TIPPERARY’S most successfulentrepreneurs, start-up businessowners and support agency repre-sentatives are all being encouragedto play their part in attracting over-seas companies to the county andearn up to €1,500 per job rewardsthrough a new initiative which isedging ever closer to its first 1,000jobs for Ireland tally.

ConnectIreland has worked withIrish people all over the globe tobring close to 20 overseas firms toIreland over the past two years. NowTipperary’s most enterprising busi-ness people attending the imminent‘Who To Talk To’ event are beingencouraged to play their part inbringing jobs to the region.

Tipperary is ideally positioned toattract foreign direct investment, ac-cording to ConnectIreland’s JamesSteele who will deliver a series ofshort presentations at the one dayevent at LIT Thurles on September10.

“Overseas companies locating inIreland want a skilled workforce;they want an accessible location andthey want a quality of life for theirstaff. Tipperary ticks all the boxes,”Steele said.

Kieran thenmoved to the USA for a number ofyears where he continued playing hurl-ing in New York. On his return to Ire-land, Kieran was part of the TipperarySenior Football panel for the 2013 Mc-Grath Cup, appearing as a substitute forTipperary in their defeat of Cork beforejoining the Tipperary Senior Hurlingpanel in April. Kieran made his compet-itive debut at senior for Tipperary in the2013 Allianz Hurling League Finalagainst Kilkenny, lining out at wing-back. Kieran made his Championshipdebut at wing-back vs. Limerick in the2013 Munster Senior Hurling Champi-onship.

Kieran’s brother Niall won an All-Ire-land Minor Hurling medal in 2006 atwing-forward while Kieran’s unclesLiam and Jack both captained the Tip-perary Senior Hurlers in 1983 and 1985

Darragh was born onFebruary 5th 1986 and plays for theKildangan club. He won a Munster

minor medal as a goalkeeper in 2003and a Munster Under 21 medal at full-forward in 2006. Darragh has also wona Munster and All-Ireland IntermediateClub hurling medal with his club in2004 in addition to North and CountyIntermediate medals in the same year,all won while playing corner-forward.

Darragh is also an accomplished foot-baller and played with the TipperaryMinor Footballers in 2004 as well asbeing selected on the Irish Compro-mise Rules U-18 team which touredAustralia in 2004. Darragh made hiscompetitive debut with the TipperarySenior hurlers in February 2005 whenhe lined out at full-forward in the Alli-anz Hurling League vs. Down, scoring1-1. He scored 1-1 as a substituteagainst Limerick in the 2005 AllianzHurling League before going on tomake his Championship debut as asubstitute versus Limerick in the 2005Munster Championship drawn game.

Darragh won an Allianz HurlingLeague medal as a substitute in 2008and also won Munster Senior HurlingChampionship medals in 2008 and2009. Darragh was a member of theTipperary panel that won the 2010 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship.

Eoin, who was bornon January 6, 1982, plays for the Mull-inahone club. Eoin made his Seniorchampionship debut vs. Galway in the2000 All-Ireland Quarter-Final as aforward substitute – he was also sub-goalie on that occasion if required.Eoin won an All-Ireland Collegesmedal with St. Kieran’s of Kilkenny in2000 and has 2 Munster Minor Hurlingmedals – 1997 and 1999 and 2 Mun-ster Under 21 medals in 1999 and2003 (as captain). Eoin has won 2 Alli-anz Hurling League medals, 5 MunsterSenior Hurling medals (2008 and 2011as captain) and 2 All-Ireland SeniorHurling medals (2001 and 2010 ascaptain). Eoin has played in goal forthe Tipp minors and Mullinahone inthe past but is better known as an ex-cellent forward, one of the best in themodern game. Eoin is a brother offormer All-Star Paul Kelly.

