These brave volunteers (picturedbelow) offered their precious headsto the shave or dye challenge all inaid of a worthwhile fundraiser forThe Irish Cancer Society.
The students and staff at Templem-ore College were delighted whenPaddy Reidy – CE Supervisor ap-proached the college and asked for
their help with shaving, dying andtransforming over twenty of hismembers heads for this worthwhilecause.
These brave volunteers work ascaretakers, general maintenance op-eratives, environmental workers,administrators and grounds keepersunder the Community EmploymentScheme and have been collectingsponsorship for their shave or dyechallenge for the past number ofweeks. € 3753 was raised for theIrish Cancer Society. Well done toPaddy and all the team!

Celestial Green Ventures, an envi-ronmental conservation companybased in Ireland, is pleased to an-nounce the launch of their SocialFunding Programme, aimed at help-ing small projects and start-ups allover the Republic of Ireland make adifference in their communities. Al-though their primary concern is theprotection of the Amazon and sus-tainable development for the localcommunities there, the work carriedout by Celestial Green Ventures inBrazil has served to reinforce theimportance of local programmes intackling major issues. It is for thisreason that they have decided to of-fer financial support to 4 separateprojects, to the tune of €5,000 each.
All charities, not-for-profit, andcommunity based organisations thatare registered in the Republic of Ire-land are eligible to apply for fundingthrough the programme. Given theircorporate objectives, they are partic-ularly interested in assisting projectsthat have a strong social & environ-mental purpose, although applica-tions are welcomed from all projecttypes. Ultimately however, the pro-gramme is looking for creative, tal-ented, and driven individuals with aninnovative & unique solution toproblems faced by people or com-munities in Ireland.
Applications
Those hoping to benefit from thesupport of the Social Funding Pro-gramme can make an application upto and including the 16th of May2014. Applicants can submit as
many entries as they like, but cannotbe awarded support for more thanone.
The application process itself shouldhold no surprises: applicants are re-quired to provide a short descriptionof their proposal, along with projectgoal’s, plans, reasons to select theirproject, a complete breakdown ofestimated costs, and any other sup-porting information.
The winners will be selected by apanel composed of Celestial GreenVentures employees and guest judgeNoel Griffin, former CEO of the IS-PCA. The review period will takeplace over the two weeks followingthe closing date for applications,with the successful applicants beingannounced on the 30th of May.Funds will then be awarded on the6th of June 2014.

Originally organised anumber of years ago by New-port resident Cathal O’Tooleas nothing more than a casualmeeting of like minded vin-tage VW enthusiasts from avintage VW club calledEircooled.com, Jumpstart, asit is now known has growninto quite the event.Spurred on by the success ofthe 2013 event the decisionwas made to step it up so to speak andthe car park previously used in Lim-erick was not going to cut it anymore.As Cathal says the decision to moveto Loughmore was a simple one; “Ihave friends living in and close toLoughmore so I had seen how pictur-esque the village is, I’ve experiencedthe high quality food served in TheCottage and the support the locals putinto everything held in their village soit was simple really”.The decision was made all that mucheasier when Thurles based CM Signsoffered to sponsor the event. Forthose that don’t know CM Signs, it isowned by VW nuts Brian Maher andGraham Cullen so for them, this part-nership made perfect sense.With the confirmation of the eventonly happening at the end of January,the pressure was on to get everythingin place. Prizes were sourced for thegoodie bags which were given out tothose that arrived early on the day. It
should be noted that there was no en-try fee for this event, it was 100%free so with the value of each goodiebag ranging from € 10 to €40 depend-ing on their content this makes thisevent one of the most unique outthere. Added to the impressive list of‘goodies’ were the prizes on offer forvarious classes. Owners drove awaywith a staggering €1,000 worth ofprizes which included magazine sub-scriptions, vouchers for VW special-ists, car accessories and car partswhile the Car of the Show winner re-ceived a gorgeous hand crafted woodand metal trophy. Tipperary Green Business Networkhave launched a Poster Competitionfor Primary Schools in Tipperary.The competition, which has beenfunded by North and South TipperaryCounty Councils, under LA21 LocalAgenda Grant 2013, aims to getchildren thinking about greenbusiness. The theme of the poster is‘How could you make a businessgreen?’ and all Primary Schools inTipperary are eligible to enter.
The launch was attended by a numberof businesses from Tipperary GreenBusinesses Network, representativesfrom North and South Tipperary Co.Councils (Deirdre Cox & MaryCarroll) and children from nearbyScoil Ailbhe who were accompaniedby a teacher from the school, SiobhanPower as well as the manager of theThurles Chamber Enterprise Centre,John Kennedy.
In welcoming the assembled guests,the Chairman of TGBN, PatrickLambe, said that it was never tooearly to get children thinking aboutgreen business, noting that ‘thesechildren were the entrepreneurs ofthe future’. Deirdre Cox,Environment Awareness Officer withNorth Tipperary Co. Council saidthat the competition was a greatopportunity for teachers to engagetheir students in thinking aboutquestions relating to green businessand agreed that it was never too earlyto get children involved in thinking
about how businesses could go green.She added that in her experience, ‘it’sthe children who teach the adults –children are very informed on greenissues’.

