When people come into theconfessional, they keep talking abouthaving fallen."The mayor started to laugh, realizingthat no one had told the new priestabout the code word. Before the mayor could explain, thepriest shook an accusing finger at the

Tim Rowe keeps bees in west Cork, where he has developed the rose hivemethod, emphasising colony healthand increase.

Tim also teaches beekeeping toadults and children, and his newbook, Bees, Hives, Honey! Beekeep-ing for Children, is a truly wonderfulrecord of how to get started with bee-keeping. In fact, the book is a full-colour, generously illustrated, hands-on start-to-finish guide that will be asuseful to adults just starting as it is tochildren.

The book follows four groups of chil-dren, including kids as young as 7,from absolute beginners to confidentbeekeepers. Lovely photographsshow them building hives, collectingwild swarms, managing the colonies, and harvesting their own honey. There are tips for adults helping childbeekeepers, plans for building hives,a glossary, and a very handy chart

that shows you what you have to dothroughout the year.

Whether you’re a child or an adultgetting started with bees, we recom-mend Tim Rowe’s new book highly. It’s a beautiful and invaluable re-source.

Hurling Challenge For Zambia

The Under 21 hurlers of Kilkennyand Tipperary will lock horns in a“Hurling Challenge for Zambia” onWednesday March 7 next at 7.30pmunder the lights at the home of new-ly-crowned All-Ireland JuniorChampions St. Patrick’s Ballyragget. An additional honour for the Club onthe night will be that, as reigningCounty Under 21 Champions, one oftheir own players will Captain theKilkenny Under 21s this year. Thismatch is another of the on-going fun-draising efforts in Kilkenny CBS aspart of the Zambia ImmersionProject. The CBS has adopted whatis known as the ‘WaSH’ Programmefor 10 Zambian Schools run by theChristian Brothers. Eleven CBS stu-

dents accompanied by 5 teachers willtravel to Zambia for a 2 week Immer-sion working in the 10 schools. Threeof the teachers involved hail fromTipperary; Principal Tom Clarkefrom Clonmore, Pat Downey fromBoherlahan/Dualla and PaulO’Donoghue from Cashel. The fundsraised will be invested in providingWater, Sanitation and Hygiene hencethe acronym ‘WaSH’. Zambia is oneof Africa’s poorest nations and basicfacilities are often non-existant. Toi-let  facilities in the 10 schools areextremely basic and in many casesare just open’ pit latrines’. FormerPrincipal of both Kilkenny C.B.S andThurles C.B.S. and avid hurling sup-porter , Bro. Michael O’Donoghue isthe driving force behind this projectwhich strives to provide adequatewater, sanitation and hygiene ameni-ties in these centres of education ca-tering for over 10,000 students. TheZambia Immersion Committeewould like to thank both Under 21Managers, Richie Mulrooney andKen Hogan for their unstinting sup-port in agreeing to this fixture andalso to St. Patrick’s Ballyragget forproviding their pitch on the night.Admission to the game is 5 euro andall proceeds go towards the financingof this worthwhile project. Why notcome along and enjoy what shouldbe an interesting and informativegame of hurling between two age-oldrivals whilst making a contribution tothe lives of thousands of young Zam-bians who are infinitely worse offthan we are despite the recession wefind ourselves in? Your supportwould be greatly appreciated.

How much is the household tax? €100

Who has to register/pay? Every homeowner in the state(1.8m) is being asked to register. Everyhomeowner is being asked to pay exceptsome groups such as council tenants(including shared ownership), people livingin named ghost estates, those entitled tomortgage interest supplement and ownersof commercial property.

When is the deadline for registration? March 31 2012

Will this money be used to improve local services? No. Local authority budgets have beenslashed to pay for the bailout and this taxwill not even cover all these cuts.

Why does the government want you to register? It wants the information you give themwhen registering to build up a database. They would not be able to introduce prop-erty tax (2013) and water tax (2014) with-out this.

Isn't a a property tax progressive? There is nothing "progressive" about tax-ing the homes of ordinary people. Themansions of the super-wealthy should betaxed but this can be done instead via awealth and assets tax.

How much would a property and water tax be?Probably more than €1000 a year.

Can I be charged extra if I don't pay?Yes. There is a 10% late charge for thefirst 6 months, a 20% late charge for thesecond six months and a 30% late chargeafter that. There is also an extra 1%charge for each month. That means apenalty of €42 in a year.

