What are the ingredients for great learning experiences?

Criteria for Awesomeness (by Keenan & Baz) 1. Learning is interactive (hands-on learning, being active

in the classroom, no sitting and listening for long periods of time)

2. Working towards an end product (create something new - that you’re proud of - by the end of the project)

3. No textbooks (information found by students through independent or guided research using Internet, listening to guest speakers, going on excursions, conducting experiments, and reading actual books)

Criteria for Awesomeness (by Keenan & Baz) 4. Learning has a purpose (e.g. making something for an

audience, making a difference, significant to your own life or passions, not just to do a test etx)

5. Flexible, comfortable learning spaces (no front of the room, no desks, a range of furnishing students can select to use)

6. Conversation is encouraged (working with peers of your choice, and no ‘shushing’ by teacher)

7. Engaging delivery of content by teachers (no PPTs, or boring lectures by teachers at the front of the class)

Criteria for Awesomeness (by Keenan & Baz) 8. Variety of learning activities (teacher-led activities

are varied, and not just ‘listen then write’) 9. More freedom (students given opportunity to pursue their

interests and passions - e.g. EdVenture Time at MEPS) 10. Assessment as a conversation and celebration (portfolio

or presentation of learning at intervals throughout project to share learning with teacher)

11. Be inspiring and fun (project is something we want to continue working on in our free time)

required to make some form of public product for an authentic audience. This adds a sense of

purpose and authenticity, which is vital to PBL.

SHAREThere is often also a public display of their works

in some form of exhibition or a visit from their audience, who may also be an expert in their

field or an important local figure. This authenticity drives a sense of importance to the project for students and increases engagement. It also

provides students with a real world purpose for the work they are doing and an opportunity to take their learning outside of the walls of their

classroom.
