After 35 years of marriage, a hus-band and wife came for counselling. When asked what the problem was,the wife went into apassionate, painful tirade listing ev-ery problem they had ever had in theyears they had been married. On and on and on: neglect, lack ofintimacy, emptiness, loneliness, feel-ing unloved and unlovable, an entirelaundry list of unmet needs she hadendured. Finally, after allowing thisfor a sufficient length of time, thetherapist got up, walked around the

desk and, after asking the wife tostand, embraced and kissed her pas-sionately as her husband watchedwith a raised eyebrow. The womanshut up and quietly sat down asthough in a daze. The therapistturned to the husband and said, "Thisis what your wife needs, at least 3times a week. Can you do this?" "Well, I can drop her off here onMondays and Wednesdays, but onFridays, I play golf."

An invisible man marries an invisiblewoman. The kids were nothing tolook at either.

Deja Moo: The feeling that you'veheard this bull before.

Two cows standing next to each oth-er in a field, Daisy says to Dolly,"Iwas artificially inseminated thismorning." "I don't believe you," saidDolly. "It's true, no bull!" exclaimedDaisy.

I went to buy some camouflage trou-sers the other day but I couldn't findany.

Note seen on hardware store in asmall village: "No paint will bemixed without a note from the wife"”

The man who drives like hell isbound to get there.

At one point during a game, thecoach said to one of his young play-ers, "Do you understand what coop-eration is? What a team is?"The little boy nodded in the affirma-tive.

"Do you understand that what mat-ters is whether we win together as ateam?"The little boy nodded yes."So," the coach continued, "when afree is called, or you're booked, youdon't argue or curse or attack the ref-eree. Do you understand all that?"Again the little boy nodded."Good," said the coach, "now goover there and explain it to yourmother."

Bob went over to his friend Joe'shouse and was amazed at how wellJoe treated his wife. He often told herhow attractive she was, compliment-ed her on her cooking and showeredher with hugs and kisses."Gee," Bob remarked later, "you re-ally make a big fuss over your wife"."I started to appreciate her moreabout six months ago," Joe said. "Ithas revived our marriage and wecouldn't be happier."Inspired, Bob hurried home, huggedhis wife and told her how much heloved her and said he wanted to hearall about her day. But she burst intotears. "Honey," Bob said, "whats' thematter?"."This has been the worst day," shereplied. "This morning Billy fell offhis bike and broke his ankle, then thewashing machine broke. Now to topit off, you come home drunk !".

Some people prefer to blow dry theirhair while others leave their hair todry naturally. There are advantagesand disadvantages to both choicesand in the end it comes down to per-sonal preference and lifestyle. When it comes to air drying hair, theadvantage is that it is natural andcheap, and the hair, as it is not sub-ject to excessive heat, is less suscep-tible to damage. The disadvantage isthat hair is at its weakest when it iswet. Therefore it is important not torub hair dry with a towel as thiscauses the hair to become brittle.Hair should be blotted with a towel totake out the moisture. Be careful to totug or pull at hair while it is wet, andwhen the moisture is blotted out ofthe hair, fluff it out with your fingers.

Blow drying the hair is of coursemore convenient especially for peo-ple who live fast-paced lives and ofcourse, blow drying adds volume tothe hair. However, blow drying, es-pecially if it is overdone, can be dan-gerous to the hair as it can make thehair very brittle. Before blow dryinghair, make sure that the moisture hasbeen blotted out first. Keep the dryerat about six inches away from thehead and move around. Do not drythe hair completely. Always leavehair slightly damp.Whichever wayyou do dry your hair, remember thathair is very fragile, so be very carefulwhen handling it.

Stomachs churned and hearts wrenchedas the home support prayed and willedNicole Walsh’s 59th minute free over thebar-agony gradually replaced by ecstasyas the ball drifted ever nearer the blackspot.

The Premier County staged a sensationalfightback to overturn a nine point defi-cit, outscoring the Cats by 3-4 to 0-3.Tipperary started superbly with SarahFryday’s long range effort sneaking pasta luckless Aine Kinsella. However, thehome side failed to register anotherscore for the remainder of the half, asBrendan Williams and Vincent Sheil’scombined charges asserted control invirtually all areas of the field.

