SUSTAINABLE URBAN DESIGN

Bremen Best Practices

The City Municipality of  Bremen a Hanseatic city in Northwestern Germany

A commercial and industrial city with a major port on the River Weser, Bremen is part of the  Bremen/Oldenburg Metropolitan Region

2.4 million people

Bremen is the second most populous city in Northern Germanty  and tenth in Germany

Bremen is some 60 km (37 mi) south from the Weser mouth on the North Sea.

SUSTAINABILITY AND INNOVATIONS IN BREMEN

There are many examples of sustainability being put into practice in Bremen

The city distinguishes itself through its dedication on the entrenchment of sustainability into daily life

Solar and wind energy play a great role as do numerous hybrid busses in the public transport system, the new hydropower station and Bremen’s title of "Capital City of Fair Trade". Sustainability is firmly established in the people of Bremen’s daily lives.

Economical Sustainability

Economical sustainability is largely due to the universities and research institutes of Bremen

The strategic and thereby long-term unification of education and research with commerce is a pillar of economic sustainability

Whether it’s the Technology Park surrounding the university, the House of Science or one of the many networking events – in Bremen there are many opportunities for the transfer of knowledge.

Innovation and sustainability for 2020

Bremen’s mission statement for 2020 accords to the motto

Bremen! Liveable –Urban – Connected

Innovative and sustainable economic developments will play a crucial role on the way to the future

By 2020, Bremen would like to

Create the conditions in which expenditures for research and development in commerce and science can be increased.

Establish itself as centre of competence in climate protection, efficient energy production and renewable energy.

• A very energy and resource efficient alternative to urban sprawl

European Dense City

1) CAR BOOKING & SHARING

Car booking can be done through call or online system

Various mobile points are available where the booked car can be collected from the nearest station (43 stations in total)

USING 1 INSTEAD OF OWNING 1

Reduce Parking Demand

Reduce the cost of

Housing

700 private cars replaced by Car-sharing(3100 customers)

The Bremen Car-Sharer shows a reduction of about 5 million kilometres driven less by car (per year)

Increase the use of Public Transport and environmentally friendly transport

Reduction of CO2 emissions of about 1.9 tons per year

Improve environment qualities of cities

Till now 1500 cars are replaced

By 2020,target is 20,000 car sharers

REPLACING 6000 CARS

Car-Sharing is a tool for sustainable and energy efficient urban development

It gives an alternative to car-ownership - and supplements the environmentally friendly modes of transport

It is a kind of 'mobility insurance' for cases when other modes are not sufficient

The integration into intermodal chains and into urban development is key factors of the further development

2) ENHANCED ENVIRONMENTAL FRIENDLY VEHICLES (EEV)

European emission standards for the definition of a clean vehicle.

The most severe exhaust emission standard for internal combustion engines issued to date.

Bremen worked on increasing environmental performance of heavy- and light duty fleet vehicles.

Economic incentives to switch to more environmentally friendly fuels were implemented

Journeys of Bremen Citizens

60 % sustainable modes

Clean Diesel Buses Since 2006, all new buses have fulfilled

the EEV emission standard and now almost the entire fleet meets the EEV standard

(Enhanced Environmental Vehicles)

Emission Bus Fleet Bremen

Clean cars Compressed natural gas (CNG) - In January 2011, there were approximately 350 CNG

vehicles that resulted in a 60% decrease in NOx

emissions

- Partnership with gas provider

Electric - Partnership with energy provider

- Reduce the energy and emission of greenhouse gases

- The silent and emission free brings new possibilities for

improvement in quality of urban life.

Collective Transport (Public Transport)

Easy interchange between different Public Transport modes

- buses

- bicycle

- taxi

Cycling – Individual Transport Modes

Current share of cycling, 26% (By 2020, target is at least 30%)

The bicycle is the ultimate zero-emission-vehicle

‘cycle streets’ with priority for cyclists

Infrastructure Cycle parking with good bicycle racks

(decentralised)

~ 2500 racks inner city On-street bike racks

Interchange / Bike Parking Safe storage 3,000 bikes at Central

Station Bike-racks at all regional train stops

Advantages - reduction of space for cars

- better conditions for walking, cycling

and public transit
