Identifying Direct and Indirect

Objects in English

Subject: performs the action of the sentence.

Verb: is the action of the sentence.

Direct Object: receives the action of the verb

Indirect Object: benefits from the action received by the direct object.

How do you find the indirect object in a sentence?

State the direct object of the sentence and then ask:

to whom? or to what?or

for whom? or for what?

• Step one: Read the sentence. Right click and choose the pointer to make marks on the slides.

• Step two: Circle and label the subject of the sentence.

• Step three: Underline and label the verb of the sentence.

• Step four: Circle and label the direct object.

• Step five: Circle and label the indirect object

• Step six: Click to the next slide to check your work.
