Keeping Holdingford/St. Stephen Home sweet Home
Helping Hands exists for the purpose of helping seniors stay in their homes
for as long as it is safely viable. We are continually investigating new services
that might contribute to this goal.
Within this issue you will read about everything from a new weekly lunch pro-
gram in St. Stephen to free grocery delivery in Holdingford and the possibility
of bus service in Holdingford (all are available to everyone, not just seniors).
Here are some insights on each of these programs:
St. Stephen Weekly Lunch: Socialization is the single most important con-
tributor to life satisfaction. With the addition of this program, we now offer
four regular lunch/socialization events in Holdingford and St. Stephen. See details on Page
7, and please join us and bring a friend starting March 6. We thank Bennie and Dorothy
Paggen at the Rusty Nail for supporting this program.
Coborn’s Delivers: Whether you don’t like driving or you just want to save the gas, this
program can help. Simply put together your grocery order (small or large) and bring it to
Helping Hands based on the regular weekly deadlines. We will place your order with others
and it will be delivered to our office on the designated Monday for you to pick up between
1:00—2:00. See details on Page 2. Home deliveries can be arranged for those physically
unable to drive to our office.
Local bus service: We are studying the need for a local bus service one day a week within
Holdingford and between Holdingford and Albany or St. Cloud. We are working with the Tri-
CAP agency on this project so you might get a call asking your opinion. If you know this is
something that you would use please contact us directly as there are ridership requirements
we need to project and achieve to sustain the program. There would be a slight cost for
each ride ($1—$3 depending on distance).
Home health care equipment program: We have expanded the number of wheelchairs,
walkers, bathtub seats and other equipment that we have available. When you or a loved
ones needs something for a short term recovery give us a call first before you purchase something. Or if you have equipment you are no longer using let us know and we can add it
to our program. This program is supported by the Holdingford American Legion. There is no
cost for using the equipment through this program.
Construction continues on our Community and Adult Day Center. Call us now if you want
more information on the day services the center will provide area seniors.

Live Well at Home Network can help you
The Live Well at Home Program was developed by the Min-
nesota Board on Aging to help senior adults create a plan for
being safe at home and reducing the risks that could cause them to move from home. The website will help develop a
personal plan to find your way to lifelong community living.
A simple quiz uses four easy steps to focus your time, effort,
and money on the things that matter most to you. Go to
mnlivewellathome.org to get started.
Free Delivery of Groceries to Holdingford
Helping Hands Outreach, in cooperation
with Cobornsdelivers.com, is offering free grocery delivery to anyone in Holdingford
starting in March. Groceries will be deliv-
ered to the Helping Hands office on the
second and fourth Monday of each month
for local pick-up. All weekly specials are
available for purchase, plus there are ad-
ditional website specials. Use the listings
on corbornsdelivers.com to create your grocery list. However, do not place your order on
the website, call or bring it to Helping Hands Outreach. If you do not have access to the In-
ternet contact Helping Hands Outreach and we can assist you. You will need to pay for the
order when you place it with Helping Hands. To receive free delivery you must place your
order through Helping Hands. The free delivery program is for everyone.

Eating Right as We Age by Eve Lees
Age-associated changes in metabolism can affect how
our bodies process the food we eat. After age 30, met-
abolic rate begins to slow. Lean body mass (muscle)
decreases and body fat increases. You can slow the
rate of decline with proper diet and regular physical
activity. However, even with these pre-emptive
measures, some metabolic slowing still occurs.
The Johns Hopkins Medical Letter suggests the following dietary precautions, for those 50
years or older:
Calories:
Be sure you're getting a sufficient amount to fuel your daily needs. With a slower metabolic
rate, older adults don't need as many daily calories as a younger person. However, many
older adults consume far less than they should be getting. Low calories can lead to fatigue, depression and weak immune systems.
Protein:
• This vital nutrient is less efficiently used as we age. More protein is needed by the older
adult than is recommended for younger people. Health professionals recommend about 100
grams daily for the average older male and 80 grams for the average female. However, too
much protein can overwork the kidneys and cause urinary problems.
Vitamins and minerals:
• The B complex vitamins, vitamin D, and minerals such as calcium, zinc, potassium,
magnesium, iron and chromium may need particular attention. Visit a dietary professional
to be sure you are getting sufficient amounts. Also, medications may affect the body's effi-
ciency in absorbing these nutrients. Supplements can be used to meet your needs, but
they should never replace or take priority over a healthy diet.
Other suggestions to improve eating habits and health:
• Drink at least the recommended 6-8 cups water daily. Dehydration can be a serious
problem for older adults.
• Pay attention to your oral health. Painful gums or poor-fitting dentures can get in the
way of following a healthy diet.
• Talk with your doctor about the medications you are taking. Some may affect your ap-
petite or the way your body absorbs the nutrients from your food.
• Regular, light exercise like walking can help improve appetite.
• Avoid consuming too many sweets. The body's efficiency at absorbing sugars slows with
age, increasing the risk for obesity. More often, choose healthier, high-fiber snacks like
fresh fruit and vegetables or nuts and seeds, instead of cookies and cake.

Cost Sharing information
As a volunteer-based organization there are many costs associated
with operating our programs and providing our services. No one is
denied services because of an inability or unwillingness to make a do-nation.
It is our policy to provide everyone receiving our services with a Cost
Sharing Guideline Scale to help determine what they might pay if
they are able to contribute toward our costs.
A copy of our Cost Share Guidelines is available by calling Helping
Hands Outreach offices in Holdingford at 746-9960.
