INTRODUCTION TO DESIGN

To me, Introduction to Design is a connecting bridge leading us from elementary to advanced levels – from the
wee months of foundation to the preface of degree.
Architecture is such an all-encompassing field. But more importantly, it embodies an everlasting process that
begins with abstract to progressive trains of thoughts to actual function. This subject and module is exactly the
basis of that process.
Recorded and documented in my portfolio are these processes, whether minor or major, all were vital in
realising my aspirations. And those aspirations were all part of a higher ambition: a manifestation of myself.

REFLECTION – INTRO TO DESIGN
“Architecture defined in a million processes from abstract ideas to progressive
trains of thoughts, and finally, actual function. The true foundation inlaid to
embark this exploration.“
EDUCATION
2014Pre-University Programme Foundation in Natural and Built Environments (FNBE)TAYLOR’S UNIVERSITY
2009 – 2013Secondary SchoolSMK DAMANSARA UTAMA
INSPIRATION
“I don’t need a lot of it. A spark of it can readily
generate a conceptual
direction in my brain. Pinterest,
Google, my lecturers and
friends are what I turn to.”
ACHIEVEMENTS
“The unparalleled satisfaction attained
from countless sleepless nights. Learning to love
people. Feeling happy at being my own person. All the
little things I’m proud of.”
INTERESTS
“I’d have to say, I love exploring. Or
any idea of it. Be it road trips or making my way through a
antique junk store to meeting people and
learning new experiences, what
intrigues me is that I’ll never know what
I find.”
BACK TO BASICS – This assignment breaks down sketching into its basic components, that being design elements and principles.
This individual project introduced me to observe design in its purest form.
PROJECT 1ASKETCHING
BOARD 1ClockwiseLines – Flow // Shape – Petals // Texture – Twisted // Form - Seagifts
PROJECT 1 : DESIGN ELEMENTS AND PRINCIPLES
BOARD 2ClockwiseHue – Spirits // Value – Peace // Scenery – Window // Space - Blue
BOARD 3Top to Bottom
Geometric Art – Clean Cut //Abstract Art – Lighting the Rain
PROJECT 1BDAILY ITEMS
ARTWORK – 9 simple art pieces that demonstrated clear understanding of each design principle.
Connecting concept to material to design principles was the main challenge of this assignment.
EXHIBITION DAY Left to Right
Myself, Juyi, Carol and Kayla with our 9 artworks and 2
presentation boards.
BOARD 1SpectrasonicRelating our concept, sound waves, with thread as the material used, and conveying it all through visual design principles.
BOARD 2Details
In depth explanation about each artwork and its design elements and
principles.
ARTWORKLeft to Right, Top to BottomBalance – Echoes // Repetition – Heartbeat in Love // Contrast –Dying Explosion // Balance – Echoes // Centralised – Bat Echolocation // Hierarchy – Revving a Harley // Random – Guitar Distortion // Emphasis – Water on Rock // Dynamism – Piano Runs
PROJECT 2 : TRANSFORMING 2D TO 3D
PROJECT 2A MODELS
CONSTRUCTION –Based on a word,3 stages of model-making from word transformation, colour to materials to produce one final model and presentation boards.
This project focused on exploring other aspects of a model to convey a direct message.
EXHIBITIONMy team mates and I with our 3 stages of mock-up models and final model with 2 presentation boards.
HIERARCHYTop to Bottom Row
Stage 1 – Word Transformation : expressing the word ‘Crash’ differently
// Stage 2 – Colour : communicating ‘Crash’
through different colour combinations // Stage 3 –
Materials : expressing ‘Crash’ by exploring a variety of
materials // Final model –After analysis of the best
options, presentation of the final representation model of
‘Crash’ and the 2 boards.
PROJECT 2BTOY DISPLAY
CHARACTER – The final project was about creating a display box that symbolizes and portrays our mini Lego figure.
Appling design elements and principles accompanied with a conceptual angle of the character, relating to materials and techniques as well.
THE JOKER – The Joker’s philosophy of life is the core
of my concept for the display case. Applying
scattered optical illusions and impossible objects, I
created a one-angle-view display using basic triangles
and other design values.
DETAILSAnticlockwiseBoard 1 – Connecting my concept of Joker’s philosophy to design elements to principles to main design // Board 2 and 3 –Orthographic drawings of my display unit complete with explanation
DPJ COMPILATION
DPJ – DESIGN PROCESS JOURNALBased on the mini Lego figure
(mine being Joker), we handmade 3 journals based on the following
topics:
1. Understanding the Toy2. Exploring Key Words
3. Exploring Presentation Boards
The exploration and analysis of ideas through this individual
assignment guided us to create the final model (Project 2B).
INTRODUCTION
Semester 2 of Foundation in Natural and Built Environments (FNBE) is the true, solid base to build our degree on from the ground up. Emphasis on Introduction to Design, the semester’s main architectural subject, is critical to deepen our understanding in core conceptual thinking incorporated with basic design principles.
By progressing step by step from understanding to materialising to function, we were able to grasp the fundamentals of the essence of architecture.
