On August 23, 1978, seventeen days after the death of Pope Paul VI, the VaticanAdministration released a series of three stamps to announce the Sede Vacante
(Vacant See), also known as the "Interregnum issue".A common design was utilized for the bicolored trio, consisting of a stylized umbrella
over crossed keys with a grillwork background nearly covering the entire stamp. Theinscription "SEDE VACANTE MCMLXXVII" appears above the design and "POSTE
TICANE" and the value below. The lettering and outlines of the emblem and grillworkare printed in lilac on all values. The emblem and background color varies in each stamp:
sky blue, 150L pink and 250L light yellow.The stamps, designed by Italian painter Emidio Vangelli, are vertical in format and.
measure 25 rom x 40 rnrn with a 14:x 13 1/4 perforation. A total of 1,300,000 completewere printed in rotary photog ravuze on white glossy paper by the State Polygraphic
Rome-Italy and distributed in sheets of fifty.

On August 22, 1978, the n announced theminting of a 500 Lire ($.59) Sede Vacante s l' coin de-picting a dove, on one s ide, symbolizing Holy Spirit,through whose guidance the Princes of Church choose anew pope. The obverse s coat arms of CardinalJean'Villot. The coin will be placed on on September 26,1978, for 5000 Lire ($5.95).

On May 22, 1978, the Vatican Posts has released a series of six (6) 130 Lire post card~(14.8 x 10.5 em. ) contained within a folder (15 x 11 em.). Each card illustrates theoriginal drawings prepared by Lino Bianchi Ba r rf vie.ra for the ":rrountains and Views ofVatican City" stamp issue of November 23, 1976 (Sc, No. 601 ...06).
The cards and jacket design are identical in format and similar in design to thefirst series of twelve (12) pol;lt cards (l20L and l30L) issued on March 21, 1977. Theillustration on each card is printed in charcoal grey, but on a different color background.The colors used for each card are nearly idep,tical as to the stamP counteJ:'part.
The printing on the correspondence side is in black, while the pre .•printed postagestamp (25 x 30 mm •.. including perforation) a1\d the papal insignia and letteJ:'ing on thejacket is dark brown. A total of 100,000 complete sets were pJ:'inted by J3ertoncel1oArtigrafiche, Cittadella (Padua), Italy.
