Royal Gifts

It is related apropo of roy-

al gifts that the czar once pre-

sented¬

a herd of deer to anobleman who had no deerpark that the king of Saxonygave a lady a pair of youngboars and that Emperor Wil¬

Ham astonished a by no meanswealthy Hanoverian familywith a giftof eight Hungarianhorses Yet these wonderfulpresents were less embar-rassing

¬

to their recipientsthan the five elephants whichthe late Shah of Persia sentto a British consul who de-

sired to approach him in hisofficial capacity

The unhappy man knew notwhat to dpwith these expen ¬

sive animals until on its be¬

ing hinted to him that a re ¬

turn present was expectedhe hit upon the expedient Of

buying one more elephantadding it to the number ardoffering the lot to the poten ¬

tate The Shah graciouslyaccepted the truly regal gutand the consul got out of hisdifficulty at a cost to himselfof rather over 11 hundred d<
