ASantaFenative,AnthonyE.MartinezhasproducedfinewoodworkbasedonauthenticSpanishcolonialarts,whichoriginatedinnorthernNewMexico,forthirtyyears.Hiscareful,life-longstudyofthecolonialperiodiconographywasfirstinspired,ironically,bytheperversepractice,prevalentinthe1950s,ofpeoplethrowingouttheirantiquehand-carvedfurnituretomakeroomforthethen-popularkitschplasticversions.Asayoungchild,Martinezwasabletorecognizethebeautyoftheolderclassicstylesandbegantoreadupontheavailableliterature.AnthonyMartinezhascometoseehismissionasnotjusttofaithfullyreproducetheSpanishcolonialdesigns,butalsotore-educatetheindigenousHispanicpopulationwhohavecometotaketheworkforgranted.Martinezwouldliketoseethisvaluableheritagecontinuetobepassedontofuturegenerationsofthepeoplewhooriginallycreatedit.
