Visual Literacy• Visual literacy is defined as the ability to

understand and use images, including the ability to think, learn, and express oneself in terms of images (Braden, 1996)

• To discuss issues and perspectives concerning visual communication (including definition of VL), the International Visual Literacy Association (IVLA) was established in New York State in 1968.

Visual Literacy Cont’d

“What you see is a major part of what you know, and visual literacy can help us to see what we see and know what we know.” … Donis A. Dondis

ACE IT with PAT• ACE is the process of creating

instructional visuals– Analyze– Create (PAT)

• Perceptions (figure-ground, hierarchy, gestalt)• Actions (contrast, repetition, alignment, proximity)• Tools (type, shape, color, depth, space)

– Evaluate

13

ACE

14

PAT under “Create”• PAT is the model used to “create” visuals.

(see slide 12)• PAT stands for Perceptions, Actions, and

Tools– Perceptions include figure-ground, hierarchy,

gestalt– Actions include contrast, repetition, alignment,

proximity– Tools include type, shape, color, depth, space

15

Perception – Figure/Ground

16

Perception - Hierarchy

17

Perception - GestaltThe whole is greater than the sum of its parts!

Gestalt 1 - Closure

Gestalt 2 - Contiguity

20

Gestalt 3 - Similarity

21

Gestalt 4 - Proximity

22

Gestalt 5 - Experience

23

Actions

24

A - Contrast

Make things different to catch your eyes

25

A - Repetition

Reusing same elements to make it look consistent

26

A - Alignment

Different types of alignments create different visual effects

27

A - Proximity

Moving things close together or far apart creates a different effect

28

ToolsTYPE (typography – different fonts)

COLOR (color does make a difference)

SPACE (separate elements)

SHAPE (line, arrow, circle, clip art…)

DEPTH (size, dimension, and texture)

29

Conclusion

The goal is to manipulate TOOLS using ACTIONS to

create effective visuals that can facilitate learner PERCEPTIONS.
