Welcome to our June 2013 edition of Kheng Cheng Connect. Our theme for 2013
is ‘Engaged Learning’.Developing Character & CitizenryThe goal to help every student acquire the school values of Kindness, Courage, Sincerity, Diligence and a love for Singapore underlies all that we do in the school. To understand
and practise the culture of care, the students collected food and toiletries for senior citizens at the Lions Home. P6 students held an annual jumble sale and used the funds raised to show their appreciation to the school’s support staff. Part of the funds goes into buying monthly lunch for the school cleaners. All P4 students went on an internationalisation trip to Johore to have a better understanding of kampong life and to understand how different people live. After each of these activities, the students will reflect on their learning, discuss their experiences to concretize what they have understood, felt and practised using the Head, Heart and Hands framework.Achieving Educational ExcellenceOur school embarked on holistic assessment for P1 students, focussing on processes; development of skills and values as they learn English, Mathematics and Mother Tongue languages. Through this, the students work in groups, show their understanding through doing and talk about their experiences. At the mid-year’s Meet-the-Parents, the P1 students presented their portfolios of selected work to their parents. P1 and P2 parents can go to the blogs in the school’s website to see photographs of the students as they go about their work.Beyond academic studies, all students participate in a co-curricular activity or PAL lessons. The school is proud to share that our Angklung group has been invited as the only primary school to play for the opening ceremony of the Singapore Youth Festival. The basketball teams have trained through the year and had done well both at zonal and national games. Kudos goes to our Senior Girls’ Team, who through team work and an unflagging fighting spirit, managed to get into the finals and emerged as national runners-up.
The Ministry of Education has recognised Kheng Cheng’s international chess programme as a programme for school excellence, PSE. With the additional funding, Kheng Cheng can now support more students to learn critical thinking through the various chess strategies. In addition, Kheng Cheng will also share our good practices with other schools.Empowering & Motivating StaffStaff is key to the school’s culture of care. The school has embarked on using ‘The Skilful Teacher’ framework as its core professional development programme. The staff builds team spirit and a sense of belonging through activities such as learning journeys and team building activities. As part of our continual improvement efforts, a team of Science teachers will be competing at the Innergy Awards for their innovative project in the design of a fun learning trail at the zoo.Strengthening PartnershipsThe school appreciates the active support of the parents’ support group in various school programmes. A group of enthusiastic volunteers has designed their own booklets to help the lower primary students learn multiplication. The School Management Committee contributes to the school by organising Tuan Bai, to welcome the Chinese New Year and conducts Saturday Tai-Chi classes for the community.Building a Happy Learning And Working EnvironmentThe school has deployed more staff to improve road safety for the students during arrival and dismissal. We also work closely with the LTA to extend the railings to prevent jaywalking and also to improve traffic flow.Kheng Cheng School is a happy school because the students are able to enjoy the collaborative and synergistic efforts of staff, parents and community in ensuring that the students learn in a caring and safe environment.

Singapore Youth Festival (SYF)
The Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) is organised by the Ministry of Education to showcase the various talents and abilities in our students. This serves as a platform for character development – for our students to work as a team, reflect on and apply the values and competencies that will help them thrive in the future.
One of our artworks is currently on display at the on-site exhibition at Suntec City Mall, Tropics Atrium till 14 July, while the other two pieces can be viewed online at the SYF website.

Green WaveGreen Wave is an annual event which takes
place on every 22nd May. It aims to instil in our students ownership and responsibility
for nature and create a more pleasant school environment. Participating schools like ours were each given a locally imported tree to plant. The school now has a mangosteen tree added to the collection of plants in our Eco Garden.
World Book DayThe Mother Tongue Department participated in the
worldwide celebration of book reading on World Book Day held on 23 April. This day originated in Spain, when roses
and books were presented as gifts to loved ones - a tradition started 90 years ago. The department hopes to continue to increase the pupils’ interest in learning the Mother Tongue Languages through such activities and make learning fun.
