• The Equality Act (The UK Parliament, 2010)
information is central to improving
health……but the provision of information alone is not sufficient in achieving positive health
outcomes…..

Health literacy definition
Health literacy is about people having the knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to find and use health information which promotes and maintains good health. By helping people to access health information and increasing their capacity to use it effectively, health literacy is critical to empowerment
(World Health Organisation, 2015)

The issue
Promoting health literacy
Batterham et al, 2016
Impact of poor health literacy
• Poorer health outcomes• Poorer health and self reported health• Wait until sicker before going to the doctor• Harder to access the right services• Harder to understand labelling and take medicine
correctly• Less able to communicate with professionals• Less likely to engage in protective healthy
behaviours• Less able to self care and self manage and care
for others
Improving and supporting health literacy can result in:
• Improved quality of health and outcomes • Better patient and professional relationships • Improved understanding of medication
information, instruction and adherence • Improved safety - reduced risk of serious health
problems resulting from misunderstanding and communication
• Reduced readmissions and repeat appointments • Reduced health inequalities
Who is at risk?
Tools and Techniques
Teach back Chunk and check Use pictures
Use simple language Routinely offer help Encourage questions
Using teach back
I would like to check that I have explained
things properly, would you mind telling me
what it is we have discussed and what we
have agreed you will do?
Can you tell me how you are going to explain
things to your family when you get home
tonight?
I want to make sure you have understood,
can you tell me what I’ve asked you to do?
Have you understood everything we have
discussed?
