JokesBidding at a local auction was pro-ceeding furiously when the auction-eer suddenly announced, "Agentleman in this room has lost awallet containing €10,000. If it isreturned, he will pay a reward of€2,000."There was a moment's silence, andthen from the back of the room camethe cry, "Two thousand five hun-dred!"

Your dog's barking at the back door.Your spouse's barking at the front.Who do you let in?Well, it's your call, but the dog'll stopbarking when you let him in.

What do a hurricane, a tornado, a fireand a divorce have in common? They are four ways you can loseyour house!

An elderly woman goes to the doc-tor. She says, "Doctor, it's terrible, Ipass gas all the time. Fortunately, it'sodourless and silent, otherwise I'd bemortified. For example, I've passedgas ten times just since we've beentalking, but it's odourless and silentso you can't tell." The doctor givesher some green pills and tells her totake one a day and come back in aweek.

The woman comes back after takingthe pills for a week. She says, "Doc-tor, there's been a change but not forthe better. I still pass gas all the time, but while it's still silent, now itsmells terrible!"The doctor says, "Well, I'm glad wecleared up your sinus blockage. Nowwe'll have to work on your hearing."

A man and a friend are playing golfone day at their local golf course. One of the guys is about to chip ontothe green when he sees a long funer-al procession on the road next to thecourse. He stops in mid-swing, takesoff his golf cap, closes his eyes, andbows down in prayer. His friend says: “Wow, that is themost thoughtful and touching thing Ihave ever seen. You truly are a kindman.”The man then replies: “Yeah, wellwe were married 35 years.”

The little boy greeted his grandmoth-er with a hug and said, "I'm so happyto see you grandma. Now maybedaddy will do the trick he has beenpromising us."The grandmother was curious.

"What trick is that my dear?" sheasked. The little boy replied, "I heard daddytell mammy that he would climb thewalls if you came to visit us again."

A school teacher was discussing theTen Commandments with her fiveand six year olds. After explaining the commandmentto "honour" thy Father and thy Moth-er, she asked, "Is there a command-ment that teaches us how to treat ourbrothers and sisters?"Without missing a beat, one littleboy answered, "Thou shall not kill."

"I'm worried about you always beingat the bottom of your class," said thefather to his son."Don't worry Dad," he replied. "Theystill teach the same thing at bothends."

Tyre maintenance

Correct Inflation Pres-sureInflation pressure is im-portant, as the pressu-rised air inside your tyrehas to support theweight of your vehicleand its load. Tyre pres-sures may vary depend-ing on the vehicle modeland the load being car-ried.

We recommend that youcheck your tyre pres-sures regularly againstthe manufacturer’s spec-ifications for your vehi-cle (refer to your ownershandbook) at your localservice station.

Wheel Alignment & Balancing

You may hear the terms ‘wheel align-ment’ and ‘wheel balancing’ used in-terchangeably, but they are separateissues, both important in the upkeep ofyour tyres and vehicle.

Wheel alignment consists of adjustingthe angles of the wheels so that theyare perpendicular to the ground andparallel to each other. Aligning yourwheels can help maximise tyre life andensure that your vehicle drives straightand true when on level surfaces.

The symptoms of a misaligned wheelinclude:

Uneven or rapid tyre wear.Pulling or drifting away from astraight line.Drifting on a straight, level road.Spokes of the steering wheel tendingtoward one side while driving on astraight, level road.Wheel balancing allows the tyres andwheels to spin without causing anyvibrations. Your wheels’ balance is

gauged by checking for any heavyspots on the wheel-tyre combinationand compensating for such flaws byplacing a measured balancing weighton the opposite side of the wheel fromwhere the heavy spot is located.

The symptoms of a wheel that is out ofbalance include:

vibration in the steering wheel, seat orfloor-pan, usually at motorway speeds‘scalloped’ or ‘cupped’ wear patternon the tyres. If your tyres demonstrate any of thesymptoms outlined above, we advisethat you seek advice from your localauthorised tyre repair centre.

Tyre condition

Tyres displaying signs of deteriorationshould be removed and not used onthe road.

There are several signs of deterioratingtyres you should keep an eye out for:

cracking/crazing of the side wall of thetyre, caused by its flexing,

Tyre SafetyIf you’re heading off for a weekend break or a longer Summerholiday it’s important to ensure your tyres are in good shape.

Self-affirmations are positive state-ments or self-scripts that can condi-tion the subconscious mind to helpyou develop a more positive percep-tion of yourself. Affirmations canhelp you to change harmful behav-iours or accomplish goals, and theycan also help undo the damagecaused by negative scripts, thosethings which we repeatedly tell our-selves (or which others repeatedlytell us) that contribute to a negativeself-perception. Affirmations areeasy to create and use, but you'llneed dedication to make them work.