The Kilkenny half-forward line soonfound their running game, aided by im-peccable delivery from the outstandingGrace Walsh and Kelly Hamilton.Points from Claire Phelan, Orla Hanrick, and Aisling Curtis drew Kilkenny level, but crucially they were finding and ex-ploiting gaps. Claire Phelan dispatched alow drive to the corner of the net toseize the initiative. Points from MiriamWalsh and Curtis had Tipperary furtheradrift, before Orla Hanrick pounced toraise another green flag on the stroke ofhalf-time. Tipperary trailed by 2-6 to 1-0at the interval.

Tipperary were in complete disarray. They looked a mere shadow of the sidethat took the game so valiantly to Clare(in the semi-final) when serious ques-tions were asked. Heads dropped withevery concession, their first touch wassimply not good enough. You’d be for-given for thinking this game had gonebeyond their reach, nothing more than alost cause, damage limitation somemight say. But ultimately you’d be prov-en wrong on all fronts-and in somestyle.

Tim Maher and Andy Ryan rang thechanges at half-time. Anne Eviston, Ter-esa Ryan, Tara Kennedy, Alice Fogarty, and Mairead Teehan all entered the frayat various stages. Tipperary needed aleader, someone to stand up and becounted-and they found it in Sarah Fry-day. Fryday burst forward with intent, and despite taking several blows, shehad the awareness and confidence todrill the ball home from the edge of the21. The crowd responded with chantsand urgency, and when Brid Quinn(captain) pointed from close range, theyknew the lead was manageable. ANicole Walsh free was cleared into thepath of Michaela Graham. Her effortwhisked beyond the desperate reach ofKinsella, the lead was now down to two.Substitute Tara Kennedy cut it to a soli-tary point minutes later.

It looked as if Tipperary would kick onfrom here. However, Kilkenny refusedto wilt and points from Lydia Fitzpatrick(2) and substitute Emma Kavanagh sawthem re-establish a healthy four pointadvantage with 10 minutes remaining.Nicole Walsh netted for the home sideafter a surging dart forward. The nar-

rowest of margins again separated thesides. Caoimhe Maher popped a hand-pass to Alice Fogarty, and when she lev-elled the tie, the crowd rallied the troopsfor one final assault. Nicole Walsh stoodover a 45m free with one minute re-maining. The crowd hushed as all theweight fell on Walsh’s shoulders. As thesaying goes: “score and you will alwaysbe remembered, miss and you will neverbe forgotten”. It’s a savage burden thatno sportswoman should have to dealwith. Would it enter her mind, is shenervous?

Calmness personified-she nailed it.

Tipperary had a number of key perform-ers on the day. The full-back line (JulieAnn Bourke, Sheila Ryan, and LouiseMcLoughlin) repealed and broke up nu-merous Kilkenny attacks in the secondhalf, despite a shaky opening. SarahFryday impressed with her composureand speed, her second half goal being amajor turning point. Substitutes AnneEviston, Teresa Ryan, Tara Kennedy,Alice Fogarty, and Mairead Teehanworked a treat when introduced. TeresaRyan worked tirelessly to keep the Kil-kenny forward line at bay. Alice Fogartychanged the game in Tipp’s favour withher pace and strength causing countlessproblems for the Kilkenny defence.Congratulations to Tim Maher(Manager), Andy Ryan (Coach), Mau-reen Connolly, and Clodagh Loughnane(Selectors). Huge plaudits must also goto the home support that travelled insuch vast numbers. It was immenselyappreciated by players and managementalike. Hopefully you can share in thisterrific victory.

It was a day where Tipperary entered thegame as girls, but left as women.

Tipperary Star Player of the Match:Louise McLoughlin (Silvermines)

Referee: Mike O’ Kelly (Cork)

Andy Ryan (Coach) on the turningpoint: “The subs were a vital part; theywere always going to be. Sarah’s goalset down the marker in the second halfand we rallied well. I felt we were set-tled in the dressing room, but it was adifferent ball game in the first half.”

