Bord na Móna is constructing a new wind farm at Bruckana and has decided toset up a project-benefit-scheme aimed at the communities around this newdevelopment. This project-benefit-scheme will complement the existingconsequential benefitsof the development such as employment and rates to local authorities and it isenvisaged that the scheme will be funded by an annual contribution from thewind farm over its operational life.

In order to establish a benefit structure that meets community needs, Bord naMóna would like to consult with the relevant communities on a number of aspectsprior to the introduction of the benefit scheme:

• W hat type of projects, facilities and local developments should besupportedby the benefit scheme?

• H ow far from the boundary of the wind farm should these benefits bedistributed?

• W hat criteria should be applied in selecting and prioritising projects forsupport under the scheme?

• H ow should the benefit scheme be governed and administered?

One day a farmer's donkey fell downinto a well. The animal cried piteous-ly for hours as the farmer tried to fig-ure out what to do. Finally, hedecided the animal was old, and thewell needed to be covered up any-way; it just wasn't worth it to retrievethe donkey. He invited all his neigh-bours to come over and help him.They all grabbed a shovel and beganto shovel dirt into the well. At first,the donkey realized what was hap-pening and cried horribly. Then, toeveryone's amazement he quieteddown. A few shovel loads later, thefarmer finally looked down the well.He was astonished at what he saw.With each shovel of dirt that hit hisback, the donkey was doing some-thing amazing. He would shake it offand take a step up. As the farmer's

neighbours continued to shovel dirton top of the animal, he would shakeit off and take a step up. Pretty soon,everyone was amazed as the donkeystepped up over the edge of the welland happily trotted off! MORAL :Life is going to shovel dirt on you, allkinds of dirt. The trick to getting outof the well is to shake it off and takea step up. Each of our troubles is asteppingstone. We can get out of thedeepest wells just by not stopping,never giving up! Shake it off and takea step up. Remember the five simplerules to be happy: 1. Free your heartfrom hatred - Forgive. 2. Free yourmind from worries - Most never hap-pens. 3. Live simply and appreciatewhat you have. 4. Give more. 5. Ex-pect less from people but more fromyourself.

The Donkey in the Well

LEARNING FROM ART is an exhibitionillustrating the work of young people be-tween the ages of 5 to 18 from 32 countiesin Ireland. The concept behind LEARN-ING FROM ART is the process that takesplace when art becomes the catalyst forboth learning and creativity. The aim ofthe exhibition is to encourage young peo-ple to be curious and creative by usingtheir national collection as a source of in-spiration – to learn something about artwhile partaking in their own creative proc-ess.

LEARNING FROM ART comprises thework of primary and post primary studentsfrom 32 counties. The children interpreteda picture from the National Gallery in the

form of a poem, a piece of prose or an art-work. These art works display the widestforms of expression from the naïve to thesophisticated, the graphic to the painterlyand the humorous to the reflective. An ex-tensive variety of media is explored in-cluding ink, pastels, watercolour, posterpaint, gouache, acrylic and collage. Alsocreated were hundreds of lively poems to-gether with several stimulating pieces ofprose. The result of this outpouring of en-ergy and creativity is an exhibition ofworks by Irish young people that is valuedand treasured in its own right.

Comprising 37 works, and 3 explanatoryposters, the exhibition is accompanied by acomplimentary catalogue of essays by art-

Domestic abuse and sexual violence isan alarming problem in our country.Services are there to help but are theygood enough?

The SPEAK UP CAFÉ initiative isbeing organised to involve individualswho have been affected by domesticabuse and/or sexual violence to comeand tell organisations as to how serv-ices can be improved.

The SPEAK UP CAFÉ events are partof a wide range of initiatives under-taken by the Mid West Regional Ad-visory Committee on ViolenceAgainst Women and local agenciesduring the 16 Days of Action Cam-paign. The 16 Days of Action Cam-paign is an international campaign toraise awareness of the reality of do-mestic abuse and violence and to push

for positivechange to in-crease women'ssafety.

The SPEAKUP CAFÉ isopen to indi-viduals whohave experi-enced domesticabuse and/orsexual violenceeither currentlyor in the past.It is open tofamily mem-bers and closefriends whomay be livingwith or sup-porting survi-vors. It is alsoaimed at those

who may not have accessed a servicebut could have potentially benefitedfrom doing so.

The SPEAK UP CAFÉ model is builton the assumption that people alreadyhave within them the wisdom and ex-pertise to advise organisations as towhat’s important when dealing with acrisis or on-going problems related todomestic abuse and /or sexual vio-lence. The organisers believe that bylistening to what the public and serv-ice users say is essential if organisa-tions genuinely wish to improveservices. The changes will make serv-ices more relevant, of a higher qualityand which staff are proud to provide.

Correct Inflation PressureInflation pressure is important, as thepressurised air inside your tyre has to sup-port the weight of your vehicle and itsload. Tyre pressures may vary dependingon the vehicle model and the load beingcarried.

We recommend that you check your tyrepressures regularly against the manufac-turer’s specifications for your vehicle (re-fer to your owners handbook) at yourlocal service station.

Wheel Alignment & Balancing

You may hear the terms ‘wheel align-ment’ and ‘wheel balancing’ used inter-changeably, but they are separate issues,both important in the upkeep of your tyresand vehicle.

Wheel alignment consists of adjusting theangles of the wheels so that they are per-pendicular to the ground and parallel toeach other. Aligning your wheels can helpmaximise tyre life and ensure that yourvehicle drives straight and true when onlevel surfaces.

The symptoms of a misaligned wheelinclude:

uneven or rapid tyre wearpulling or drifting away from a straightlinedrifting on a straight, level roadspokes of the steering wheel tending to-ward one side while driving on a straight,level roadWheel balancing allows the tyres andwheels to spin without causing any vibra-tions. Your wheels’ balance is gauged bychecking for any heavy spots on thewheel-tyre combination and compensat-ing for such flaws by placing a measuredbalancing weight on the opposite side ofthe wheel from where the heavy spot islocated.

The symptoms of a wheel that is out ofbalance include:

vibration in the steering wheel, seat orfloor-pan, usually at motorway speeds‘scalloped’ or ‘cupped’ wear pattern onthe tiresIf your tyres demonstrate any of thesymptoms outlined above, we advise that

you seek advice from your local au-thorised tyre repair centre.

Tyre condition

Tyres displaying signs of deteriorationshould be removed and not used onthe road.

There are several signs of deteriorat-ing tyres you should keep an eye outfor:

cracking/crazing of the side wall ofthe tyre, caused by its flexing distor-tion of the tyre tread deformation ofthe main body of the tyre damagepersistent loss of inflation pressuredeep cuts

The new climbing and boulderinggym in Upperchurch was recentlynamed after a school competitionheld throughout October. Primaryand secondary schools across thecounty Tipperary were invited tocome up with an exciting name forthe new facility and the centre wasinundated with hundreds of entries.The team behind the wall wereamazed at the quality of names sub-mitted and it took considerable timeto choose the best name. The newfacility has now been named ‘UpperLimits’ – as it reflects Upperchurch(being a bit on the Upper side!) andthe climbing as well as showcasingthe experience that can be had by allat the climbing wall. The team inUpperchurch are delighted with thenew name and want to say a bigthank you to the hundreds of chil-dren who submitted brilliant names.

It is often the case that great mindsthink alike and so it was with thewinning name. The name ‘UpperLimits’ was actually submitted threetimes by primary school students
