WHAT IS SIX STROKE ENGINE ??The SIX STROKE engine is a type of internal combustion

engine based on the four stroke engine, but with additional complexity intended to make it more efficient & reduce emissions.

There are two power strokes: one with fuel, the other with steam or water.

ACTUAL PROTOTYPE OF SIX STROKE ENGINE

CROWER SIX STROKE ENGINEThe CROWER six-stroke engine is claimed high-efficiency

variant of an internal combustion engine (I.C engine) under development by Bruce Crower.

Two extra strokes are added to the customary internal combustion engine, which makes a six stroke engine. A third down-stroke engine is a “steam stroke” & a third up-stroke exhausts the expanded steam while venting heat from the engine.

WORKING PRINCIPES

The working principle of six stroke engine is based on the concept of four stroke engine but with some modification, another two strokes are added.

SUNCTION STROKEThe piston moves from top dead centre toBottom dead centre & creates vacuum pressure. So the air & fuel mixture is sucked into the cylinder.

COMPRESSION STROKEThe piston moves from bottom dead centre to top dead centre & compresses the mixture. The mixture is compressed to high temperature & pressure.

POWER STROKEAt the end of compression stroke the fuel is injected & burnt. The pressure inside the cylinder increases rapidly & it pushes thepiston down & power is transmitted from piston to wheel.

EXHAUST STROKE:The Burnt product is pushed

through the exhaust valve by the upward movement of the piston.

SECONDARY POWER STROKE:At the end of the exhaust

stroke the cylinder temperature becomes around 900-10000 C. At this stage water is injected by an Injector in the form of fine droplets. The water turns in to vapour increasing volume around 1600 times when it comes in contact with the superheated cylinder.

The water turns into vapour increasing volume around 1600 times when it comes in contact with the superheatedcylinder.

SECONDARY EXHAUST STROKE:In this stroke the water vapour is exhausted by the upward motion of the piston.

THERMODYNAMIC ANALYSIS & COMPARISION WITH 4-STROKE ENGINE

In order to determine the engine parameters, in 2011 HONDA motors conducted the first simulation of the six stroke engine by using a modified Honda GC190 engine.

SIMULATION RESULTS POWER AND TORQUE V/S ENGINE SPEED

FUEL FLOW RATE:The amount of fuel flow to the engine per unit time is known as fuel flow rate.

As the diagram shows the fuel flow rate of 6-stroke engine is 50% lesser than the conventional 4-stroke engine.

ADVANTAGESThere is 40% reduction in fuel consumption.

Extracts work from heat that is ordinarily lost through the

cooling system of a conventional engine.

Reduces exhaust emissions per a given power range.

Steam stroke cools the engine internally hence the use of much

higher compression ratios.

The weight & power loss of conventional cooling system parts

can be eliminated.

LIMITATIONS & OBSTACLESInjecting relatively cold water onto a hot metal piston can

damage it over time from thermal expansion & contraction.

Separate water tank would have significant weight & space

penalties.

A steam-free cool down reduces the temperature inside the

combustion chamber.

Cold climate anti-freezing measures would be needed in the

water reservoir.

BETTERMENT

To prevent the damages due to the action of cold water, we can

utilize the exhaust gases for pre-heating of water.

We can use a condenser instead of a separate water tank which

will reuse the distilled water for a period of cycles.

To compensate the temperature drop inside the chamber we

can further increase the compression ratio which increases the

power output making it suitable for high power requirements.

CONCLUSIONS

The concept of Six-Stroke Engine seems to be rather eco-

friendly & low fuel consuming which can fulfil the needs of

near future.

A lot of experiments are being conducted in order to improve

the efficiency & workability of the engine.
