Relationships• RDA, BIBFRAME, and the Linked Data model brings to the

table more exploitation of relationships

o Relator codes or terms ($4 and $e in the 1XX and 7XX

fields) – Relationship between Persons, Families and

Corporate Bodies to the Resources – RDA Appendix I

o Relationship designators ($i of the 7XX fields) between

works, expressions, manifestations – and items RDA

Appendix J

o Greater employment of linking to related resources

Relator Codes and Terms• Guidance is in RDA Chapters 18-20

• Library of Congress maintains both lists, however, they only use the $e terms

• $e is repeatable; terms are recorded in WEMI order separated by a comma and always lowercase

• $e and $4 are never used in the same AAP

100;1_; $a Barber, Samuel, $d 1910-1981, $e composer, $e performer.

Codes can be accessed: http://www.loc.gov/marc/relators/

Terms are found in RDA Appendix I

Relationship Designators• Guidance in RDA Chapter 24-27

• Designators always recorded the same

o Capitalize first word; end string with a colon

o Follow MLA and include for all access points for Works and Expressions

o Because of potential differences in how library catalogs utilize the indicators and codes, record both in catalog like the examples in the MLA guide

700;12; $i Container of (work): $a Faure, Gabriel, $d 1845-1924. $t Berceuses, $m violin, piano, $n op. 16, $r D major

700;12; $i Container of (expression): $a Eccles, Henry, $d active 1694-1735. $t Sonatas, $m violin, continuo, $n book 1. $n No. 11; $o arranged

Note that arrangements are expressions of the original work

Changes in AAPs• Selections by itself is no longer allowed in Uniform Titles:

240;10; $a Selections

700;12; $a … $a Selections.

Now recorded as:

240;10; $a Works. $k Selections

Or if you can be more specific, do so,

240;10; $a Instrumental music. $k Selections

Bilingual and Polyglot• The use of Polyglot in $l is no longer used

o Each language is listed separately as an AAP

100;1_; $a Bizet, Georges, $d1838-1875, $e composer.

240;10; $a Carmen. $s Vocal score

700;12; $i Container of (expression): $a Bizet, Georges, $d

1838-1875. $t Carmen. $s Vocal score. $l English.

The 100/240 is for the original language; the 700 for the

translated expression

Future Developments• Linked Data environment will allow for data

recorded in 1XX, 6XX, 7XX, 8XX and 3XX fields to be

“linked” to authority records via identifierso Brings data into the catalog and display

• 380 $0 Record control number; $2 source code

• 381 $0 Record control number; $u Uniform Resource

Identifier; $2 Source code

• 382; $0 Authority record control number or standard

number

• 7XX $w
