    Dear Friends

Happy Spring! I think we are all eeling ready or some sun and warmth aterthis cold, snowy and long Michigan winter.

With this new season comes many opportunities to renew our commitmentand passion to creating a world ree o MS. We are doing so with newprograms, new opportunities to help people with MS in need through ourDirect Assistance program, and new ways to raise money to help us nd a cure

Our Chapter development sta came to me recently with an unusualPresidents Challenge which I wanted to share with you. This is a vibrant, enthusiastic group oproessionals who many o you know i you participate in one o our undraising events.

Their challenge to me was this: I will have to dye my hair bright orange (MS orange we callit) and maintain that MS orange hue or one entire month, provided they reach their stretch goal

    o raising $3.8 million by October 1st

in our Walk MS, Bike MS and MS Longest Day o Gol events. This dollar amount is nearly $500,000 over our mass market event goal or the year, making it atremendous challenge. It will also be a tremendous help to the MS community here in Michiganto achieve this level o undraising success.

Anyone who knows me well knows that my hair is not something I take lightly. That said, Icannot tell you how excited I will be to ollow through on my end o the deal in the all!

I invite you to join in on the un and help make this happen. Please visit us on the web atwww.nationalmssociety.org/mig to learn more and to register or one o our events this springand summer.

MS is a serious disease, and we take our jobs very seriously. We also realize that its good and

healthy to have un along the way, and that as a team, we are always more successul. We trulyare dedicated to one day creating a world ree o MS, and with your help, we will achieve it.

I hope to see many o you in the coming weeks as I embark on my MS Road Show. In themeantime, please call or email me with anything on your mind.

Progress made in repairing MS damage

    With aggressive unding rom the

    National MS Society and many

other sponsors, researchers arepursuing ways to reverse the damage done

by MS to nerve bers andthe protective myelin

    coating that surrounds

    them.

    Encouraging results

    have emerged romtwo recent laboratory

    studies.

Mayo Clinic zeroesin on an antibodyIt may not have the most

    memorable name, but

    rhigM22 recently made

    news when Dr. Moses

    Rodriguez and his Mayo

    Clinic team reported

    success in repairing

myelin when theyinjected a single dose o this monoclonal

antibody into mice with an MS-like disease.

The results were presented at the

132nd Annual Meeting o the American

    Neurological Association in October 2007.

Although these ndings will need to beconrmed by urther animal and human

studies, the results take us one step urther

to stimulate myelin repair in people with MS.

Block that LINGOResearchers unded by Biogen Idec, Inc.,

    which makes the MS disease-modiying

drug Avonex, recently reported successin repairing myelin in mice by blocking a

myelin molecule called LINGO-1. Dr. Sha Mi

and colleagues wrote about their ndings in

the September 30, 2007 online edition

    onur Mc.

    LINGO-1 is part o a complex o molecules

within myelin called the Nogo receptor

complex that has beenshown to inhibit theregeneration o nerve

    bers. In an earlier study

    published in the March,

    2004 issue onur

    nurscc, Dr. Misteam reported that

    remyelination occurred

and the health o nervebers improved when

    LINGO-1 was disabled.

    In the current study,

    the Biogen team rst

    induced EAE, an MS-like

    disease, in mice with

    and without LINGO-1.

    Both groups developed

EAE symptoms, but theywere signicantly milder in mice without the

molecule. Studies o tissue samples showed

signicant myelin repair in these mice as

    well.

The team then administered a LINGO-1

    antibody capable o blocking LINGO-1

activity to mice that already had symptoms

o EAE. The treatment stabilized diseaseprogression ater two weeks. Tissue analysisshowed that treatment reduced nerve ber

damage and enhanced myelin repair in the

spinal cord, compared with untreated mice.

According to a recent Biogen press release,

the company plans to continue researchingthis possible new approach to MS treatment

    Handling an MS attack

An exacerbation (also called anattack, a relapse, or a fare) is causedby infammation in the central

nervous system, which leads to a suddenworsening o a MS symptom or symptoms,

or the appearance o new symptoms. Anexacerbation usually lasts several days toseveral weeks.

While you may not be able to change the

act o an exacerbation, you can work on

changing how you respond to it. Here are

    some tips:

So you missed your workout, had a ight

with your spouse, and ate a giant piece ochocolate cakenone o those cus

    your exacerbation. An exacerbation

doesnt mean you did something wrong,so dont stress trying to igure out why it

    happened.

Most exacerbations resolve on their own,or your doctor may prescribe a course o

steroids i your symptoms interere with

work or lie at home. Its important to getthe rest you need and talk to your doctor

about the best way to manage whateversymptoms you are having.

    An exacerbation doesnt mean your

disease-modiying medication isntworking. In act, none o the available

    medications stops the disease

completely. Work with your doctor to

decide i your current medication needs

    to be changed.

    Pseudoexacerbationstemporary

    aggravations o MS symptomscan

happen i you get overheated, overtired,or run a ever. The symptoms will

    gradually disappear as your body

temperature returns to normal. But i

    youre worriedor the symptoms dont

get betterdont hesitate to call your

    doctor.

y no means is the idea o preparednessa new one, and although we donthave much o a historical account,

were sure our oldest oreathers, back tocaveman times, knew to take shelter, havea re going and have a stockpile o ood toeat when they saw a storm blowing towardsthem. Perhaps Shakespeare had the idea onhis mind where in Hamlet he says, I it benot to come, it will be now; i it be not now,yet it will come; preparedness is all. Mightthere have been a severe storm occurring

while he was writing the play?People with special needs havechallenges with day-to-day activities - nowadd an emergency. How do we keep themessage in mind and encourage action tobe taken beore the emergency happens? Its true that in this part o the country wedont see disaster oten, and when we do,the impact is typically short-term with littleeect on our overall well-being. This does

not mean a disaster plan is not needed.Like insurance, our hope is you will neveruse it, but in an emergency you will havesome comort that you and your amily areprepared. We all know disaster can strikewithout warning at any time. The time tosort out what needs to be done is not whilethe disaster is occurring.

Being prepared is everyonesresponsibility, particularly when there areadded needs, and is vital in every aspect

o our lie, at home, school and work. Takesome time to put a plan together, do it oneweek at a time so you do not overburdenyoursel. Remember that when a disasterhappens, you and your amily may be onyour own and spending a little time willbenet yoursel and those you care about.

It is easy to rely on the act that we live incommunities that have excellent emergencyservices. But, i the event is a power outage, widespread severe weather, or a chemicalrelease rom a nearby acility or truck, publicsaety will be overwhelmed. How long mightwe have to take care o ourselves?

Those with specialized needs must alsomake their own preparations. Talk withyour amily about what you will do in anemergency, put a amily plan together thatincludes how you will communicate with one

another i youre not in the same place, andget an emergency kit together that will helpyou get by i you are orced to stay in yourhome or a couple days.
