PRESIDENT’S COMMENT
Sue and I caught up with President John on Friday evening
and while he may need some assistance to get in and out of
VGC, he is planning to come back and reclaim his position at
the head table on Thursday 21st. I’m sure we are all looking
forwarded to welcoming him back.
John has sent a note to David Lea for inclusion in this edition.
Last Wednesday night, Geoff Stockdale, Malcolm Sawle, Da-
vid Lea, Tony McKenna, Trish and I attended the welcome
home dinner for the 2012 GSE team to Malaysia led by Ker-
rie Geard.
It was amazing to hear the team members Michael Johnson,
Peter Schmidt, Jade Lovell and Kylie McMillan talk about their
experiences but the real difference was the increased confi-
dence and presentation skills compared to their pre-departure
performance and all commented on the recognition of the
broader opportunities available to them as a result of this trip. Those members going to conference in Wangaratta will have
the opportunity to hear them. Kerrie was lauded for her ex-
cellent leadership – well done Kerrie.
What a magnifi-
cent day yesterday
(Sunday) was for a
barbeque. Kids
having their face
painted, a man
dressed in yellow
and red making
anything from dogs
to aliens with bal-
loons and seven
Rotarians cooking sausages and onions and handing them out
for free.
The Black Rock Playground was the venue. Following the re-
cent upgrade to the park the Bayside Council arranged a
“soft opening”. Reopened over the Christmas Holiday period, this playground has gone from a tired and neglected looking
play space, to a brand-spanking-new pirate themed park.

racks, plus the original barbeques donated by the Rotary
Club of Beaumaris.
The Mayor, Stephen Hartney joined Roy and Pat Seager,
Trish Smythe, Glenda Laughton, Peter Flude, Michael
Hede, David Greenall and yours truly in the cooking and
distribution of 300 sausages.
The new Rotary tent was in full view of Beach and Bluff
roads and the opportunity to promote Rotary in the com-
munity and hand out information on Rotary and the Bay-
side Mayoral Golf day was too good to pass up. Thanks
guys, well done.
Tuesday night RCOB is hosting the District New Genera-
tions meeting at “The Beaumaris”. We are expecting
about 60 people including the DG Brian Martin and the
DGE Merv Ericson.
All the speakers are young people talking about their
experiences with Rotary programs including: Rotary Youth
Program of Enrichment (RYPEN), Camp Awakenings (no
acronym), Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), Rota-
ry Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), National Youth Sci-
ence Forum (NYSF), the year 10 Four Way Test public
speaking contest, Rotary Youth Exchange and Rotaract.
Back to a normal at VGC next week – see you there.

FROM THE PRESIDENT’S BED
Home at last! And I am receiving very good care fromSue, who has taken a couple of week’s carer’s leave tolook after me.
It has been a long process (15 days since I broke my legin Bali), but I now have a 12” titanium rod screwed intomy tibia and I can get around on crutches (just!). I cannotweight bear on my right leg for another 5 weeks, so thatis restricting things quite a bit.
Anyway, I am slowly but surely on the mend, and I amvery much looking forward to getting back into my
“Presidential duties”. There is a good chance (pendingcarer’s approval of course!) that I will be able to attendour meeting at VGC on 21st Feb, when Huntingdale Rota-ry Club will join us.
I would like to take this opportunity to pass on my sincerethanks to everyone that has wished me well. And thankyou for the wonderful “get well” card – very much ap-preciated.
Our Almoner Harry is certainly on top of things – while hewas in the process of moving house he called in to see meand provide me with a bottle of what looks like an excel-lent “traditional Scottish remedy for fractured limbs”. Iam sure it will do the trick.
A big thank you to PE Bob and the team for keeping theRotary wheel turning at RCOB
Best wishes
President John
