Green building is the practice of increasing theefficiency with which buildings use resources energy, water, and materials whilereducing building impacts on human health andthe environment, through better sitting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, and
removal the complete building life cycle.
Effective green building can lead to1) reduced operating costs by increasing
productivity and using less energy and water,2) improved public and occupant health due to
improved indoor air quality, and3) reduced environmental impacts by, for example,
lessening storm water runoff and the heateffect.

1New materials :- Green roofs
- Glass (silkscreen on glass)
- Hempcrete (made from natural materials, being non-toxic, and providing energy efficiency.Formed into foot-thick walls on a wooden frame, the material eliminates the need for bothinsulation and sheet rock. Such walls are
breathable and have a pleasant, naturalappearance, as well as the ability to alleviate
noise pollution from the outer world.)

The Leadership in Energy and EnvironmentalDesign (LEED) Green Building Rating System, developed by the U.S Green Council (USGBC),provides a suite of standards for environmentallysustainable construction.
Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED addresses allbuilding types and emphasizes state-of-the-artstrategies in five areas: sustainable site
development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoorenvironmental quality.

LEED was created to accomplishthe following:
Define green building" byestablishing a common standard ofmeasurement
Promote integrated, whole-building design practices
Recognize environmentalleadership in the building industry
Stimulate green competition
Raise consumer awareness ofgreen building benefits
Transform the building market

Green Building Council members, representingevery sector of the building industry, developed and
continue to refine LEED. The rating systemaddresses six major areas:
Site planning
Water management
Energy and atmosphere
Materials and resources
Indoor environmental quality
Innovation and design process

WHAT IS THE GREEN BUILDING INDEX?
The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysias industry recognised green ratingtool for buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and raiseawareness among Developers, Architects, Engineers, Planners, Designers,Contractors and the Public about environmental issues and our responsibilityto the future generations. The GBI rating tool provides an opportunity for developers and building ownersto design and construct green, sustainable buildings that can provide energysavings, water savings, a healthier indoor environment, better connectivity topublic transport and the adoption of recycling and greenery for their projectsand reduce our impact on the environment.

GBI is developed specifically for the Malaysian-tropical climate, environmental and developmental
context, cultural and social needs and is created to:
Define green buildings by establishing a commonlanguage and standard of measurement;
Promote integrated, whole-building designs that
provides a better environment for all; Recognise and reward environmental leadership;
Transform the built environment to reduce its negativeenvironmental impact; and
Ensure new buildings remain relevant in the future
and existing buildings are refurbished and upgradedto improve the overall quality of our building stock.

3THE GBI RATING SYSTEM
BUILDINGS WILL BE AWARDED THE GBI RATINGBASED ON 6 KEY CRITERIA:
1 Energy Efficiency (EE)
2 Indoor Environmental Quality (EQ)
3 Sustainable Site Planning & Management (SM)
4 Material and Resources (MR)
5 Water Efficiency (WE)
6 Innovation (IN)
1) Energy Efficiency (EE)Improve energy consumption by optimising building orientation,
minimizing solar heat gain through the building envelope, harvestingnatural lighting, adopting the best practices in building services includinguse of renewable energy, and ensuring proper testing, commissioningand regular maintenance.

3THE GBI RATING SYSTEM2) Indoor Environment Quality (EQ)Achieve good quality performance in indoor air quality, acoustics, visual andthermal comfort. These will involve the use of low volatile organic compound
materials, application of quality air filtration, proper control of air temperature, movement and humidity.3) Sustainable Site Planning & Management (SM)Selecting appropriate sites with planned access to public transportation, community services, open spaces and landscaping. Avoiding and conservingenvironmentally sensitive areas through the redevelopment of existing sites
and brownfields. Implementing proper construction management, storm watermanagement and reducing the strain on existing infrastructure capacity.4) Materials & Resources (MR)Promote the use of environment-friendly materials sourced from sustainablesources and recycling. Implement proper construction waste management withstorage, collection and re-use of recyclables and construction formwork andwaste.5) Water Efficiency (WE)Rainwater harvesting, water recycling and water-saving fittings.6) Innovation (IN)Innovative design and initiatives that meet the
objectives of the GBI.

Eco-design is designing in such a way that thehuman built environment integrates benignly andseamlessly with the natural environment. Both thehuman-made and the natural must blend together, sothere will be no pollution, no waste, no detrimentalconsequences on the environment.
Dr. Ken Yeang, architect
We all have responsibility. That
think globally act locally thatsover used so much, its real, weall must take action.
