Relay for Life Tipperary, held inToomevara at the end of August hasexceeded the €100k mark for the thirdyear in a row. At the official chequehandover held last Friday evening inthe Tipperary Inn, Toomevara, thefinal amount from this year’s Relaywas announced as €104,306-29. Re-ceiving the cheque on behalf of theIrish Cancer Society, Kathleen OMeara, Director of Advocacy with thesociety, thanked all who contributedto such a remarkable outcome, addingthat the Tipperary Relay is one of themost successful and well organised inthe country and has contributed€359,000 to the fight against cancer inthe past three years. She compliment-ed the committee for their work dur-ing the past three years, adding “youare the happiest hardworking commit-tee I have ever met”. Pointing out thatthe Irish Cancer Society is not a statefunded organisation, she said thatfunds from Relay were used to pro-vide a range of services to cancer suf-ferers in Co Tipperary, includingcancer information services, the nightnursing service, daffodil centres thefinancial support programme to thosesuffering from cancer, the survivorssupporting survivors programme andthe advocacy service. All these, as

well as supporting research to findcures and better treatments for thosewith the disease, are a significant con-tribution to the fight against cancer.Finally, she said that the venue anddates for next year’s Relay for LifeTipperary would be announced in duecourse, and hoped that those who par-ticipated in past years would continueto do so in the future.

Speaking on behalf of the Relay Com-mittee, Padraig Moran thanked all theteams who took part for their effortsand commitment and also for theirspirit and ingenuity. He said thatwithout the teams there would be noRelay for Life, adding that their con-tribution was much greater than themoney they raised. Both he and JerryCronin, Committee Chairman,thanked Toomevara people in generaland the GAA club in particular, forembracing Relay so completely duringthe past three years, and for giving itsuch total support. In conclusion, Jer-ry added that Relay for Life Tipperaryhad really just begun and will nowspread its wings and go ahead fromstrength to strength in various venuesthroughout the county. Keep an eyeout for the announcement of the venuefor next year’s Relay.

Series 4, no. 16. Anxiety. Deepbreathing, negative thinking anddesensitisationDeep breathing is one of the basicand best ways to ease and manageanxiety (and panic attacks). It takesabout 3 weeks to learn how to deepbreathe. It means breathing throughthe stomach (abdomen) rather thanthrough the chest. When this is mas-tered and you breathe through yourstomach your shoulders will notmove, but your belly and stomachwill expand and contract as youbreathe. It is advisable not to spendmore than 2 minutes at a time deepbreathing, because you take in moreoxygen this way, and can becomedizzy if you do too much of it at atime. Therefore, it is best to spend ashort time 5 or 6 times a day doingit.There are several ways to learn howto deep breathe. The classical way isto sit straight in a chair, put yourhand on your stomach and as youbreathe in your stomach will expand,and as you breathe out your stomachwill contract. Having breathed in,you hold your breath for a second ortwo before breathing out. Some rec-ommend putting a book on yourstomach, and using your stomach topush it out. This can be difficult inthe first few days, but as you practiseyou will notice your stomach ex-tending more as time goes by. Longago, I learned to deep breathe in arather unusual, but effective way. Ispent some time in the Jesuit order,and we learned deep breathing tohelp us when giving sermons. Themethod was to go down on all foursand pant like a dog! There was nogreat effort in this, because you haveto deep breathe when in that posture.It might look strange, but it works,and eventually deep breathing be-comes habitual.While deep or abdominal breathingin itself is a big help in easing anx-ious feelings, it can be used to relaxthe entire body. If you refer back toan earlier article, you will see how Iincorporated deep breathing into thevisualisation of the wise being. Ourbreath is like our spirit. Feel it gentlycoursing through your body. It willalso help you to empty your mindand quieten your thoughts. This pre-vents rumination, one of the roots ofdepression and anxiety. Anothertechnique is to pick a ‘relaxing’word such as ‘peace’, ‘gentle’ and soon and repeat it as you relax eachpart of your body.

Since anxiety may come from dis-torted, negative or illogical thinking,training ourselves to think positivelyis the best possible way forward.This is not as difficult as one mightthink, although pessimistic thoughtsare deep rooted, and a pessimisticthought has a greater impact than apositive one. Therefore, anxiouspeople must constantly practise pos-itive thinking until a new pathway islaid down in the brain. In practise,this means substituting positivethoughts for negative ones. For ex-ample, the phone rings, and the anx-ious person immediately thinks ‘badnews’. Constantly replacing thiswith the thinking ‘good news’ willhelp to reconfigure our negative wir-ing of the brain. This will take sometime to achieve.Since extreme anxiety means that aperson has become acutely sensi-tised, one of the most common pro-cedures is to desensitise the sufferer,by gradually exposing him to theanxiety-provoking situation. Desen-sitisation is a technique of cognitivebehavioural therapy, and involvesbecoming familiar with the situationthat arouses the anxiety. It meanssteeling yourself to feel the disagree-able and severe sensations and grad-ually getting used to them, all thetime slowly extending the limits ofexposure to the fear arousing eventor place. This requires courage. Whowants to experience the painful sen-sations associated with anxiety?
