Administering the colony from Spain

1. The Governor had no power to make laws. Only the Crown could do so.

2. Colonial officials merely carried them out.

3. However, they could suspend the law and notify the king later.

• RESIDENCIA – Investigation done regarding the conduct of the outgoing general.

• VISTA – The visitador was a special envoy of the king to the colonies to investigate conditions and reports his observations to the king. Has the power to punish officials.

PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT• The provinces were called ALCADIAS

and were each governed by ALCALDE MAYOR. • The political-military district is called

CORREGIMIENTOS and governed by CORREGIDOR (places resistant to Spanish Rule)
