Mass Intentions Message from Our Pastor
____________________________
The three Luedeking sisters went off to do the Camino de Santiago this summer. They
have been kind enough to share their experiences with us. Each was unique. We will
start with Alessandra…
In a flurry of shopping lists, last-minute errands, and fervent prayer, my two
sisters and I found ourselves at the airport one morning in June, laden with bulging
backpacks stuffed with trekking paraphernalia, curious minds, and soaring spirits.
In spite of the great fortune that had befallen us, I was still plagued by apprehension.
The most difficult days of the Camino were said to be the very first and second, with
continuous uphill climbs across the Mountains and few refreshment opportunities along
the way. I knew the physical exertion would be my greatest challenge. I did not want to
face the prospect of failure.
Forewarned, I woke up the first morning with a steely determination, and a
hydration bladder filled with 2 liters of water. True to form, the first day was the most
arduous. Factors included an interminably steep ascension, lack of nourishment, and
physical inexperience. But my first lesson came fast: the Camino provides.
Passing a small alcove shaded by large, leafy trees, a cyclist sat on a small boulder tak-
ing a rest. She saw me trudging along and offered me two energy bars, which I readily
accepted. I paused to chat with her and discovered that she was from Italy on vacation.
After feeling rejuvenated, I continued along. I quickly discovered that it was imperative
to stay attuned to the body’s needs, whether that was taking a rest to relieve aching
muscles or massaging sore feet. Too many people strained themselves to irreparable
damage; the Way of St. James is not a race, and everyone must walk at his/her own
pace.
My experience throughout the Camino was largely a spiritual one. I wanted to
grow in closer communion with God. All throughout my journey, I felt His presence in
tangible ways. I saw Him in the faces of my fellow pilgrims who emanated warmth,
kindness, and a readiness to help, unmatched in the fast-paced, self-absorbent vacuum
that constituted my life at home. I felt Him beside me as I stumbled across the rocky
terrain, never experiencing a twisted ankle despite my missteps. I heard His voice in the
profound conversations I held with a select few pilgrims who imparted their words of
comfort and wisdom. I experienced Him in the breathtaking scenery and nature, drink-
ing in the sights of snow-capped mountains, the undulating waves of golden wheat
fields, the tranquility of small forests…
After a week and a half of walking anywhere from 5-7 hours a day, my body
adjusted to the physical strain, and I learned another poignant lesson: the Camino is not
a physical journey; it’s an internal one. People of all ages and body types had embarked
on the Way. To every single pilgrim I asked, all gave me the same response: “There’s
no way one could possibly train for the Camino.” And they were right. I had not physi-
cally trained prior to leaving. My success was not fully mine. God gave me strength in
places where I was weak; and without the belief in His constant companionship, love,
and mercy, I would have been overcome within in the first few days.
A different young woman arrived to Santiago on the 37th day of walking than
the one who had started out on the first day. I had been transformed by the people en-
countered, the hardships endured, and the happiness attained. It is an everlasting jour-
ney that continues in my heart.

Vamos a
Ella me vio caminando penosamente y me
ofreció dos “barras energéticas”, que fácilmente acepté. Me detuve a charlar con ella y descubrí
que ella venia de Italia por vacaciones. Después de sentirme rejuvenecida, seguí adelante. Pronto
No me había entrenado

You want your heirs to have an estate, not a tax bill.
Consider a Charitable Lead Trust. It’s a way to pass on your Catholic
heritage by benefitting our parish while you reduce the taxes on your es-
tate. Contact the Office of Planned
Giving at (305) 762-1110 for more information.
Stewardship is planned
giving and does not leave
giving to chance. It
challenges us to plan. It asks us
to appraise
deliberately what we are
doing with our time, our
talent, and our treasure.