Eoin won a Railway Cup medal withMunster in 2001 and captained Mun-ster in the 2006 semi-final defeat toConnacht, scoring 1-6 in the process.Eoin won an All-Star award at corner-forward and also won the Eircell Vo-dafone Young Hurler of the Year. Patrickscored a goal against Clare in the 2009Waterford Crystal Cup Final. He madehis debut in the Allianz HurlingLeague in February 2009, lining out atcentre-forward against Waterford andscoring a point in a 2-13 to 1-12 Tip-perary victory. Patrick made his Cham-pionship debut at left half-forwardagainst Wexford in the 2010 All-Ire-land Senior Hurling ChampionshipQualifiers, scoring two points from

Conor was born on October 18th, 1984and plays for the Newport club. Hemade his competitive debut for the Tip-perary Senior Hurlers against Antrim inthe 2005 Allianz Hurling League.Conor won 2 Munster Minor Hurlingmedals in 2001 (at midfield) and 2002(at centre-forward). Conor helped Tip-perary to win the 2003 Munster U-21final by coming off the bench to scorea goal in extra time against Cork whilehe won his second Munster U-21 med-al at full-back in 2004 before also lin-ing out at full-back in the 2005Munster U-21 Final. He won Fitzgib-bon Cup medals with Limerick Insti-tute of Technology in 2005 (atcorner-back) and 2007 (at centre-back).Conor was nominated for an All-Star atcentre-back in 2007, 2008, 2009 and2011, winning an All-Star award in2008 at centre-back and in 2009 at lefthalf-back.

Conor won an Allianz Hurling Leaguemedal in 2008 at centre-back, scoring 9points from long range frees in thatAHL campaign. Conor won the RTEman of the match for his performanceat centre-back against Cork in the 2008

Women seem to suffer from it morethan men. It also seems to be moreprevalent with older age groups(who seem to need less sleep thanyounger adults). Lifestyle, environ-ment, personality and diet also deter-mine ‘normal’ sleep for us.Depression, psychotic problems (e.g.schizophrenia), asthma, some medi-cations, pain, alcohol or drug takingcan cause insomnia. Some peopleclaim that alcohol helps them tosleep. However, a new study carriedout in May 2011 debunks the ideathat alcohol promotes sleep. It is truethat it helps you to get to sleep morequickly, but then its effect wears offand it disrupts your sleep. The 2011study shows that sleep quality wasfar worse for those drinking alcoholthat for those taking a placebo (asubstance that has no therapeutic ef-fect, but is used as a control whentesting new drugs; in this case proba-bly a non-alcoholic lager). The studyalso showed that alcohol had a morenegative effect on women than onmen. Their sleep was more disrupt-ed, and they woke more often andfor longer periods, probably becauseof sex difference in alcohol metabo-lism (breaking down the alcohol).Menopausal women are more se-verely affected.

Neurological diseases such a Parkin-son’s or Alzheimer’s may also be acause, although my mother, who suf-fered from Dementia, always sleptwell. Medical conditions can also bea common cause of sleeplessness.This in turn can trigger anxiety.Heart disease, for example, is seen asone cause. An overactive thyroidgland can also contribute to insom-nia. Painful complaints such as ar-thritis, rheumatism, osteoporosis andany type of chronic (long term) painor ache (especially back pain) canhinder a good night’s sleep. Menwho have prostate problems mayhave to get up four or five times dur-ing the night to go to the bathroom,but prostatic hyperplasia can be dealtwith through a medical procedure.Therefore, it is advisable to visityour GP for an examination to see if

your insomnia is caused by a medi-cal condition. Treating the medicalcondition will obviously help withthe insomnia.

However, many men, who do nothave prostate problems or any ofthese medical conditions, and women(who are blessed not to have a pros-tate) spend long periods of their liveswaking up three and four times anight. Others wake up very early inthe morning and are unable to go backto sleep. But, as the definition of in-somnia given earlier shows, the realpointer to insomnia is not in theamount of hours required for a goodsleep, but the fact that people whohave insomnia wake up feeling tiredand even exhausted, and find dailychores difficult. Generally, adults ofall ages need an average of eighthours sleep a night (it seems to varyfrom five to ten hours per night),children attending school about tenhours, and infants can sleep for six-teen hours a day. Basically, we needenough sleep to awake refreshed.This will be different from person toperson. Good quality adequate sleepis so important in our lives. We canput up with one night’s insomnia, buta series of nights without good quali-ty sleep can be unbearable, and cancause anxiety and worry.
