HD
Interesting FTA HD package on Astra satellites – Anixe HD, Arte HD, Astra HD demo channels on 19.2E & 23.5E
Astra satellite is the only one way to receive HDTV television programs throughout the entire Slovakian territory
HDTV offer via Astra satellites will grow in the near future
Sales of LCD and plasma screens are increasing rapidly. People are requiring reliable, digital TV content also in HD quality
Why HD via satellite?
 Satellite HD
Satellite is the only way to receive HDTV television programs (from the day one) throughout the entire country
Satellite provides immediate access to large bandwidths Satellite offers national or regional coverage with a single beam, low set-up overheads By 2010, the ASTRA satellites alone will be transmitting around 100 HD channels in
Europe
 Cable HD
Due to limited bandwidth, cable cannot support the diversity and quality of high-definition programming available via satellite
16/02/2009 19
programming available via satellite National coverage involves different cable networks and there are high set-up costs for
network operators and broadcasters By 2010 it’s possible that around 21 to 27 European HD channels will be delivered by
cable.
 Terrestrial HD
The scarcity of terrestrial bandwidth limits the potential of HD for free-to-air broadcasters High coverage requires very high investments into infrastructure (digital terrestrial
transmitters) A national infrastructure of repeaters will be required and only national DTT broadcasters
will be able to afford the significant set-up costs Technical reach in rural areas limited As a result, terrestrial TV in Europe will provide the lowest number of HD channels:
potentially between 4 and 14 by 2010
