Green Habitat:explorinG arcHitecture of laurie baker Naresh Chhatwani | Padmakumar | P.B.Sajan
Naresh Chhatwani is a graduate of CEPT University, having completed Masters in Theory and Design. His area of interest is Low Cost Construction Techniques, Sustainable Practices of Habitat and Contemporary Indian Architecture. He has worked with Laurie Baker.Padmakumar, an architect began his career at COSTFORD under the guidance of Laurie Baker and also worked at HUDCO. He has done his higher studies at Institute of Housing Studies, Rotterdam on Inner City Revitalization and Urban Heritage.P.B.Sajan, Chief Architect and Joint Director at COSTFORD is the Member Secretary of the Board of Governors of the LBC. He has worked closely with Laurie Baker for nearly 25 years. His current focus is research on using mud and bamboo as an alternative to high energy consuming building materials.
The objective of the workshop is to impart knowledge in Green Habitat that will include cost-effective and affordable building construction, alternatives in energy, waste management, as well as economic and social issues related to Green Economy. The five day workshop will be a combination of lectures/presentations, hands-on experience, field visits and audio-visual sessions. Students will be exposed to natural materials of construction like – mud, bamboo, lime and rubble. Students will learn alternatives in construction practices that are cost-effective, environment friendly and aesthetically appealing building construction techniques along with topics in habitat studies.
The hands-on experience will be in masonry using mud, bricks and rubble. The students will gain awareness by working on construction techniques which were pioneered by Laurie Baker, including rat trap bond walls, filler slab roofing, brick jali, patch-pointing, exposed brickwork, fired bricks or mud blocks stabilized with lime and rice husks for masonry. They will also get exposure of working with renewable building materials such as bamboo, which is used as reinforcement for the foundations with lime concrete or for slabs where bamboo is used in an exposed form with concrete on top. Field visits will consist of visit to colonies, institutions and selected buildings constructed by Laurie Baker and COSTFORD. There will be guest lectures by prominent experts followed by interactive discussion sessions on energy considerations in architecture and building construction, climate responsive architecture and Green Habitat.
