STANDARDS BASED GRADINGWMS Unit Sampler • 2013

START OF UNIT: LEARNING TARGETS

Students receive these the first day of our unit.

We often have an activity to “hook” students into the unit or preview the standards.

THROUGHOUT UNIT: ACTIVITIES

THROUGHOUT UNIT: FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS Focus on Assessment for LEARNING with

an emphasis on FEEDBACK and opportunities for IMPROVEMENT DIGI (“Did I Get It?”/pop quiz) Homework

Formative assessment=practice 10% of a student’s grade in our Science 8 class Score earned shown during unit At the end of the unit, “yes” (100%) or “no” (0%)

What does this formative assessment communicate to: You as a teacher? Students? Parents?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: DIGIMS5: Separating MixturesBeach cleanup is a messy process that

can involve separating lots of junk while trying to preserve the ecosystem.

1. How would you separate a mixture of salt water, sand and iron nails?

2. Extension: What characteristic properties did you use to perform this separation?

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT: HOMEWORK

THE IMPORTANCE OF FEEDBACK Who gives feedback on formative

assignments and assessments? Teacher Peers Self (the student)

Consider: How to help students track formative progress How to help students reflect on next steps

What do I understand? What do I need to review? What might I need more extensive help or tutoring

with before the unit exam?

REVIEW ASSIGNMENT

SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Always individual Always scored by the teacher Provides information about where

each student is at on each learning target at the conclusion of the unit of study

90% of a student’s grade in Science 8

Although it is at the end of the unit, opportunities for redoing the assessment are available

SUMMATIVE WRITTEN ASSESSMENT

SUMMATIVE PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT

A WORD ABOUT PROJECTS

Summative Should be individual Should be scored by the teacher A clear rubric should be provided in

advance Consider what in-class supports will

be available, especially for high-risk students

Consider what redo opportunities will be available

REDOS

Only for learning targets not passed (js/wws/smi)

Student must show that she/he has reflected on the exam, practiced the learning target, and now understands it

Student then must demonstrate understanding of learning target in a novel way

We allow students to earn “up to full credit” after demonstrating understanding of a standard (no score penalty)

SAMPLE REDO SHEET

What does your GRADEBOOK look like???

Citizenship and Effort are tracked but

are not part of the academic

grade.Formative

work turns to yes/no at end

of the unit.Yes=100%

No=0%

Summative work uses codes (to, wws) that

have percentages

set in grading program

(100%, 85%, etc.)
