Data Informs Instruction

11

Like playtime, meals, and nurture, data in the early grades will transform a child’s educational journey.

Assessment is a Positive Practice

12

“Early childhood educators understand that child observation, documentation, and other forms of assessment are central to the practice of all early childhood professionals…

They understand that effective, evidence-based teaching is informed by thoughtful, ongoing systematic observation and documentation of each child’s learning progress, qualities, strengths, interests, and needs”

- NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators, 2019

Envision the benefit to your students...

13

if you could easily and effectively:

Collect accurate data to be used immediately

Gather data from families to paint a picture of the whole child across multiple settings

Plan interventions based on easily accessible data at your fingertips

Realize Your Vision

Given the uncertainties of school disruptions, it is now more important than ever for educators to have a reliable, multidimensional assessment tool and practice to support data driven instruction.

14

Data Driven Instruction

15

What Do You Assess?

16

Take 1 min to think about:What do you assess in your own life every day?

• Weight• Gas in car

What professionals do you rely on to use data?• Doctor• Grocer • Mechanic

Data Driven Instruction

17

The term "Data Driven Instruction" refers to when teachers use information collected from assessments, observations, children’s work samples, etc. to make informed decisions for adjusting instruction.

We encourage teachers to follow the data cycle as they consider the results of their screeners and plan for instruction using their screener's results.

Data Driven Instruction - Stop and Jot

18

Reflect on the data you find most meaningful to your practice:

• What does it look like?(i.e. work samples, observations, assessment data, family information, etc.)

• Why is it meaningful to you? (i.e. what does it tell you about this student?)

Data Driven Instruction

19

The data cycle is a helpful way to visualize how information (data) is collected, analyzed, interpreted, and implemented.

When we consider how to use data to drive instruction, it's best to use a cycle such as this one to guide our practices.

Data Driven Instruction

20

As you view the data cycle, note there are four stages within it:

• Stage 1: Collect data that measures student performance and/or mastery of objective(s)

• Stage 2: Analyze the data• Stage 3: Interpret the data to

inform instruction that supports student success

• Stage 4: Plan and Implement instruction that meets the needs of your students

Data Driven Instruction

21

As you can see, the data cycle is aniterative process, meaning that we go through it from beginning to end, over and over again.

We can move through the data cycle in a moment's time to make quick decisions or move through it slower as we pause and reflect on which steps should be taken next.

Data Driven Instruction (Let's Practice!)

22

Step 2: Identify what moment goes where within the blank data cycle diagram. Remember there are 4 parts to it:

1. Collect2. Analyze3. Interpret4. Plan and implement

Step 1: Consider a time when you used data to inform instruction using the data cycle.

Keep in mind, sometimes we may not even realize when we’re using the data cycle!

Information That Helps Teachers Help Students

31

An effective literacy screener provides real-time information that identifies student strengths and needs to inform instruction and close learning gaps.

TX-KEA Literacy Screener

The 5 to 7-minute screener will do the following :

• Will validly designate a student as On Track, Monitor, or Needs Support for Literacy

• Will generate a written report to send to parents

• Most importantly it will provide valid data that allows the teacher to inform instruction for all students.

Provide data to inform teacher planning so they can provide supplemental instruction and interventions to close gaps and support student success

Step by Step: After the Screener

78

All students:• Administer additional diagnostic assessment(s) in the BOY,

MOY, and EOY (Reading, Spelling, Oral Language, Math, Science, SEL, etc.) as required per local guidelines

• Collect formative data in all areas to create a picture of the Whole Child

• Analyze assessment data to create comprehensive picture of the child’s performance

• Provide evidence-based core instruction, strategic instruction, targeted intervention, and/or enrichment based on data

Data Driven Instruction

79

Data Sharing

80

Sharing Assessment Data

81

While collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and implementing are important parts of the data cycle, it's also vital that we share our findings.• take the time to document or

record our findings• consider which other people in

our students lives might benefit from receiving such important data

Sharing Assessment Data

82

Sharing student data is a lot like recipe sharing. Data is information that lists exactly what each student needs to be successful. It holds the ingredients, measurements, and instructions on how to support each student.

Therefore, it's important that we share our data or "recipes for success" with people who are of most importance to each student, such as families, administration, and other support staff.

Sharing Reports

83

Communicating with Families

84

“Teachers learn with and from families, recognizing and drawing on families’ expertise about their children for insight into curriculum, program development, and assessment.”

- NAEYC Professional Standards and Competencies for Early Childhood Educators, 2019

Communicating with Families

85

When communicating with families, it’s always best to be FRIENDS:

Friendly Realistic InquiringEmpathetic Negotiable Dependable Supportive

• Use a friendly tone• Set realistic expectations for you, the

family, and the child• Use your inquiry skills to remain

curious about what the family knows about their child

• Remain empathetic to their needs • Be negotiable when discussing

expectations • Use a dependable form of

communication that works for both of you

• Be supportive of all families and children

Case Study – Which Letter Included FRIENDS?

86

Dear Parent,Attached you will find the TX-KEA report for Jimmy. As you can see he scored below the cut off which means he is not Kindergarten ready. Unfortunately we’ll have to do a lot of catching up to close this child’s learning gaps. Please see me during after school hours so I can let you know how to support him.Signed,Teacher

Dear Parent,Attached you will find the TX-KEA screening results for Jimmy. Screening is one of many assessments we conduct during the beginning of the school year to get a sense of where each child is in their learning journey. Let’s set up a time to discuss the results so I can gain more information about Jimmy’s interests and home life and be of best support to you and your family.Signed,Teacher

ON TRACK:Students who are learning at an expected or greater than expected rate

MONITOR:Students who are approaching On Track

NEEDS SUPPORT:Students who are well below expectations and in need of intensive interventions

Understanding Benchmarks

90

Benchmarking in education occurs when measurable standards are set for learning. For example, benchmarks might be set for the concepts that must be mastered in each grade. They might also be used to see where a particular student, class, or even school ranks in comparison to others.Benchmarking in Education: Definition & Limitation | Study.com

Students in Kindergarten should be screened by the end of the school year. The following components should be included within the screener:

Phonological Awareness Phonemic Awareness Sound-Symbol Recognition Letter knowledge Decoding Skills Spelling Listening Comprehension

Per TEC §38.003, staff administering the dyslexia screener should be: trained on characteristics of dyslexia and reading disorders, trained on the administration of the screener and interpretation of results, and a classroom teacher who holds a valid certification for Kindergarten/Grade 1* OR certified/licensed in
