Its name means “single entrance “.

It is in the south-eastern Peloponnese in the prefecture of Laconia.It was separated from the mainland by an earthquake in 475 A.D.

It was founded by the Byzantines in the sixth century . It was occupied by the Turks , Franks and the Venetians.

IN MONEMVASIA THERE WERE A LOT OF HOUSES.MOST OF THE HOUSES HAD A BASEMENT AND TWO FLOORS.

THERE WERE SQUARES AND CHURCHES TOO.

THE WATER WAS SAVED IN WELLS AND CISTERNS.

THERE WERE ALSO STABLES AND STORES.

PEOPLE LIVED IN THE UPPER TOWN WHEN THERE WAS WAR .

PEOPLE LIVED IN THE LOWER TOWN WHEN THERE WAS PEACE.

STAIRS AND FORTRESSES JOINED THE LOWER AND UPPER TOWN

•Builders used a mixture of lime ,bricks, sand to built walls. They also used rocks and limestone

•They used pebbles for lanes

•They built gutters to drive and collect water in tanks

•They made beveled corners to help crossing animal, because paths were narrow

•They opened holes to let the rain water out of the walls.

The castle was build on a rocky hill.

There was a gate leading into the castle.

The castle of Monemvasia had strong double walls .

They were fortresses and battlements.

Cannons were used for the defence of the castle.
