The Characteristics of a Great LeaderBy: Craig Beyer

I. Introduction

II. The characteristics it takes to be a great leader

A. Compassion 1.Nehemiah 1:4 Now it came about

when I heard these words, I sat down and wept and mourned for days; and I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven.

2. Love is the foundation of Christian leadership!

3.People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care!

B. Prayer

1. The effectiveness of your public leadership is determined by the effectiveness of your private prayer life!

C. A positive attitude1. Nehemiah 2:1 And it came about

in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, that wine was before him, and I took up the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had not been sad in his presence.

2. Leaders are to be encouragers not discouragers!

D. Concentration 1.One of the key differences

between leading and following is leaders are always thinking of the future before everybody else!

E. Creativity1.Creativity can be developed

F. Courage1.Nehemiah 2:4-5 Then the king

said to me, “What would you request?” So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said to the king, “If it please the king, and if your servant has found favor before you, send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers’ tombs, that I may rebuild it.”

2.Courage is not the absence of fear; it’s moving ahead in spite of your fear.3.Another word for courage is faith

G. A clear conscience

1.Nehemiah 5:14-17 Moreover, from the day that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year to the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, for twelve years, neither I nor my kinsmen have eaten the governor’s food allowance. But the former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people and took from them bread and wine besides forty shekels of silver; even their servants domineered the people.

But I did not do so because of the fear of God. And I also applied myself to the work on this wall; we did not buy any land, and all my servants were gathered there for the work. Moreover, there were at my table one hundred and fifty Jews and officials, besides those who came to us from the nations that were around us.

H. Conviction 1.An opinion is something you would

argue about; a conviction is something you’d die for!

III. Nehemiah based his convictions on four things

A. A compelling purpose

B. A clear perspective

C. Continual prayer

D. Courageous persistence

IV. Conclusion
