EMS and EMS WR

Basic Description

3

What is EMS?

• Environmental Monitoring System

• A database for information on environmental observations and measurements– Monitoring Locations - 24,096– Samples - 768,030– Analytical Results - 4,067,777

4

What’s in EMS?

• Environmental monitoring data:– Ambient air, water, sediment, biological samples– Effluent discharge, air emission, solid wastes– Drinking water (potential)

• Analytical results include:– Physical / chemical– Bacteriological– Taxonomy– Quality assurance

5

What is an EMS monitoring location?

• An EMS monitoring location must be identified before data can be entered & permanently stored

• Each EMS monitoring location has a unique ID

• Each location is geo-referenced

• Examples:– Stream or lake sampling location– Drinking water intake or distribution point– Water well– Effluent discharge pipe

7

Current EMS data access

• Direct access to EMS limited to Ministry staff (requires userid and password)

• Requests from permittees & general public routed through EMS Helpdesk

• Public requests are subject to a processing fee

• No web access

8

What is EMS WR?

• EMS Web Reporting

• Provides access to EMS data over the web– logon page is at:http://srmapps.gov.bc.ca/apps/ems/emsLogin.do

• Powerful and user-friendly “front end” to EMS database

• Users can view data online, download data retrievals, or download “canned” reports

9

Differences between EMS and EMS WR

11

Future enhancements to EMS and EMS WR

• Internet mapping tools to display EMS locations spatially & link to EMS WR– e.g., water wells, PODs, aquifers, community

watersheds

• Cross-referencing EMS with other databases

12

More about EMS

In depth

13

Benefits of EMS to HAs & purveyors

• Centralized provincial data repository

• Professionally maintained & updated

• Secure against unauthorized access

• Routine backups

• Electronic format for easy access & retrieval

• QA/QC function assured

• Flexible reporting format & content

• Opportunity to access additional spatial information (e.g.,

water wells, aquifers, POD’s, community watersheds)

• Does not interfere with reporting relationships between

health authority & purveyor

Getting data into EMS

• Set up a monitoring location– This will generate an EMS ID#

• Establish agreement with the analysing lab to upload test results to EMS

• Complete & submit necessary lab requisition & mandatory information

17

How to establish EMS site ID for a site

Submit a request through one of the following:

• Nearest WLAP Regional office– Contact: TBD

• Water Protection Section, WLAP– Contact: TBD

• Water Air Monitoring & Reporting, WLAP– Contact: TBD

18

Mandatory information to establish EMS site

• Information required to establish an EMS monitoring location:

– Name of water source (e.g., Township of Langley Well No. 1)

– Type of water source (e.g., well, stream)– Specific location (lat/long, UTM & source)– Description of monitoring location (e.g., at the intake)– Purpose of monitoring (e.g., trend)

19

More about EMS WR

In depth

20

Who will use EMS WR?

• Internal usersSRM and WLAP staff

• External usersInitial:

Health Authorities & water purveyorsPotential:

Other ministries / organizationsGeneral public

21

Benefits of EMS WR web access

• Wider access to data – outside government offices

• Cost-effective and timely access

• Accessible through web browser – no special software needed

• Simple interface, customized for frequent data requirements & access according to user needs

22

EMS WR Security

• Passwords, user IDs

• How to get a password and user ID– Contact EMS Help Desk

• Phone: (250) 356-1924• Email: emshelp@gems5.gov.bc.ca

• Read-only access levels:– Full (Provincial staff, health authorities)– Limited (all others)

Basic interface – hints

• Use EMS WR navigation buttons– Browser navigation buttons are not part of EMS WR

• Menu bar

– Logging out– Help– Link to Government of British Columbia web pages

• Browser status bar

29

EMS WR - Entering information

• ENTER key

• Date & time formats

• Mandatory fields

• Drop-down lists

• Multi-selection lists of values

Avoid using the Enter key after typing information into fields. Carry out actions by clicking an EMS WR button (e.g. search).

30

EMS WR – Logging out

• To log out of the system, click Log Off on the EMS WR menu bar

• Automatic timeout (log off) after 60 minutes if no user input; user will have to logon again.

31

Data retrievals

32

Data retrievals vs predefined reports

• Data retrievals– Suitable for routine and specialized data requirements– Require Excel or Access skills to create customized

graphs/reports– Highly flexible– Downloaded in Comma-Separated Value (CSV)

format • Predefined reports

– Designed for routine data requirements – Simple to create– Little flexibility– Downloaded in Portable Document Format (PDF)

Creating graphs

• Trend graph– Shows how selected sample parameter results (e.g.

nitrate-nitrogen) have changed over time.

• Exceedance graph– Shows how sample parameter results for a particular

sample compare to the Canadian Drinking Water Guideline.

43

Trend graph

• The Trend Graph allows you to see how the level of a single parameter has changed over time at a single monitoring location. You can choose to graph all historical samples in EMS for a parameter, or you can specify the time period you want to graph.

• EMSWR automatically inserts the Canadian Drinking Water Guideline (CDWG) limit for the selected parameter into the graph as a red horizontal line. This enables you to quickly assess the parameter’s trend over time and against the CDWG limit.

44

Trend graph example

• The EMS WR trend graph is currently disabled, but is expected to look like this:

time

conc

entra

tion CDWG limit

Parameter, e.g. turbidity• Plots time series

• Include CDWG

• Ability to plot linear or log Y-axis

• Visual inspection only

• Download raw parameter results for analysis

45

Exceedance graph

• An exceedance graph enables you to determine, at a glance, whether the results of a water sample from a single monitoring location complies with the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines (CDWG).

46

Creating an exceedance graph

47

Viewing an exceedance graph

• Compares results to Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.

48

Example of an exceedance

• This exceedance graph show sodium & lead totals for a sample, and compare them to CDWG limits

49

More on exceedance graphs

• The exceedance graph for pH is slightly different from the graphs of other parameter results. Rather than having a CDWG limit, it displays an acceptable pH range (i.e. 6.5 to 8.5 pH units)
