Decentralized Sanitation

Centralized Sanitation Systems

Advantages Limitations

• Convenient for households: fecal sludge

is almost immediately removed from

their property and is no longer theirs to

manage.

• Easy to control and test: all fecal sludge

is centralized.

• Resource intensive: a large amount of

water is needed year-round

• High technical skills required

• High capital cost

• High operation and maintenance costs

is centralized. • High operation and maintenance costs

• If not functioning correctly, can cause

significant environmental contamination

and public health risks

Current Challenges in the System

7

• Open-defecation

• Varying design and quality of septic tanks do not comply with designs prescribed by BIS

• Effluent goes directly into open drains or soak pits – Contamination

8

Emptying and Transport

9

• Manual emptying

• Difficult to purchase or maintain equipment

• No training, little hygiene, and workers learn on the spot

Treatment

10

• No treatment – Disposal on fields or surface water leads to

contamination, which results in public health impacts

Each situation is unique

What is it?

Sanitation Capacity Building Platform

What:

The Sanitation Capacity Building Platform (SCBP) is a new initiative

by Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD). The purpose of the

platform is to support and build the capacity of the cities to plan

and implement decentralized sanitation. Decentralized sanitation is

a key solution to accomplish the Swachh Bharat Mission, AMRUT

and the Smart City schemes.

28

Assess city
