Cannot really complain about the weather, it's not as hot as yours! We have had some very healthy donations, and some lovely letters, it is nice that people here in the UK not only like reading the Paws Patter, but feel part of the Shelter, through the pictures of dogs and different events, they read about in the magazine, so keep up the good work. I would like to mention some of the very kind people who have donated money since our last Paws Patter Mrs Joan Brandon donated £50.00 Mrs Sybil Pitcher £10.00 Mrs Jill James £50.00 Mrs Sandy Aspey-Evans £50.00 Pauline Knieriem £100.00 Mrs Anne Turner £2.00 a big thank you from all the dogs and volunteers at PAWS. As you may of read in the last Paws Patter, we brought Ema our Cyprus Poodle with us when we returned to the UK, Just to keep you informed on her progress, she loves the weather here, glad someone is happy, she did manage to crack a bone in her toe, not sure how, but we think chasing some bunnies, she did feel rather sorry for herself, but is ok now, we went to Thetford Forrest, and got rather lost, but Ema thought it was great fun, she loves all the Grandchildren, especially when they have food! She has settled in really well and loves everyone, except the Postman, who I am sure she would kill if given half the chance. That is all from us, love to all at Paws.

Pictured left is Shake and Bake,
so named because for several
weeks she would sit in the cor-
ner of her kennel shaking. How-
ever, after plenty of tlc she is
now a different dog and loves
nothing more than going for a
run, chasing a Frisbee and keep-
ing an eye on the helpers at the
coffee table!
Destiny (left) She
may only have
three legs but my
goodness she can
certainly run.

SHAMPOOCH in Geriskipou
DONATIONS
Mincemeat Loaf
4 eggs, beaten
6ozs/150g sugar
8ozs/200g butter
10ozs/250g Self Raising Flour
1lb/500g jar of mincemeat
Oven—Gas Mark 3½ or 160 c
Cream butter and sugar together, add the beaten eggs, a little at a time, beating
well between additions. Fold in the flour and stir in the jar of mincemeat.
Divide mixture into 2 x 1lb loaf tins which have been lined with greaseproof
paper. Cover the top of the mixture with a piece of greaseproof paper for half
cooking time. Bake for approximately an hour in the middle of the oven. Allow
to cool before turning out.
For the perfect boiled egg, put said
egg in pan, cover with water and
boil for approximately 4-5 minutes.
It is very important that you do not
fall asleep or let your mind wander
when doing this, as you will end up
with burnt eggs.

Canine Giardiasis is usually contracted by drinking con-
taminated water or eating contaminted faces. The
parasite (see picture right) adheres to the lining of the
small intestine.
The disease can range from no visible signs of distress
with many dogs self curing by expelling the parasite.
In acute cases the dog will become severely ill passing
very pungent bloody diarrhetic stools.
Metronidazole is the preferred treatment. All cases should be treated
since it is potentially transmittable to other animals and humans.
Sunday, 9th October and Sunday, 13th November.
The Yard Sale to be held on 13th November will be a
Christmas-style sale
BBQ food (by Eddie) and refreshments will be avail-
able. Sellers to be at the PAWS Dog Shelter by 8.00
a.m. buyers 9.00 a.m.
Shampooch for donating two large water
bowls. The bowls fit nicely into used tyres
so that they cannot be tipped (or carried
away !) by some of the more boisterous
dogs at the kennels.
One of our oldest residents—Mutt—is
given an extra special treat by Kennel
Helper Kelly. We have a number of resi-
dents that have been at the Shelter for
over 10 years—proving that the Shelter is
not in the slightest way ageist!!. Mutt is
approximately 14 years old. At his age, of
course, he deserves extra special privi-
leges, like a bedroom of his own! He also
gets taken for walks every day. Hmm, not
a bad place to retire, I reckon.
Wow look how the trees have grown at the Shelter. Compare it to the picture
on the inside back page and you will see just how much. Believe me, there are
some 150 dogs in there somewhere!! The trees do look lovely but they are in-
valuable in providing shade for our residents (and helpers!!)
I may be pregnant but I can still sit up and beg for my food. Now which is
my best side for posing.