What is FMS and SFMA? FunctionalMovement Screen and Selective Func-tional Movement Assessment are basedon an exercise philosophy and corre-sponding set of resources which hasresulted from sound science, years ofinnovation and current research. Thesemovement screens ultimately result inexposing a previously undiagnoseddysfunction in a players/athletes move-ment pattern that could be affectingperformance or be setting up that indi-vidual for injury or recurrent injury.Once the dysfunctional pattern is deter-mined, we at Premier Clinic are trainedto implement strategies based on cor-rective functional movement and selec-tive functional movement principles tonegate the dysfunctional movementthat the individual displays. The cor-rective strategies will involve very spe-cific exercises which will maximisebrain re-training regarding movementrecruitment and muscular interplay.Ultimately these corrective strategiestarget the exposed problem and willeffectively restore proper movementpatterns for that person, resulting inimproved performance and a reductionin injuries.

North Tipperary Hospice Movement’sFire Walk Fundraiser
On Saturday night 6th April, the rainsubsided for a unique event where 38brave adrenaline seekers walked barefoot over 20 feet of hot coals. Friendsand family and supporters were therecheering them on to achieve the im-possible and walk on fire. To say thatthe atmosphere at the Abbey CourtHotel was ‘fiery’ is a complete un-derstatement. The car park which wasliterally on fire, was the chosen venuefor the North Tipperary HospiceMovement’s Fire Walk Fundraiser -“Firing It Up In North Tipperary -Anything Is Possible”!
Master Firewalker Brian Moore ofPeak Potential conducted a two hourseminar to all 38 participants prior tothe walk in order get them in the‘mind over matter’ way of thinking -channelling their energy and over-coming their fears. Outside, DrumDance Ireland were playing bongosand drums to entertain supporters
whilst the fire was burning, creatingan electric atmosphere before thebrave firewalkers came out.
At 9.30 the Firewalkers came outcharged up and ready to go, one byone the volunteers daringly walkedacross the burning coals. Mid-waythrough, the coals were topped upbefore non-other than ‘Feet ofFlames’ Irish dancing star BernadetteFlynn walked across! Chief Fire Of-ficer Dave Carroll was the final walk-er of the night; he thankfully didn’tneed to call on his Firefighter col-leagues to quench his feet!
The North Tipperary Hospice Move-ment is delighted that their Firewalkevent has so far raised almost €8000,which was pledged in sponsorship onthe night. The event has been hailed agreat success by the Kay O Dono-ghue of the North Tipperary Hospice.

