Dive Ireland International 2015 in as-sociation with Diving Ireland (TheIrish Underwater Council) and LoughDerg Sub Aqua Club is the highlightof the SCUBA diving calender. The above scenario is nor-mal for a large percentage of stu-dents, and it is ok to feel confusedand lost in relation to picking acourse that will lead you to employ-ment. As an 18year old you maythink I am not ready to go to college.Well do not go, do not be afraid todefer that decision. Get a part-timejob , volunteer ,learn to drive ,learn anew skill. Take time out.
If you do want to go to col-lege and still confused set aside timeevery week to talk to others, researchcourses, always tuning in to the sub-jects you will be studying on eachcourse. Sit in a space and think about
your career values, your interests, andyour aptitudes.
If you do not know whatyou want two things can happen, youdo nothing about it and keep worry-ing, or you do something about it andmove off the starting point.
Studying for a Leaving Certis tough work, but absolutely tougherif you do not know what you are aim-ing for! Never be afraid to expressyour feelings of anxiety, fear, in rela-tion to not knowing what career youwould like. Being confused is ok, do-ing nothing about it, maybe not as ok.So good luck with your forth comingmocks and talk, talk, talk, remember-ing you might be sure of where youare going and you might not have aclue, but as you prepare for the finallap you are developing skills un beknown to yourself that you can trans-fer to your next stage in life---organi-zation, time management, flexibility,working under pressure, always re-membering “The roots of education arebitter, but the fruits are sweet”

Sports Strapping- AGood or Bad Thing?
As ever sports person knows, strapping of periph-eral joints by a physiotherapist prior to training ora match is a common occurrence in any dressingroom. Players initially start getting a particularbody part strapped secondary to sustaining an inju-ry, but does that mean you can just forget aboutthe rehab and go back playing?
It is important to remember that strapping of anyjoint due to injury is only an immediate and tem-porary solution. Strapping only supports the areafor the period the tape is applied and does not en-courage any rehabilitation or retraining of the un-derlying neuromuscular impairment during thistime. So although strapping as a standalone solu-tion allows a person to continue to play, it does notpromote or encourage a complete return to full fit-ness. This then becomes an issue when a playerwho is eager to return to playing, skips the rehabphase and relies on the strapping to compensatefor the insufficiencies that he/she are lacking as aresult of the injury. This ultimately means that thisplayer is always at a higher risk of re injury andadditional damage. It also may explain why play-ers, although still playing, experience ongoingpain and discomfort throughout the season.
It is therefore important to remember that rehabili-tation is the key to a successful and uneventful re-turn to play. It is imperative for any player whohas been injured to seek their local chartered phys-iotherapist. This ensures that they receive the cor-rect advice and help with managing theirinitial/ongoing injury and will guarantee the de-sign and implementation of an appropriate rehabil-itation programme so that a return to full fitnesscan be achieved. It also means that strapping nolonger becomes your primary treatment and pre-ventative measure, but a complementary adjunctthat is part of an all round rehabilitation strategy tokeeping you fit, healthy and on top of your game.

Anxiety. Generalised AnxietyDisorder (GAD). Rumination as acause of.Some writers have described GAD asis a feeling of trepidation aboutimpending doom, filling the suffererwith unease, and a sense of being outof control. This unease springs fromexaggerated worry and tension, eventhough there is little happening towarrant it. Sufferers may be overlyworried about health, money, family,work and so on. They know that theyare worrying over small matters, butcannot shake the tension and worry.So, generalised anxiety is anunreasonable worry that is verydifficult to control. It interferes withliving a full life, and if it is severe, itcan restrict a person to a great degree,so that carrying out the simplest oftasks may become a heavy burden. Nowonder that many victims suffer fromdepression. They are constantlytormented by a never-ending loop ofthinking, and rumination. It has longbeen established, as I have shown inmy articles on depression thatrumination is one of the behavioursassociated with depression.Research has shown that generalisedanxiety is much more common inwomen. It is also true that womenruminate more than men, andrumination (obsessive thinking) isnormally associated withanxiety/depressive symptoms. Thosewho ruminate are more likely tosuccumb to anxiety, because, as Imentioned, are plagued by a never-ending cascade of negative thinkingthroughout the day. They focus ontheir symptoms of distress and alwayslook on the negative side,strengthening their sense of beingtrapped in a negative spiral. Theirresponsive thoughts about theirdistress focus on their powerlessness,and generate hopelessness. They areuncertain about how to manage stresssituations, and whether they cancontrol these situations. Thisuncertainty keeps them on thetreadmill of the thinking circuit, sothat the future always looks bleak.They constantly ask questions abouttheir situations, focus exclusively ontheir symptoms and what may happento them, but never find certainanswers. Consequently, they becomemore sensitised and vigilant, and thiscan evolve into a constant state ofanxiety, or GAD. Their questioningof their situation continues to feedinto this anxiety. It has beensuggested that excessive ruminationis caused by building increasinglylarge neural connections of negativethoughts as the rumination intensifies.
In other words, this behaviourpractised on a continuous basisconstructs more and more negativepathways in our brain. That is asobering thought for anyone with apessimistic outlook.As I have said in my articles ondepression, people who ruminate aremore prone to binge drinking, eatingdisorders, and self-harm.Unfortunately, it is not easy to shedthis behaviour. Counselling can bevery helpful here, but care must betaken that when exploring the roots ofanxiety. Rumination is notencouraged. This is a balancing act.For example, thinking aboutchildhood may be necessary, but thatdoes not mean becoming obsessedwith it. We go back to childhood toemotionally re-experience it so thatwe can move on. Of course, we canuse the themes of the rumination as away of exploring issues.The symptoms of GAD are like thoseof the other types of anxietymentioned below. Sufferers may besubject to uncontrollable trembling,muscle aches, headaches, hot flushes,spasms, unease, shortness of breath,palpitations, sweating, stomach aches,and tachycardia (rapid heartbeat).These are very distressing symptoms,and experiencing them may fuelfeelings of anxiousness. There is adanger that they might be mistaken asthe cause of GAD, rather than itssymptom.Some sufferers feel fearful andaggressive, and others suffer spells ofdizziness. They cannot sleepproperly, lose their appetite, are easilystartled, and find it difficult toconcentrate. They may be restless andfidgety, may also have the urge to goto the bathroom frequently.
