Local artist to brighten up Subiaco Museum this AugustLocal artist, Kelly Canby, is set to brighten up Subiaco Museum this August with her new exhibition – The Art of Illustration.

Kelly is an award-winning local illustrator with 25 books to her name, and Subiaco Museum will be showcasing some of her colourful preliminary sketches and character models, including illustrations from Rodney, The Hole Story, Little Light and the Jaclyn Moriarty collaboration.

The museum will also host a number of Coffee with the Artist events, as well as some workshops to create pop-up books and afterschool readings with Kelly.

People are welcome to come along and watch Kelly at work on select dates as she sketches her new book from the museum.

The Art of Illustration will run at Subiaco Museum from Friday 6 August to Monday 29 November.

Changes to fees at select car stationsTo encourage people to visit and enjoy Subiaco and to help support local businesses, parking in most City-owned car stations is free on weekends and after 5pm on weekdays, with select car stations also offering the first hour free.

The City sets parking controls (e.g. time limits) and charges fees to manage demand and supply, to balance the interests of residents, ratepayers, businesses, workers and visitors.

As part of the 2021/22 budget, Council approved an increase in fees at select car stations from Monday 2 August. This is the first time the City has increased its parking fees in over four years.

The City deliberately avoided increasing parking fees during the pandemic in 2020 and subsequent recovery period, and was one of a small number of leading Australian councils that provided free parking to aid in business recovery during this time.

The increase in parking fees is necessary to continue to manage demand and supply factors, and offset increasing costs incurred by the City in managing its parking assets.

Income that the City generates from parking is reinvested back into the community in various ways, including through infrastructure upgrades.

Council MeetingsOrdinary Council Meetings are held monthly, with Agenda Briefing Forums held the week prior. Forums and meetings are streamed online via the City’s YouTube channel and are open to the public. Community planting day to celebrate National Tree Day The City is hosting a community planting event to mark National Tree Day that will see 3000 Western Australian natives planted at Lake Jualbup.

Native plants not only help save water and increase biodiversity, but also reduce the need for excess fertiliser and weed control.

The event will transform 1000sqm at Lake Jualbup (along the Evans Street verge) on Sunday 1 August. It will run from 9.30am to 11.30am.

All local residents are welcome.

Subi Coffee Series returns to get the City buzzingThe Subi Coffee Series is set to get City visitors and locals buzzing from 5 to 14 August.

With free and ticketed workshops, pop-up events and plenty of coffee specials, Subiaco is turning on the charm to keep visitors warm and caffeinated this winter with this unique 10-day series.

Almost 30 cafes and bars across the City will be brewing up coffee-centric experiences including an espresso martini masterclass, coffee body scrub workshops, Gaelic coffee nights, and a tiramisu masterclass hosted by former My Kitchen Rules stars Jordan and Anna Bruno.

The series is not only set to bring vibrancy to Subiaco but is also a great opportunity to support local, especially after the recent lockdown.

New partnership set to refresh City’s positive ageing program The City’s positive ageing program is set for a refresh, thanks to a new partnership with The Salvation Army.

The refreshed program will enable community members over 60 to stay connected and supported through an updated calendar of events which includes both new events and activities as well as old favourites.

All positive ageing program events under this partnership will be centrally located and aim to deliver value for money for City ratepayers.

The program will include Seniors Space on Wednesdays, quarterly community lunches, movie days, fortnightly coffee club, and one-off special events.

All senior community members are welcome.
