ALEXANDER ANOUNCESMOVE TO FLORIDA
After serving on the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club board of directors for the past 58 years, Jim Alexander has stepped down from the board. He recently announced his plans to permanently move to Florida with his wife June. Alexander is a long-time business leader who has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Boys & Girls Club during the past 6 decades. Inducted into the FSBGC Hall of Fame in 1993, Jim Alexander has served the Club in a number of capacities; board president, foundation trustee, nominating chair, capital campaign volunteer. One of his biggest accomplishments at the Club has been the establishment of the College Scholarship program. A graduate of Princeton University, Alexander has served on various foundations and boards, including: United Way, Sparks Regional Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, Public Library, University of Arkansas Fort Smith and the Evans Foundation.
“Lean On Me” mentoring participants enjoy parachute games during a hot dog cookout held at Creekmore Park. A celebration party for the mentoring program was held on May 21 & 22. Lean On Me coordinator Kari Fenby applauded all of the mentoring volunteers for their dedicated service.
$34,000 AWARDEDTHROUGH FSBGC COLLEGESCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
A record amount of funding was awarded to the 2008-2009 FSBGC College scholarship recipients. The program began in 1985 through the vision of Jim & June Alexander. Since that time, 221 Boys & Girls Club members have received funding for college. Rick Nagel, a former Boys & Girls Club Regional “Youth of the Year”, was guest speaker for the annual FSBGC college scholarship luncheon on June 16 at the Holiday Inn. Nagel is a partner with Acorn Growth Company in Oklahoma City. During his address, Nagel discussed his experiences of participating at the Club. After graduating from Southside High in 1991, he received a full scholarship to Oklahoma University through a partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Phillips 66. Today, Nagel is involved in acquisitions and mergers in the Aerospace & Defense industry. Nagel is also the treasurer for U.S. Congressman Tom Cole. “We are pleased with the generous donors who make these scholarships possible” said Birnie Harper, FSBGC College Scholarship committee chair. “The program continues to grow and the amounts of gifts have increased” he added. All new applicants are screened through an interview process with the scholarship committee. Three major factors are considered, including: 1) Boys & Girls Club Participation 2) Need 3) Academic Excellence. Applications for the next selection process become available in January. Scholarship forms are available at the FSBGC administrative office or the Club website at: www.fsbgc.org.