Home support: “The support we hadwas inspirational. The crowd roaringafter Sarah’s goal got us motoring again;it was worth two goals in its own right. The Tipp support has been excellent allalong, be it U16 or minor. I can’t praisethem enough.”(see back cover for photos from thematch by Mike Ryan)

Tipperary/Kilkenny Final ForMe!After attendingthe All-IrelandQuarter Finalsin Thurles two weekends ago, Idoubt very much that Brian Cody orDeclan Ryan were quaking in theirboots! To say the games and stand-ard of hurling by the four teams wasaverage would be an understatement.Dublin took their goals well but real-ly Limerick’s defence was all overthe place for the first twenty minutes, when they did finally settle down itwas too late. Donal O Grady refusedto move the spare man in the fullback line up the field and Dublinwere happy to have a 3 on 2 in theirfull back line especially with KevinDownes being a handful. I think Da-ly will probably keep an extra man inthe backs and hope that forwards cangenerate space and win frees whichPaul Ryan will convert. I think itreally is the only way they have anychance, but I think while this tacticwill prevent Tipp from scoring goalsit just won’t be enough and it’s aTipperary win by six points for me.Galway were so bad against Water-ford that you can’t take really muchfrom this game. Okay after they gothammered by Tipperary they showedspirit to re-group and put in a gooddisplay. But Galway were terrible. After five minutes of second half itwas quiet clear that their heads haddropped and there wasn’t an ounce offight in them. You really would haveto wonder what John McIntrye hasbeen doing up there for last threeyears. As for Waterford well I thinkKilkenny will hammer them and getgreat pleasure in doing so. Like I

said before the Munster Final, if Kil-kenny stop good ball going to JohnMullane then Waterford will reallystruggle. I fancy Kilkenny by at leasteight points and setup the final we’veall predicted!!!

Padraig Harrington – Arething’s really that bad!!So my predictionfor Padraig Har-rington in The Opennever materialisedand last weekend hefailed to make thecut at the IrishOpen! On SaturdayHarrington an-nounced that hiscoach Bob Torrance and he haveparted company. Okay, fair enoughhe isn’t producing exceptional golf atthe moment and has lost his consist-ency but I still think there is a mas-sive over-reaction to his form. He isstill ranked 67th best golfer in theworld on the latest rankings. He hasgone this far with changes to hisswing etc so he has to see it out now.In The Open he showed patches ofgreat form so he still has the game,he just needs more consistency. Thiswill come I have no doubt.

Martin Perry –Sports PsychologistDarren Clarke – UnconsciousPuttingSo Darren Clarke, supported by twosports psychologists, Bob Rotellaand Mike Finnigan, is 2011 OpenChampion. Mike Finnigan was work-ing with the Ulsterman on his atti-tude and motivation. Rotella on

the critical de-tails of golf per-formance.

More specifi-cally, Rotellawas helpingClarke on hisputting. Or Un-conscious Putting as the golf psy-chologist described it. As Darrenputted beautifully under pressure onDay Four, the strategy was very suc-cessful. But what is UnconsciousPutting? And more importantly, howdo you do it?

Well the key to Unconscious Puttingis having a clear picture of the imageor outcome that you want. Then'letting go' and trusting your naturalskills to deliver that outcome. Soundssimple doesn't it! It means having nofear of failure; no concerns aboutmissing; no thoughts abouttechnique;  a clear unclutteredmind. Simply seeing the putt. Thenhitting it. That’s it!

It requires practice. Especially in thewhite heat of competition. To leadthe Open Championship and playthis way, takes a great deal of trust inyour putting touch. But in reality an-yone can do it. It doesn’t takestrength, power or force. Merely theability to let go of pre-conceived out-comes and simply 'see it and hit it'.And of course, deal with the conse-quences of missing.

It's the essence of putting. And thekey to success all over the course.

The Sports BlogBy Kenny Franks

Well known for his journalism aboutthe environment and his book Six De-grees, which details what will happenas global temperature creeps up andwhat we need to do to stop the rise,Mark Lynas changes his opinion onthe best way to stop the temperatureincrease in The God Species. Whatgrabs headlines is that, like otherprominent environmental campaign-ers, Lynas is now pro-nuclear andalso pro-GM. Lynas maintains thatthese technologies, along with syn-thetic biology, are key to‘consciously managing the planet, byfar the most important effort ever un-dertaken by humankind’.

