Story of Kestrel in the Central Highlands
Who we are
• We’re a leading-edge, niche product metallurgical coal company operating the underground Kestrel Mine
• Mine high-fluidity metallurgical coal – or coking coal as it’s known - & ship globally for use as a blend in steel production.
• We cut 9.1Mt of coal per year, with 75-80% reaching final product to minimise waste
• As an underground mine, we’re low impact -most of our surface land is agricultural
• Our namesake is a bird, the nankeen Kestrel – a slender falcon which is a common & welcome sight around the Kestrel operation..
• We’re a sustainable & community focussed business, purpose-driven to achieve outcomes that matter to us, our region & our customers around the world.

Why metallurgical coal near Emerald
• Metallurgical coal is required for production of steel: heat & carbon to meld with iron ore into a strong construction material. There are a couple of other ways to create steel which are less efficient & more expensive – at the moment, met coal is the primary means to create steel for our world today.
• For us, mines are about people, the potential created & fit to place. The people that work with us, our local community, & the people & society which benefit from the deployment of Kestrel coal in the world. We operate as a business near Emerald due to geology: but we’re important to the families & businesses who make their life there, & they’re important to us. Emerald & Central Highlands is our home.

Procurement & supply chain principles
• Our aim is to ensure Kestrel is a high value enterprise - fit for purpose & thriving: • Safe, reliable, high quality, welcome partner & sustainable
• Our community of suppliers are a large part of our story
• As a primary producer, our mine generates significant potential for the region• And we take that seriously - key drivers are responsibility, integrity & fair play in our dealings
1. Employment – staff & contractors
We need skilled, trained people – both direct & specialistAs an outcome it provides
individual & family generated economy, skills & training.
People leave Kestrel with more skills than they came in.
2. Supply sources & partnerships
Key to our success is gear sources & people who can
help us keep going & achieve our plans. We buy local by
preference where practical - it’s important to us. Plus - nearby
sources can often respond quickly.
3. Logistics networks & relationships
Being connected across the region & the world keeps us in
touch whilst being able to move quickly when we need to. We’re a single mine company, with people on the other end
of the phone, & a fair approach to working with
small business.
4. Generate opportunity & potential
We need innovation & new ideas to help us adapt to
changing conditions & improve our operation. With some of the unique challenges we face, we
bring new opportunities into the area - & welcome working with local people to make it happen
for both of us.

When Kestrel took over running Kestrel mine – we wanted to be different. We asked our workforce, we chose blue as our uniforms. The trouble was – no one else made them! Not put off, Kestrel engaged local provider to source manufacturer custom made cobalt blue light weight long sleeve shirts, plus and pants, jackets and some corporate wear.
