Dear Friends,

For Jewish people around the globe, this time of year is one of reflection. With the high holidays, we look backat where we have been, cast away our mistakes, and think forward about growing into the new year. We hugeach other, wish each other l’shana tova, eat together under our sukkot, and think about how we will build onthe lessons of the past to build a better tomorrow.

But then on the holiest of days, we heard the news of yet another heatbreaking incident yesterday – ashooting outside a synagogue in Germany by a white supremacist. ADL is continuing to investigate thedevastating situation as we mourn those lost and pray for those affected. You can read ADL’s account of whatwe know so far here.

Moreover, with the upcoming one year anniversary of the deadliest attack against the Jewish community, thistime of reflection is powerful.

Our reflection turns us into action. After a year of horrific attacks against marginalized people of all kinds, weare tired of grieving. With troubling numbers of anti-Semitic and bullying incidents in K-12 schools, we are tiredof our young people feeling attacked for who they are. And as Georgia remains one of five states in the nationwithout hate crimes protection for its citizens, we are tired of being unsafe.

That’s why we are hosting an Action-Oriented community program so that we can all learn what to do whenhate comes to our communities, and what we can do to respond. You can read more about it below, and weare proud to work with our partners to take action against hate together.

You’ll also notice other forms of taking Action this month—whether it be marching as a community in theAtlanta Gay Pride Parade, or bringing thousands of people together in Concert Against Hate—we are movingpeople with their feet, and turning ally-ship into a movement.

Let 5780 be the year of Action.

IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY

Georgia Tech Police Training

On October 10, ADL led a workshopfor the Georgia Association ofCampus Law EnforcementAdministrators at the Georgia TechPolice Department. Topics includedan introduction to ADL’s work;preventing, preparing for, respondingto, healing from, and educating abouthate on campus; and free speechissues on campus. This programcame about in response to the HateUncycled program ADL hosted inSeptember for campus officials froma dozen higher education institutions.We have more programmingscheduled on various campuses overthe coming months.

Atlanta Police Department

ADL hosted a showcase of theirManaging Implicit Bias for LawEnforcement for command staff ofthe Atlanta Police Department. This 4hour presentation was an example ofthe program which ADL continues topartner with APD and discussproviding for all 1,700 APD officersstarting in 2020.

A World of DifferencePrograms

ADL has facilitated multiple programsrecently including at: The HowardSchool, Woodward Academy, TheCity of Decatur, Kate's Club andDining for Women (Greenville, SC).These programs varied in topics of aStepUp! Assembly, Workplace Anti-Bias Training and Teacher Anti-BiasTraining 2.0.

Spring Hill College Trialogue

On September 12, ADL stafffacilitated an interfaith program aboutthe rise of hate crimes and how torespond both as a community and asindividuals at Spring Hill College inMobile, Alabama. 80 people ofJewish, Christian, and Muslim faithsparticipated in the workshop usingthe Pyramids of Hate and Allyship todevelop plans for how they can stophate before it escalates.

FBI Leadership SpeakerSeries

On September 20, ADL and theIslamic Speakers Bureau (ISB)collaborated on a presentation for theFBI Leadership Speakers Series.The two organizations discussed theprojects they work jointly on, how therelationship between the twoorganizations was formed and bestpractices for working through difficulttimes.

LEADERSHIP

Lunch with Elan Carr

On September 16, ADL staff andboard members participated in aninvite-only lunch with Elan Carr,Special Envoy to Monitor andCombat Anti-Semitism at the USDepartment of State. Following up onan evening program at AtlantaJewish Academy coordinated by theAtlanta Israel Coalition, this gatheringat the Jewish Federation of GreaterAtlanta was an intimate conversationthat focused on domestic andinternational issues facing the Jewishcommunity, concerns about anti-Israel bias on campus, race relations,and the relationship betweennationalism and white supremacy.

This Month in GLI

After a meaningful welcome retreat inSeptember, our GLI class will belearning about ADL’s educationalprogramming and resources. Theywill hear from former GLIparticipants, current board members,and Education Committeeleadership, and will participate inactivities from our A World ofDifference Institute. ADL is thrilled that headlining the inaugural ADL in Concert Against Hate will be New Orleans based jazz andfunk band, GALACTIC with Anjelika Jelly Joseph! On September 20th AssociateRegional Director LaVita Tuff spokeat the Center for Civic InnovationsLunch and Learn. LaVita walkedparticipants through best practicesand strategies for being an advocateand answered questions fromparticipants to help them strengthentheir current advocacy efforts.Participants ranged from those whowere new to advocacy to seasonedveterans. The lunch and learn was agreat opportunity for others to learnabout ADL and served as a reminderof the importance of advocacy fortheir organizations.
