Dear Parents and Carers
KINDERGARTEN 2020 SCHOOL TOUR
Next Monday 5th August the next Kindergarten 2020 School Tour will take place for parents of children who will start school in 2020. The tour will start in the assembly hall at 9am.
BEST WISHES JOSHUA
Year Five student, Joshua, is this week competing in the National Swimming Championships in Melbourne. We wish Joshua the very best of luck.
NAIDOC WEEK (National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee)
As NAIDOC Week officially occurred in the holidays, Kent Road PS will hold its own celebration next week. On Tuesday and Wednesday all students will undertake activities to build their knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture, language and achievements.
Kindergarten and Year One lessons will be presented by their teachers. Students in Years Two-Five will be taught by Year Six students who have worked very hard, in groups, to research their topic and prepare a lesson.
Students teaching students is a very effective means for our senior classes to demonstrate their understanding of the content as well as allowing each Year Six student the opportunity to develop their leadership skills.
K-6 WALKATHON
Next Thursday, 8th August, we will hold our major fundraiser for 2019, our school walkathon. At 11.45am, students will cross over Kent Road to ELS Hall Oval where they will walk as many laps of the walkathon course as they can within the time limit. Students will eat lunch at ELS. Canteen orders will be delivered to the oval. Students will return to school at 2.45pm
We ask parents and family members to sponsor children per lap, or to make a donation to recognise the students’ efforts.
There are lots and lots of great prizes which will be awarded to the highest fundraiser in each class and the family which raises the most funds. And the class which collectively raises the most funds will win a free excursion!
STAFF NEWS

KINDERGARTEN 2020 and SCHOOL BOUNDARY CHANGES With the new primary school in Smalls Road opening next year, there have been a number of boundary changes for all local schools which may result in some families no longer being classified as in area for Kent Road.
For families who already have a child attending Kent Road there will be no change, that is, no child will be required to move to a new school if they are already enrolled.
In order to assist the school with planning for 2020, I strongly urge parents with children starting Kindergarten next year to submit an application form as soon as possible.
Enrolment forms are available at the front office, or from our website.
SCOPE IT K-2
Students in Kindergarten, Year One and Year Two enjoyed their first Scope It lesson last week and, as these photos show, they clearly enjoyed their lesson.
The school will cover the cost of the first two weeks of lessons for each student in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year Two.
The invoice for the remainder of the term’s lessons was sent home last week and is available on our school website.

As part of the Makers Empire Project, Year Two designed personal totems that related to the Geography unit, “Connection
to Place.” The animals they chose had similar traits to themselves. The students experimented with 3D shapes in the
Makers Empire program and then designed their totem on grid paper. They made their animal face on cardboard, designed
and attached repeated patterns onto cylinders, using an Aboriginal influence to create their totem. They also created an
animal that can be printed on the 3D printer.

Always Wear a Helmet!
Research shows that helmets reduce head injuries by up to 74 per cent in crashes with motor vehi-cles. Wearing a helmet from the moment they start learning to ride will help your child to develop it as a habit and reduce the risk of head injuries.
Early helmet wearers will also be more likely to continue to wear helmets throughout their life.
Your child must wear a helmet when riding a bike in a public place. It is the law. It is important that the helmet is correctly fitted and complies with the Australian and New Zealand Standards. A helmet that is not correctly fitted and fastened does not provide enough protection in a crash.
Choosing and using a helmet Always choose an approved helmet with a standards approved sticker.
Pick a helmet with a bright colour so it can easily be seen. Choose the right size so it doesn’t cover your eyes or ears.
Look for a light weight helmet with adjustable straps and fitting system.
Avoid attaching anything to the helmet.
Never wear a damaged helmet. The Centre for Road Safety website has detailed information on selecting and fitting helmets.
At school, your child will learn about road safety as part of Personal Development, Health and Physical Education. Help them learn safety on wheels messages by using and sharing them whenever you are rid-ing together.
Students in Early Stage 1 to Stage 2 Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate
Ride your bike away from the road Students in Stage 3 Always wear a helmet when you ride or skate
Ride your bike away from busy roads
