12.2 Persistence and degradability
• Pure bacterial cultures isolated from lake and soil samples in NJ were shown to degrade 1, 3-butadiene to 1, 2-epoxybutene (1, 2). 1, 3-Butadiene was listed in a group of chemicals which should be biodegraded by biological sewage treatment as long as suitable acclimatization is achieved (3). The biodegradation half-life in aerobic waters has been reported as 7 days and the half-life in anaerobic waters was reported as 28 days (4).
• Screening testsof distillates (petroleum), solvent refined heavy paraffinic based on OECD guidelines 301 B and 301F of this product indicated that this product is not readily biodegradable: 31 % degradation of test substance (solvent neutral 600 base oil) after 28 d (O2 consumption).Biodegradation for this complex hydrocarbon UVCB-substance is based on the test results of different petroleum products and modelling of hydrocarbon blocks using PETRORISK model (CONCAWE).
12.3 Bioaccumulative potential
• In a study conducted according to OECD Guideline 305 C (Bioaccumulation: Test for the Degree of Bioconcentration in Fish), fish were exposed to test substance concentrations of 0.03 and 0.3 mg/L at 25°C for 56d under flow through conditions. BCF values of 12 -113 (0.03 mg/L) and 15 -140 (0.3 mg/L) were determined. Furthermore, results of a calculated bioconcentration factor BCF is available. The generally accepted calculation model yielded a BCF=95.41. These results indicate a low potential for bioaccumulation of alpha-methyl styrene in fish.
• As distillates (petroleum), solvent refined heavy paraffinicv is a hydrocarbon UVCB, testing of BCF-factor and partition-coefficient is not technically feasible. Therefore, bioaccumulation is evaluated based on the hydrocarbon blocks of different petroleum products using PETRORISK model (CONCAWE). In accordance with the results of

CONCAWE modeling, potential of bioaccumulation or adsorption to soil cannot be neglected.
12.4 Mobility in soil
The Koc of alpha-methyl styrene is estimated at 1,900(SRC), using a log Kow of 3.48(1) and a regression-derived equation
(2). According to a classification scheme (3), this estimated Koc value suggests that alpha-methyl styrene is expected to
have low mobility in soil (SRC).