Martha Davis has an excellent beliefsinventory outlining 50 irrational ideas thatare connected to negative self-talk. Youhave to score on each of these under theheadings one. 1. Somewhat agree. 2. Agree.3. Disagree. Some of the irrational ideas shelists are ‘it is important to me that othersapprove of me’, ‘I hate to fail at anything’,‘when I don’t get what I want, I get mad’, ‘Ifind it hard to go against what others think’,‘it upsets me a lot when I make mistakes’, Iworry a lot about what people think aboutme’. Martha then takes each of these 50irrational ideas and tests them for their valid-ity. She offers a realistic appraisal of someof these. To carry such irrational thoughts isa great burden and will spoil your happiness.I would recommend that you borrow thisbook and photocopy this inventory. It willgive you a very accurate idea of your nega-tive beliefs.Chapter 3 of Bourne’s workbook gives anoverview of a recovery approach, exploringthe physical, emotional, behavioural, men-tal, interpersonal, whole self, and existen-tial-spiritual aspects. Many of these areexplored in these articles, but the book ismore comprehensive. Like Martha Davis’sbook, it also outlines relaxation techniques.We are motivated to practise these tech-niques because he shows with clarity howbeneficial they are in reducing anxiety.These exercises, for example, result is adecrease in our heart and breathing rate,lowers our blood pressure, reduces our bodytension and oxygen consumption, slows ourrumination, and increases our alpha waveactivity in our brain. Alpha Brain Waves area sign of relaxed activity in your brain. Al-pha brainwaves are defined as between thefrequency 8 Hz – 12 Hz, and are the domi-nant brain wave activity when your bodyand mind are relaxed. If you have ever feltrelaxed after meditation or yoga, you haveexperienced alpha brain waves. The morestressful beta brain waves are the opposite ofalpha brain activity.
Series 4, no. 20. Anxiety. Appropriateintimate relationships lessen anxiety. Theinner child and the emotional re-experi-encing of childhood.In the context of anxiety, Bourne has aninteresting section on support in our intimaterelationships, which helps to fight anxiety.He looks at 10 facets of an intimate relation-ship, which are interesting. These rangefrom having common interests to commonvalues, such as friendships, education, reli-gion, finances, sex health and so on. Hestresses the need for a sense of romance inthe relationship and the ability to keep thisalive throughout the years. There must alsobe compatibility between relative needs forbeing together and having one’s own space.If there is a mismatch between these, therelationship will not meet individual needs.In other words if one partner needs a lot ofindividual space and the other needs a lot oftogetherness, the result will be disharmonyand intimacy is damaged. This will add tostress levels, especially in the partner whovalues togetherness. An intimate relation-ship also involves support for each other’sgrowth, and willingness by both to nurtureand support each other in growing andchanging. This involves a high level of self-esteem, tolerance, and the absence of a senseof control.Love is in the eye of the beholder, the sayinggoes. So in the initial stages of a relationship
partners tend to idealise each other. As therelationship progresses their individual im-perfections and shortcomings begin to berecognised. Intimacy involves accepting andtolerating these flaws and imperfections.This more realistic view should be accompa-nied by affection, warmth and friendlinessexpressed in words and behaviours such ashugging and cuddling, and sharing of feel-ings. The ability to share feelings (beingvulnerable) is a key ingredient to a goodintimate relationship and involves goodcommunication, whereby partners listen toeach other, hear what is being said and areempathic to each other. All of these charac-teristics of a good intimate relationshipshould be cemented by strong mutual trust,which is built up over time.I have great respect for the anxiety-bustingtechniques mentioned throughout this series,but my overall conclusion is that an emo-tional re-experiencing of childhood stuffhas a more lasting effect than any other. Thatis a big statement, and one likely to be chal-lenged. Yet, again and again I have seenself-esteem grow and fears and anxietiesvanish when a sufferer is able to travel theemotional road. This is not always easy,because it involves touching the inner child,and not everyone can do it. Some do noteven understand what it means. But, it isextremely beneficial and healing to bring outand recognise our inner child, who may bean angry child, a lost child, a lonely child, ahappy child, a hurt child, a shamed child,and so on. We then become the loving innerparent, not the critical one or the protectiveone. Some people suffering from anxietynever reach that stage, and people whosefeelings are frozen cannot even understandthe concept of the inner child. I find workingon the inner child to be the most fruitful wayof dissipating anxiety.The inner child represents our emotions, andby seeing and loving the inner child we canrelease our emotions, and break the protec-tive shell that we have built as children.Freezing our emotions and creating the shellmay have been necessary to protect our-selves in an abusive environment as chil-dren. However, when we grow to adulthoodit is counterproductive. It is easy to see howfreezing our feelings and building this shellcan foster anxiety. Our tears are a symbol ofour feelings, and when we weep for the innerchild, our tears melt the ice and the shell andwe become whole and anxiety free.
