ObservingtheCryosphere

Acomprehensivecryosphereobserving systemmustbeacombinationofground-based instrumentation, satelliteremotesensing,aircraftmeasurements,modeling, anddatamanagement.

Conditions inareaswherethecryosphereexistsareharsh, andinsituobservations therearedifficult andexpensive.Satellitemonitoringovercomessomeofthelogisticalobstacles, butsatellitesarecostlyanddonotyetfullyaddresstherangeofgeophysicalvariablesneeded tounderstandthecryosphere.

Surfaceandairborneobservations providedatathatcannotbemeasuredfromspace,moredetailedinformationincriticalareas,andobservationswithwhichtovalidatesatelliteretrievals.