One difficult part is trying to re-member to repeat your affirmations.A way to get around this is to inte-grate your affirmations into your

passwords. For example if you wantto feel better about your life youcould change your email or Face-book login password to ‘lifeisgood’.To make your password more se-cure you can substitute numbers orsymbols for letters. Eg ‘l1f3isg00d’.Even if you find yourself checkingFacebook too often at work youcould change your password to‘doineedtologin’. By asking your-self the question you might realisethat, no, you don’t need to login. This simple little trick can dramati-cally help improve your life, wheth-er you want to lose weight, be abetter parent or whatever. Give it ago! You’ll be surprised at the re-sults.

An easy way to use positiveAffirmations to change your life

Why?Because it is through repetition that you establish

your credibility, establish brand familiarity andbecome the first thought when a need

for your type of product or service arises.

Repetition is an importantpart of Advertising

It’s that time of year. The sun is shining,we’re getting out the summer clothes andfeeling a little uncomfortable about our bod-ies after a long winter of comfort eating andsitting by the fire. Fear not, help is at handto get you in shape and feeling better aboutyourself.

Máire Harney and Annalouise Muldoonfrom the Department of Health, Sport andExercise Science at WIT offer some tips toincrease your physical activity levels, toneup and ultimately feel better in your sum-mer.

Get Active! The physical activity guidelinesrecommended that all adults do at least 30minutes per day of moderate to vigorousactivity on at least 5 days of the week for allthe health benefits that are associated withactivity. However, for weight loss, of 1-2lbs per week, it is recommended that youincrease this volume to 200-300 minutes ofmoderate to vigorous activity per week. This can include walking, running, swim-ming or any other aerobic activity that youenjoy. To work at least at a moderate inten-sity you should get a little sweaty and beslightly out of breath but you should still beable to chat to your exercise buddy! Alter-natively you can work at a vigorous intensi-ty where you get sweaty and can’t hold aconversation but can maintain the exercisefor at least 20 mins. The harder you work, the less time you need to work for!!

Why weight! There are lots of differenttypes of weight training. The good news isthat they don’t all result in increasing thesize of your muscles! There are so manybenefits to doing some form of resistancetraining; you can increase your bone density(to help avoid osteoporosis), you can in-crease your muscle tone which will makeyou stronger and look fitter, and you canalso increase your metabolism (which helpsyour body to burn more fat throughout theday). You don’t have to go to the gym to doweight training. Once you are using someform of resistance e.g. your body weight ordumbbells or full water bottles you canachieve your aim. There are lots of appsand programmes on social media siteswhich will guide you on programmes tohelp tone the main areas of the body. Totone your muscle, you should do roughly15-25 repetitions of each exercise. Build upthe repetitions as you are able. Remember, the key with all types of exercise is that if itfeels comfortable, you need to change

something to make it a little harder to keepgetting benefits.

Get started and set some goals! To help youachieve the most benefits from your efforts, think about what you want to achieve andfollow these simple steps to set yourselfsome exercise goals:

S pecific You have a much betterchance of achieving the goal if you are veryspecific on what your goal is. E.g. A gener-al goal would be to get in shape but a specif-ic goal would be to plan to be active 5 daysa week.

M easureable Make sure you can measureyour progress toward the achievement ofeach goal you set. E.g. that you will buildfrom 10 squats to 100 squats in 4 weeks.

A ttainable Identify the goals that aremost important to you and figure out waysyou can achieve them by planning the stepsyou need to take and establish a time framethat allows you to carry out those steps. E.g.to build to 100 squats in 4 weeks, add 20extra squats each week.

R ealistic Your goal must be some-thing you are willing and able to work to-wards. E.g. from couch to 5k, walking orrunning programme in 2 months, rather thana couch to marathon in two months!!

T imely Goals should be set with-in a time frame. If there is no set time framethen there will be no sense of urgency. Ifyou want to lose 10 lbs, when do you wantto lose it by?

The hardest part of any new exercise pro-gramme is getting started so don’t put it offany longer, set some goals and get activetoday.

Do you think YOU might like to learn howto prescribe exercise and teach exerciseclasses for other people? Then contact An-nalouise Muldoon or Máire Harney at WITFitness School, part of the Department ofHealth, Sport and Exercise Science in WIT,at [email protected] for information onour short, part-time courses on Fitness In-struction and Group Fitness Instructionwhich are starting next October in WIT.These courses meet the standards requiredby REPS Ireland. More information is avail-able at www.wit.ie/parttime.