Pictured left is Fifi with her new
Mum and Dad. Fifi was re-
homed to Germany and when
her new family came over to
Cyprus for a visit they naturally
came with Fifi. Fifi travelled in
style in the cabin. Now that is
what is called making use of
one‟s Pet Passport. Mind you it
is all right for a smaller dog to sit
on your lap during the flight but
not too sure about one or two
of our bigger dogs !

thank you to the 70 supporters who attended the event and raised €673. The

David and Barbara Irwin organised the very enjoyable evening.
The next quiz will be at the same venue on Monday, 17th October 2011.

During the Easter weekend at the end of April, while the PAWS Charity Shop was closed to
the public for a period of 5 days, Jean Howard, the shop manageress, her husband, Eric and a
trusted band of volunteers were hard at work. The challenge was to clear the shop and stock
room, to re-decorate both areas and then to re-attach shelving to walls and to re-stock dis-
plays ready for opening for the next business day.
It was a tight schedule and, as with any DIY project, there were a few unforeseen hurdles to
overcome, but in the end the mission was accomplished successfully within the allotted time-
scale. Special mention and thanks goes to Carole Halkett who was first to arrive and last to
leave each day. Jean and Eric, are very grateful to her and also to the following individuals for
their time and effort: Karen and Keith Knight, Carol Holt, Christine and Bryn Jones, Janette,
Kay, Tina, Barbara, Maria and Peter. Come and see the results of our labours for yourself
and browse through our ever changing seasonal stock of ladies, gents and children‟s clothing,
shoes and bags. Amongst our „best sellers‟ are
books, bric-a-brac, electrical items, soft furnish-
ings and toys. Most unlikely items which we have
sold here include ski suits, water and snow skis
also a Nebuliser which we passed on to the Hos-
pice via one of our volunteers who is a nurse.
You never know what unusual objects you will
find here in the PAWS CHARITY SHOP.
Now, calling all you MEN out there! In the shop
we have a large range of clothing for women but
not so many for gents. So, please throw open
your wardrobe doors and take a good look inside,
then consider which items you would like to do-
nate to our charity.

Jean (our Shop Manageress) and her husband Eric tell us about their new addition to the family.
This is Billy, he is now 14/15 months old and we acquired him as a young pup of around eight weeks before he entered the kennels (he got as far as the car park). I had already seen him as one of my regular cus-tomers at the shop in Chlorakas would take h i m e v e r y -
where with him for a week or so trying his best to find a home for him - I resisted until I saw them at the car park. Billy had been left in a house in Emba for 2/3 days at a time with a rottweiler, can you imagine, if John and Theresa had not intervened with this family he could have been breakfast for the rottweiler, which was also taken into PAWS and re-homed. We also have two cats, Blackie the female and a loner of a cat still does not entertain Billy but Thomas is his best pal. They chase each other in and around the house and Thomas now grooms Billy, which he adores and will nudge Thomas if he misses a bit.
It may be early to remind everyone, but membership fees for 2012 will be due
on the 1st January 2012. Membership forms will be available from the Shelter
and at our Shop in Chloraka towards the middle of December. The fees will be
the same as the previous couple of years i.e. Single €10; Joint €20;
Corporate €85; Life (Single) €170; Life (Joint) €340.

PAWS PATTER
Finished with your PAWS Patter then why not return it
to the Kennels or the Shop for recycling. Let’s do our
bit to save the environment and at the same time cutting
down our costs.
All residents of the Shelter have their pic-
ture taken and then it is displayed, with
their name, outside the appropriate Com-
pound. They also have a record form de-
tailing their personal details as well as their
medical record of when they entered the
shelter and from where, the date of their
vaccinations, worming and micro-chipping
etc. To the right are some of the latest
residents keen to have their picture taken.
Pictured below is one new resident who
believes he should be on the Welcoming
Committee in the Office.
