Misplacing Modifiers

“SOME ,MODIFIERS ESPECIALY SIMPLE MODIFIERS-ONLY,JUST,NEARLY,BARELY-HAVE A BAD HABIT OF SLIPPPING INTO THE WRONG PLACE IN A SENTENCE.”(WHAT DOES “BARELY KICK” MEAN?)

He Barely kicked the ball twenty yards.

CONFUSION

HE KICKED THAT BALL BARELY TWENTY YARDS

REPAIR WORK

DANGLING MODIFIERS

When a modifier improperly modifies something, it is called a “dangling modifier.”

CONFUSION

Changing the oil every 3,000 miles, there is an easy way to keep your car running smoothly.

Repair Work

If we change the oil every 3,000 miles, we can keep our car running smoothly.

Comparative/superlative

The two basic ways to compare are using …as or than.

Examples She’s twice as old as her sister. He’s not as stupid as he looks! It’s much colder today than it was yesterday.

I find science more difficult than mathematics.

CONCLUSION

When using your modifiers correctly it will make your writing better or easier to understand.=D