Can I be fined for non- registration?Yes. But this is not an automatic fine. Thelocal authority would have to take you tocourt and the court would have to findagainst you. You could receive a "ClassC" fine of up to a maximum €2500.

Can a fine be deducted from my wages or social welfare? Not unless the government changes thelaw. And only then if the local authoritytakes you to court and the court findsagainst you.

Can this be stopped? Yes. If a huge number of peoplerefuse to register, the government will beunable to bring everyone to court. Thiscampaign will appeal to trade unionists toboycott all work aimed at penalising non-payers. There will be an almighty politicalstorm if the government start cases againstordinary workers protesting against an un-just tax used to fund an unjust bailout. TheCampaign also intends to establish a legaldefense fund from some of the €5 mem-bership fees paid by those who join thecampaign.

Has a government ever been beaten on an issue like this?Yes. Thatcher's poll tax was defeated inBritain. "People Power" beat water charg-es here in the 1990's.

What can I do to support the campaign?Don't register. Don't pay. Contact us.Take a window poster, car sticker, leaflets.Come to your local meeting. Get yourfriends, neighbours, workmates involved.Spread the word. Join the Campaign bypaying the €5 membership fee to helpfund Campaign materials and the legaldefense fund.

CounsellingBy Jim O’Shea

Depression(Continued from last issue)

Some studies show that while womenare far more likely to have first onsetsof depression than men, both areequally likely to experience recur-rence. Other studies have found thatfemales are more liable to recurrenceand males more likely to have persist-ent depression. Those who sufferedpersistent depression are more likely toalso have a comorbid (co-existing)complaint.It seems, too, that men may have dif-ferent stressors; for example researchin the last few years show that 1 in 7men who become unemployed willdevelop a depressive illness in the fol-lowing 6 months. After relationshipdifficulties, unemployment is the thingmost likely to push a man into seriousdepression, because work is often themain source of a man’s sense of worthand self-esteem. The negative effect ofunemployment is likely to becomestronger if the female partner becomesthe bread-winner.Men, also, have far higher rates ofcomorbid alcohol abuse and depend-ence than women. Many report thatthey do not experience depression untilthey had become dependent on alco-hol. They also face a higher risk ofheart disease, and show a much higherrate of completed suicides. There is arelationship between suicide andheavy drinking, and, in the U.S. 7% ofmen with major depression commitsuicide as against 1% of depressedwomen. Depressed men younger than25 are 10 times more likely to commitsuicide than depressed women in thatage category. It is also significant thatmen are more likely than women tobecome depressed in the context ofdivorce or separation. I think that thisstems from how men are treated by thecourts in relation to access to theirchildren. Some men become suicidalwhen they feel that they do not havesufficient access to their children. Iimagine the impact would be the samefor women if they were similarly treat-ed.Men’s behaviours are seriously affect-ed by depression. They tend to with-draw from relationships, avoid gettinghelp, have an over-involvement withwork, angry outbursts, irritability andaggressiveness, an inability to cry, changes in concentration, sleep andweight, and sometimes lose an interestin sexual activity. It has also beenfound that depressed men are moreaffected at work than depressed wom-en, and are more affected in their so-cial activities and in how they relate topeople. They show less impairment intheir levels of physical functioning andvitality than depressed women. But,elderly men are more at risk of dying

during a bout of depression than elder-ly women. The reason for this may bethe lethal effect of depression andheart problems, which are more likelyto occur in men. Further, men do notseem to be equipped to deal emotional-ly with hopelessness and helplessness. So while men turn more often tosports, hobbies or alcohol, depressedwomen are more likely to turn tofriends, family, religion, laughter orcrying as a response.Bearing in mind the gender differencein symptoms and responses outlinedabove, other explanations have beenput forward to explain why morewomen suffer depression than men.The roles that society imposes onwomen may partly explain this. Thereis a significant relationship betweendepressive disorders and being ahomemaker. Sometimes being ahomemaker means not having an in-come of their own, and dependencysometimes breeds depression. Becausefemales are more socialised to orienttowards others, and to suppress ex-pressions of aggression, they are morevulnerable to depression in a socialcontext. Women’s depression is morelikely than men’s to occur if they expe-rience low levels of social support.Vincent Lorant, of the Catholic Uni-versity of Louvain, and his colleaguescarried out a 7 year longitudinal studyin 2007, which shows that women aremore vulnerable to depression thanmen when they experience a down-ward change in poverty and suffer fi-nancial strain.