What is much harder to grab in aheadline is the planetary boundariesconcept that has moved Lynas towardthis position. The concept of plane-tary boundaries has been pioneeredby a group of internationally respect-ed scientists brought together by thedirector of the Stockholm ResilienceCentre, Professor Johan Rockström,to determine what Earth systems are‘being most affected by humans, andwhat the implied limits to human ac-tivities might be in these areas’. Iden-tifying these boundaries now enablesthe identification of areas of plane-tary action, which can be ‘the organ-ising basis for a new kind ofenvironmental movement’, one that

recognisesthat‘Natureno longerruns theEarth. Wedo. It isour choicewhat hap-pens from

here.’As always, Lynas’ writing is clearand easy to follow, although manywill take issue with his message. However, as the nine planetaryboundaries are likely to influence en-vironmental debate and action in thefuture, The God Species is an impor-

tant book to read for anyone interest-ed in the long-term future of ourspecies and in preventing planet-wideclimate catastrophe.

The God Species is available fromSheelagh na Gig bookshop, Clough-jordan, which is open Wed-Thu10.30am-5pm, Fri 10.30am-6pm,Saturday 10am-6pm and Sunday1pm-6pm. Tel: 0505 42123; email,[email protected]; follow uson Twitter @sheelaghnagig; or see uson Facebook.

But back to endogenous depression. There are core symptoms of endogenousdepression and neurotic depression. Theunfortunate person who suffers from thispainful condition does not feel pleasurein normally pleasurable experiences, and is either non-responsive or feels flatand has a low mood. These sufferers feelexcessive guilt, and may be constantlyeither agitated or lethargic. They be-come dull and lifeless. 17 non-specificsymptoms can be added to these coresymptoms. The sufferer may suffer ir-regular body rhythms (e.g. variations inblood pressure), may wake up early andbe unable to go back to sleep, or havedifficulty staying asleep, or find it hardto fall asleep. They may lose weight, have suicidal thoughts, suffer anxiety, have difficulty concentrating, and en-dure worry and intrusive thoughts. Theymay worry excessively about theirhealth and imagine they have variousdiseases. There is also the possibilitythat they will have self-pity, becomeirritable, be tearful, have low mood, orunstable mood, suffer fatigue and loseinterest in sexual activity. This is anindication of how hard life is for suchpeople and for their partners and spouses. The second type of depression in thiscategory is biological depression andhas been looked at under physical func-tioning.Most readers will have heard of PMS orpremenstrual syndrome, which is a stateof tension that some women endure pri-or to their monthly menstruation. Thiscan make life a misery for the suffererand for their partners. But a more severetype is PMDD or premenstrual dysphor-ic disorder which falls into the category‘depression not otherwise specified’.Unlike PMS, this is truly depressive, andis defined as containing (during mostmenstrual cycles in the last year) five ormore of the symptoms of depression. The symptoms appear during the lastweek of premenstruation (the lutealphase of the menstrual cycle which is aweek before menstruation begins). Itappears from research that PMDD has abiological basis distinct from major de-pression. There is not agreement thatPMDD should be classified as a mooddisorder, anxiety disorder, or a distinctform. But, NIMH, the U.S. NationalInstitute of Mental Health, (one of thebest internet sites for you to learn aboutdepression), with a $1.4 billion annualbudget, describes the symptoms of thisdepression as anxiety, irritability andmood swings the week before menstrua-tion, in such a way that it interferes withnormal functioning. Then there is minor depressive disorder. This includes at least 2 weeks of symp-toms but with less than the five requiredfor major depressive disorder. And,finally, to recurrent brief depression.

This type of depression refers to epi-sodes lasting 2 days to 2 weeks, butwhich happen at least once a month for12 months. One of the unfortunate things about anytype of depression is that it is generallya chronic and recurrent complaint. Therisk for recurrence progressively in-creases with each episode and decreaseswhen the period of recovery is longer.Recurrence varies with each individual, with some people having isolated recur-rence separated by many years, whileothers experience clusters of major de-pression bouts happening closely to-gether. Some people find that thedepression occurs more frequently asthey grow older. Double Depression(major depression superimposed on dys-thymia) increases the risk of getting an-other episode of major depression. But,I have a feeling that if the main roots ofdepression are discovered and exploredin therapy the chance of recurrence isdecreased. There are various mediators that maypredict recurrent episodes of depression. One is gender difference, but there arealso psychosocial factors such as stress-ful life events, personality and cognitive(related to thinking) vulnerabilities, andpoor social support. There is a close linkbetween depression and stress irrespec-tive of gender, although what is stressfulto one person, may not be so to another.Ongoing stress is likely to lead to de-pression, and stress and depression canbe a vicious circle insofar as stressfulevents may lead to depression whichmay in turn increase stress. This canhappen in family relationships.
