It produces three types of wool fabrics, Burel, Mantecas (blankets, scarves and scarves) and Lanificios Império (clothing fabrics).

A project recovered from heritage and enhancement of one of the Portuguese regions that has added more stories to history itself.

BUREL FABRIC.

VERSATILITY, STRENGHT, COLOUR

AND TEXTURE

The versatility of the burel fabric and its high strength are extremely valued features due to its multiplicity of applications, which leads it to resist traction, rupture, pressure and light exposure, supporting intensive use, without changing colour and shape. It’s water repellent, thermal and very easy to maintain. Comes with more than 80 colours and in 4 different weights, 450gr, 600gr, 800gr and 1400gr, depending on its application. In the execution of burel pieces it is used Bordaleira sheep wool, an indigenous species which has longer wool, perfect to be weaved into burel fabric; and merino wool, a breed originally from the south of the Iberian peninsula, with shorter and softer wool, occasionally used in blankets and scarves.

We recovered a vast collection of fabrics: wool, flannels, meltons, tweeds, tartans, bouclés, among others. Our intervention was made in order to bring these high quality fabrics back to life, to make them have a place in today ’s market. Most of them maintain the original manufacturing process, which we decided on, for the sake of ensuring the quality and history to the product.

MANTECAS

Mantecas is the brand of our blankets, shawls and scarves, which kept some of the mesmerising patterns from the old design books we found in the remains of the factory, upon its recovery. Wool fabrics, made on ancient looms and finished by hand, with or without fringes. Today, its application is vast, and extended to areas such as fashion and design, with the fabric being used for making coats and many other pieces. A versatility guaranteed by the multiple options of patterns and colours, and by the wool quality, certified by nature.
