EU Food Legislation

Regulation 178/2002 applies to all stages of production and distribution of food and feed

It defines traceability as the ability to trace and follow a food, feed, food-producing animal or substance intended to be or expected to be incorporated into a food or feed through all stages of production, processing or distribution

EU Food Legislation (cont.)

Article 18 establishes traceability at all stages of food production, processing and distribution between all Trading Partners throughout the Supply Chain

Requires food or feed to be adequately labelled or identified to facilitate its traceability

The Bioterrorism Act

FDA regulations require the establishment and maintenance of records by persons who manufacture, process, pack, transport, distribute, receive, hold, or import food intended for human and animal consumption in the United States

Such records are to allow for the identification of the immediate previous sources and the immediate subsequent recipients of food.

In Conclusion Identification must be accurately applied and recorded . A link between all players in the Supply Chain must be guaranteed It is the responsibility of each company to manage the links one up,

one down and internally . Accuracy of data recording and speed of retrieval are key

elements. Cost effectiveness is crucial. GS1 Guidelines for Traceability Available. It is up to the trading partners to decide what additional data to

transmit and what to record . Challenges of infrastructure still about and have to be addressed

and dealt with.
