Why did the miniature circuit breakers trip again
already? The customer wants to set
the plant in operation as soon as possible!
I'm confused. But we installed according
to standard installation practice!
“We’ve installed to standard installation practice!”Photovoltaic installations need different rating.
Dear Reader,
Up to the present time Germany has been the largest market for photovolta-ic systems in the world. This situation will change - in the meantime many other countries are catching up.
Amongst others the Indian government has enacted a programme that will extend the solar energy capacity of the country to 20,000 megawatts by 2022.
Many electro-technical requirements are linked with the installation of pho-tovoltaic systems - and many mistakes can be made leading to considerable damage.
Hensel has many years of experience in the field of the installation of photo-voltaic systems - not only on the direct current (DC) but also on the alternating current (AC) sides.
Make use of our experience in this field; we wish you a successful start in a very promising growth market of the future.
Yours sincerely
F.G. Hensel.Managing Director Gustav Hensel GmbH & Co. KG
P.S. In Germany, Elektro-Tipp has been published for more than 25 years – it appears quarterly and has a fine repu-tation among the experts.
Photovoltaic installations require a new way of thinking about rating and device selection!
What is different about photovoltaic installations?Power distribution in buildings
Power distribution in photovoltaic plants
Applying the si-multaneity factor
Due to the low simultaneity factor, the installed distribution board is often rated according to the number of modules.
PV plants have a simultaneity factor of 1!Which is why the distribution boards in PV plants have to be rated differently and not simply according to the number of modules.
Influenced by heat from the simultaneity factor and load
In electrical installations, power loss fluctuates depending on the number of switched on consumers.
Low average effective power loss
Constant high loads lead to high average power dissipation during the energy production phase.
Power dissipation therefore needs to be reduced to the point where the maximum temperature for devices is not exceeded.

Summary: High power loss levels can lead to exceeding the maximum permit-ted temperature for devices meaning that protection devices can trip even when beneath rated current levels.
Protective device selection
Protective device selection and rating to protect cables related to the current resp. the load of the consumer.
Protective device selection and rating to protect cables related to the current resp. load of the solar inverter on the AC side.

Select protective devices, e.g. miniature circuit breakers (MCB)
Select protective devices in the form of a fuse or miniature circuit breaker.
HRC with knife link
Surge arrester
Miniature circuit breaker
solar inverterto metering
Unskilled persons can use miniature circuit breakers without any danger as the protection against direct contact always remains in place and the device can thus be switched under load.
A tripped miniature circuit breaker (MCB) can be recognised immediately!
1. Miniature circuit breaker use
Hensel PV inverter collectors correctly rated and tested: e.g. circuit-breaker box
4. N and PE terminals in separate boxes
High simultaneity and load:
Devices spaced apart allow a better radiation of the power dissipation.
Additional slots assure increased air circulation in the enclo-sure.
The larger enclosure increase the dissipated power loss.
2. Assessing simultaneity and load capacity
3. Standard installation benefits
Equipment set apart allows for better power loss dissipation. Positioning aids make sure that the installed equipment is automatically set at an appropriate interval.
At the same time the miniature circuit breaker is installed in the right position relative to the protection cover.
Your benefit: Tested product solutions! Standardised installation benefits,
products provide for tested positioning of miniature circuit breakers (MCB)