Sinker By Jason Johnson

Sinker catapults readers into the life oflaw dropout Baker Forley as he signsup for the world’s most controversialand deadly sport, professional drink-ing. If he plays it right, wins somegames and gets out early enough, hemight just escape with money, self-respect and at least some of his health.

Sponsored by a struggling singles barback in Derry, Baker and his licentiousAmerican coach Ratface head to sun-baked Mallorca for the infamous Bull-fight boozing battle. As protests rageover the rights andwrongs of the reviled sport, he takeshis seat alongside some of its mostcolourful combatants.

But the heat plays havoc with the gin-ger Irishman’s game and a drunkenglance at a mysterious Arabianbeauty earns a decisive punch fromher bodyguard. Her husband, a beer-

swillingSaudi oilbaron, in-vitesBaker andRatface to his extraordinary, Gaudi-designed home to make amends – andmakes a cash offerthey can’t refuse.

As illicit lust flares in the boiling heat,Baker soon learns the real reason he’sthere – he’s about to beframed for murder. After days of in-dustrial-level drinking - and dealingwith Ratface’s random groping -can he break free?

Inspired by the power and complexityof addiction, Sinker is a thrilling, ir-reverent yet often joyful take on ahopeless but changing male drinkingculture.

Water is a hot topic in Ireland in 2014 and one that weare going to hear more about in the future. With watermetering on the way, many Irish householders arelooking for more information about how to make sav-ings on water use as well as how to reduce waste.Cloughjordan Ecovillage is hosting an EcoLearn daycalled “Rainwater Harvesting: Is It Worth It? on Sat-urday 26 July from 11am to 5pm to share first-handknowledge and experiences of Rainwater Harvesting.

What can rainwater be used for and how does Rain-water Harvesting work? What are the benefits andwhen does it not make sense? What are the optionsand how much does it cost? This EcoLearn day inCloughjordan Ecovillage opens the doors to a demon-stration of Rainwater Harvesting in action and offersan opportunity for householders to figure out if theinvestment in a Rainwater Harvesting system is worthit.

Irish water supplies are under stress due to increasingindividual consumption, changes to rainfall patternscaused by climate change, and because of populationgrowth. Samuel Taylor Coleridge could have beenright when he said “Water, water everywhere, nor anydrop to drink”! In Ireland the average person usesabout 150 litres per day, but domestic water usagecould be reduced by 50-70% with modest rainwaterstorage capacity.

The day will be conducted in an interactive way com-bining input with active participation and sharing. It isopen to anyone who is interested in the issues beingexamined and does not require any prior level ofknowledge. However participants who have previous-ly used rainwater harvesting will be invited to sharetheir experiences.

The EcoLearn Day begins at 11:00am and runs to5pm, allowing people travel by train from Dublin areaand return on the same day. For those who wish tostay over, an optional Sunday morning outdoorMeitheal is planned.

Hosted by Cloughjordan Ecovillage as part of itsEcoLearn programmeDate: 11am-5pm Saturday 26 JulyLocation: Cloughjordan EcovillageCost: €40 before July 19, €50 from July 20, €10 dis-count if you travel by train.Accommodation: available in Django’s Hostelwww.djangos.ieEnquiries: [email protected] booking: www.thevillage.ie

How to Enhance Performance-Pre , Mid and

Post Season by Premier County Physiotherapy Tem-plemore and Thurles.

This is a question we are continually asked in bothour Chartered Physiotherapy Clinics. In most cases thetiming of this question is unfortunate as the Player /Athlete is attending us with an established injury thatmay have been avoided if they had been properlyScreened. These injuries obviously affect Performance,as there may be a residual unresolved Mobility prob-lem or Motor Control issue post injury. This may notbe overly obvious and the Sportsperson may feel theyare now non-injured and can go " Full - Pelter " , butan injury can leave that person with a hidden dysfunc-tion in their Playing style or Technique which will ulti-mately affect Future Performance and may even leadto another injury. There are also individuals who may

never have had a significant injurybut their Performance may be af-fected on an ongoing basis by anunscreened and therefore unex-posed Movement Pattern Asym-metry. These Individuals arecarrying hidden issues that arefrustrating them by " Holding

Them Back " and negatively affecting what could bea much better Performance.

