Whether yoursquorehiking through back-country or headed toan established camp-site this checklist willhelp you prepare foryour expedition
1 NavigationApproximately 9 million campers back-
pack to outdoor destinations making navi-gation a top safety necessity Remember thatcamping often means leaving behind cellcoverage Internet access or a GPS signalmaking such low-tech gear as a compass andmap mandatory Other potential toolsinclude a topographic map combined withan altimeter to help gauge your journeyrsquosterrain and altitude
2 InsulationKnowing climate and weather conditions
is vital According to Backpackercomclothing is just as important as a tent orsleeping bag to stay insulated Outerwearshould repel rain and snow but also breatheso you donrsquot get wet from perspiration Yourbase layer should be made of moisture-wicking fabric -- not cotton --- to preventchafing Consider that day and night temper-atures can differ greatly so layer clothingand choose materials and thicknesses appro-priate for your destination -- and donrsquot forgeta hat and extra socks
Bring along T-Rex Clear Repair Tape tomend holes or tears in tents or clothing It
sticks to both wet and dry surfaces ensuringan easy and instant fix to keep gear insulatedin any weather condition
3 IlluminationCampers should always bring enough
illumination to be able to safely see andmove after sundown especially in case youget delayed lost or separated from thegroup While flashlights are obvious choic-es headlamps are popular as they allow forhands-free operation and are typically smalland lightweight Another feature to consideris a strobe lighting mode for emergencysituations
Extra batteries are essential as batterylighting was the most popular purchaseamong adult campers in 2014 according tothe Outdoor Foundation Available in sin-gle-use or rechargeable models ideally thebatteries should offer a balance of longduration high performance and environ-mental friendliness
4 EmergencyFirst Aid KitAccidents happen to even the most
experienced and best prepared campersYour kit can prove invaluable if you oranother member of your group are in afirst-aid situation need gear repaired or areunder other tense conditions
SectionHikercom proposes suppliessuch as a pre-assembled first-aid kit amulti-tool knife scissors screwdriver andsafety pins You can then add other itemsbased on preference and experience Auseful addition is a high-quality tape likeT-Rex Tape as it can be used to repairhiking poles patch sleeping bags make arope temporarily stabilize an injury orbroken boot and more T-Rex Clear RepairTape can even be used to fix cracked GPSor phone screens and flashlights
5 Hydration and NutritionFood is an enjoyable part of camping
but deciding what to bring will depend onwhether yoursquore backpacking miles to yoursite or camping near your car as well as howmany days yoursquoll be gone If yoursquore trekkingfar be prepared with lightweight and nour-ishing options
Water is essential but heavy so checkthe area for potential natural sourcesldquoMountaineeringrdquo suggests carrying a col-lapsible water reservoir and purificationtablets to ensure water safety Freeze-driedmeals are popular selections however no-cook meals with long shelf lives are betterin arid regions Other possibilities includeenergy bars nuts dried fruits or jerky Neverleave out animal-attracting leftovers as thatcould attract unwanted intruders
ldquoEssentialsrdquo are called so for a reasonDonrsquot be caught camping without propersupplies With these necessities it will beeasy to prepare for and enjoy your nextadventure in the great outdoors

9 Tips To Keep Your Child Safe Around Water This Summer
The REPORTERFew things are as much fun as splashing around at the
beach or in a backyard pool but not every child is confi-dent about taking the plunge
ldquoFor some children the idea of getting in the water and trying to swim can be a bit frighteningrdquo says KJ Hales author of Itrsquos Hard to Swim the second and most recent addition to the Lifersquos Little Lessons by Ellie the Wiener-dog educational picture book series (wwwellietheweiner-dogcom)
ldquoBut with the proper positive reinforcement they can overcome their fears and discover just how much fun swimming can berdquo
May is National Water Safety Month a good time for parents to consider teaching their children how to swim The American Academy of Pediatrics supports swimming lessons for most children 4 years and older Water safety classes can also reduce the risk of drowning in younger children the pediatrics group reports but advises that because children develop at different rates not all will be ready to swim at the same age
Hales who offers teachersrsquo guides and educational activities to go along with the lessons in her books says she chose swimming as one of Ellie the Wienerdogrsquos adventures because itrsquos a valuable skill that all children should learn
ldquoMost children are around water in some form wheth-er itrsquos a pool a river a pond a lake or the oceanrdquo she says ldquoSo learning to swim isnrsquot just for fun Itrsquos also important for safetyrdquo
The Pediatric Academy cites several water-safety tips for parents including
bull Never ndash even for a moment ndash leave small children alone or in the care of another young child while in bathtubs pools spas or wading pools or near irrigation ditches or standing water
bull Empty water from buckets and other contain-ers immediately after use
bull To prevent drowning in toilets young children should not be left alone in the bathroom
bull Closely supervise chil-dren in and around water With infants toddlers and weak swimmers an adult should be within an armrsquos length With older children and better swimmers an adult should be focused on the child and not distracted by other activities Bath seats cannot substitute for adult supervision
bull If children are in out-of-home child care ask about exposure to water and the ratio of adults to children
bull If you have a pool install a four-sided fence that is at least 4-feet high to limit access to the pool The fence should be hard to climb (not chain-link) and have a self-latching self-closing gate Families may consider pool alarms and rigid pool covers as additional layers of protec-tion but neither can take the place of a fence
bull Parents caregivers and pool owners should learn CPR
bull Do not use air-filled swimming aids (such as in-flatable arm bands) in place of life jackets They can deflate and are not designed to keep swimmers safe
bull All children should wear a life jacket when riding in a boat Small children and non-swimmers should also wear one at waterrsquos edge such as on a river bank or pier
ldquoWhen Ellie finally swims she realizes that learning something new is wonderful and if you give it a try you can do anything you wishrdquo Hales says ldquoThis is a lesson I hope all children will take to heart not only when learning to swim but also when facing any challenge that comes their wayrdquo
KJ Hales (wwwkjhales-au-thorcom) is author of the edu-cational childrenrsquos books series Lifersquos Little Lessons by Ellie the Wienerdog (wwwellietheweiner-dogcom) The latest book in the series is Itrsquos Hard to Swim The purple wiener dog character is based on Halesrsquo own dachshund by the name of you guessed it Ellie

(StatePoint) Morethan 30 million Amer-icans camp in tentsyearly according tothe Outdoor Founda-tion As with anyoutdoor adventurehaving the necessaryequipment is crucial