So What Is The Answer ? Well if Performance is being affected by a Muscular,Mobility or Motor Control problem , Performance canbe enhanced simply by Diagnosing , Exposing andCorrecting what is exposed. There are many CharteredPhysiotherapists who have trained and specialised inScreening , testing and Correcting these previouslyundiagnosed Dysfunctions in Players / Athletes . We atPremier County Physiotherapy, use FMS - FunctionalMovement Screening and SFMA - Selective Function-al Movement screening to expose all these issues. we

then use Proven and Effective Corrective FunctionalStategies to negate the exposed Patterns. Sometimeswe complement these Corrective Strategies by intro-ducing Yoga and Pilates Regimes when appropriate .Ultimately , Our Objective is to Correct and achievehigher better results when we Re-Screen , which inturn translates into significant improvements in Per-formance for the Player/Athlete. We Screen Pre , Mid and Post Season and Ourgoal at all times is to Eliminate Undiagnosed Issuesand Enhance Optimum Performance.

The Advice is " Do Not Add Fitness To A Dysfunc-tion "- Get Screened and Improve Your Performance!!!!!!

To be Screened please contact Jackie or Maggie atPremier County Physiotherapy , Templemore orThurles on 0504-26090 and ask for FMS or SFMAScreening.

Anxiety. How to touch your inner child(contd.). Sleeplessness as a contributorto anxiety.

There are several techniques for touchingthe inner child. One useful book to helpyou understand this concept is Recoveryof Your Inner Child by Lucia Capachione.Lucia is an art therapist and explains verywell what the inner child means. There aremany exercises in the book. These aremainly written dialogues between theadult and the child. They are very simple, and I use them on myself sometimes. Theadult writes in his or her dominant handand the child replies in his or her non-dominant hand, resulting in childish scrib-ble. These can be very powerful. If theadult (inner parent) is loving, the child, perhaps for the first time, hears wordssuch as ‘I love you. I will take care ofyou’. It is best to do this exercise in acounselling session, because we do notknow what will arise.

Another technique is to write a letter tothe inner child, and the child replies. Ialways ask people to draw the child’s faceas they see it. If the angry child emerges, allow it to express its anger, empathisewith it, love it, and find out the object ofthe child’s anger.

Edmund Bourne has a nice visualisationas a technique for touching your innerchild (pages 282-283). Getting to knowyour inner child, talking to him or her asoften as possible is very healing, especial-ly for adults who have been abused aschildren. When doing these exercises it isalways important to note how your bodyis reacting. If your stomach begins to turn, your head begins to ache, or your chesttightens, it is a sign that the exercises arenot safe. In such circumstances, a coun-sellor’s room would be preferable to do-ing it on your own. One of the roles of thecounsellor is to keep his client safe.

Sleeplessness as a contributor to anxie-ty.

Sleep is the time we give our bodies torest, and during that time we go throughdifferent stages – drowsiness, light sleep, deep sleep, dreaming (rapid eye move-ment REM sleep). Deep sleep comes ear-lier in the night and is crucial to feelingrefreshed next day and to our sense ofwell-being. REM sleep allows us to proc-ess stuff that has not been adequatelydealt with the previous day.

If sleeping soundly is so vital to our senseof well being, it is no wonder that sleep-lessness can cause of anxiety. It is a vi-

cious cycle, too, because anxiety itself cancause sleeplessness. Of all the wide-rang-ing causes of anxiety insomnia is a verywidespread problem. It is reckoned thatfrom 30% to 50% of people may sufferfrom it at one time or another, and about10% of people suffer chronic (ongoing)insomnia.

Insomnia is defined by the English NHSas ‘difficulty getting to sleep or stayingasleep for long enough to feel refreshedthe next morning, even though you havehad enough opportunity to sleep’. Suffer-ers wake up periodically during the night,or wake up early in the morning and areunable to go back to sleep. They feel tiredand irritable throughout the day. This canbe damaging to relationships at home andoutside.

Sleep experts tell us that there are threetypes of insomnia – learned, chronic andprimary. Learned insomnia (Psycho Phys-iological Insomnia –PPI) is simply insom-nia that arouses our anxiety. In otherwords, if we sleep badly we may begin toworry about not being able to functionduring the day, and we may try harder tosleep at night thus making our insomniaworse. if we continue worrying aboutsleeping we may become over arousedabout sleeping, and, for example, normalbedroom activities such as making thebed, changing the bedclothes, putting onour pyjamas, turning off the light, and soon, can trigger insomnia. In short, learnedinsomnia associates the bedroom withsleeplessness rather than sleep. This isreal anxiety-arousing insomnia, and is avicious circle. Chronic insomnia is ongo-ing insomnia, and primary insomnia isinsomnia that is not caused by any physi-cal or mental condition.
