He recently announced his plans to permanently move to Florida with his wife June. Alexander is a long-time business leader who has been instrumental in the growth and success of the Boys & Girls Club during the past 6 decades. Inducted into the FSBGC Hall of Fame in 1993, Jim Alexander has served the Club in a number of capacities; board president, foundation trustee, nominating chair, capital campaign volunteer. One of his biggest accomplishments at the Club has been the establishment of the College Scholarship program. A graduate of Princeton University, Alexander has served on various foundations and boards, including: United Way, Sparks Regional Hospital, Chamber of Commerce, Public Library, University of Arkansas Fort Smith and the Evans Foundation. “Lean On Me” mentoring participants enjoy parachute games during a hot dog cookout held at Creekmore Park. A celebration party for the mentoring program was held on May 21 & 22. EADY SELECTED FOR BOYS & GIRLS CLUB INTERNSHIP IN EUROPE

2006 Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year Alyse Eady is working in Germany & Turkey this summer as an intern for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Eady, who attends Ouachita Baptist University , was the local, state, and regional Boys & Girls Clubs Youth of the Year.

“It’s going to be a very exciting experience” said Eady, who has worked at the Jeffrey and Stephens units during the past two summers. “I’m anxious to learn about other cultures and meet new people” she added. Eady is majoring in Mass Communications. She hopes to become a spokesperson for a major corporation. Eady has served the national Boys & Girls Clubs

organization in a variety of ways: BGCA national conference entertainer, Hall of Fame presenter, master of ceremonies for major fund-raising events, etc. At the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club, she has been heavily involved with Power Hour, after-school learning program. Besides volunteering at the Jeffrey unit, Eady’s been involved with the Cheer Program. For the past two years, Eady has been a recipient of a Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club College Scholarship. As a national finalist for Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Eady has visited the White House, met actor Denzel Washington, appeared on the “Today Show” and was a guest speaker at a Congressional Breakfast in Washington, D.C.

Scholarship ProgramMaking Profound Impact Since the FSBGC Scholarship program was established by Jim & June Alexander in 1985, 470 awards have been granted. It is considered one of the largest College Scholarship programs for any Boys & Girls Club in the Southwest Region. Close to one half million dollars has been invested into the lives of Club members who have pursued their academic goals.

UNITED WAY ANNOUNCESNEW STAFF MEMBERS

Tom Minton has been named executive director of the Fort Smith Area United Way. He replaces Angela Tilley, who was with the organization for 12 years. Nikki Babb was hired on April 1 to become the marketing director. Babb replaces long-time United Way employee Linda Kaufenberg. The mission of the United Way is to improve lives by connecting people & resources. The Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club receives 27% of it’s annual income from the United Way and has been a United Way agency since 1928.

71ST KIWANIS SUMMER CAMPHELD AT DWIGHT MISSION

For the past 71 years, more than 10,000 boys have participated in the free summer camp hosted by the Kiwanis Camp. This year’s camp was held the fi rst week of June, According to camp director Shawn Hinkle, the majority of kids involved were from the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club. The camp provides participants (ages 8-11) with opportunities to fi sh, hike, swim, canoe, and meet new friends in a supervised outdoor environment. The camp is funded by donations.

McFarland Serves as Keynote Speaker at UAFS Graduation

Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club board member John McFarland, who is chairman and chief executive offi cer at Baldor Electric Company, was the Commencement speaker for the May 10th ceremony at University of Arkansas Fort Smith. More than 1,100 degrees and certifi cates were awarded. McFarland, who attended Westark Community College (now UAFS) and graduated from John Brown University, has been working at Baldor since 1970.

IMPROVEMENTS ATHUNTS PARK CONTINUE New parking lot lighting and renovations to the baseball concession stands are just some of the recent improvements at Hunts Park. During the past year, new restrooms & parking have been completed. The 61 year old facility is home of FSBGC football and baseball.

CHEWY CAFÉ DESIGNEDFOR HEALTHY KIDS

Chef Mack is back! After a June 19 visit to all four units at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Clubs, boys and girls are invited to join Chef Mack on the interactive website at chewycafe.com. Young people can learn new ways to develop their cooking skills, learn about food and nutrition, and have fun creating a life of wellness and good health. The Chewy Café is an exciting learning tool focusing on nutrition, cooking skills, language arts, science, math and writing that was introduced to FSBGC members last fall. The Chewy Café offers programs that contain entertaining and educational information that is easy, intriguing and fun to use. FSBGC staff members Elizabeth Easter (Goldtrap), Kari Fenby (Evans), Yvonne Blackmon (Jeffrey) and Darneisha Adams (Stephens) have been providing Chewy Café activities and recipes at each of the Clubs.

12th Annual Alumni Tourney

HOLE-IN-ONE PRIZEAWARDED DURING TOURNEY

For the fi rst time in tournament history a participant in the annual FSBGC Alumni & Friends Golf tournament has made a “hole-in-one”. Jason Pendelton, a member of the Simmons First team, shot a “hole-in-one” on number 8 to win a set of Callaway Big Bertha irons. The prize was provided by Putnam Lincoln Mercury. Pendelton used a 6 iron to make the 165 yard shot. A new Mercruy Milan was offered as a prize for a hole-in-one on number 2. Proceeds from the 2008 FSBGC Alumni & Friends Golf tournament will help support activities and services at the Boys & Girls Club. This year’s event will gross close to $30,000 with net proceeds estimated to reach $20,000. 140 golfers on 35 teams competed in the annual event. Originally scheduled for June 9, a rain storm caused the tournament to be moved to June 23. Through the support of First National Bank, Regions Insurance and Rheem, the golf tourney has become one of the favorite charity fund-raisers in the Fort Smith community.

ATHLETES IN THE NEWSKHAYYAM BURNS – recently signed an NFL contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. The former Boys & Girls Club standout athlete played college football at Arkansas State. His brother Kodi, is a quarterback at Auburn. Khayyam was a fi rst-team All-Sun Belt Conference selection as a college senior. The defensive back started 47 games during his college career, accounting for 331 tackles (192 solo), 5 interceptions and 4 fumble recoveries.

IAN GILLEY – was selected by the Atlanta Braves in the 2008 Major League baseball draft. Gilley, who was chosen in the 41st

round, is a star American Legion baseball player for Kerwins. He played youth baseball at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club and was a standout player at Northside High under coach Chad Frazier. He hit .545 for the Grizzlies with 5 home runs and 34 RBI’s. Gilley has also received College Scholarship offers to play baseball at Wichita State and Texarkana Junior College. Pro scouts are interested in developing Gilley as a catcher. “The chance to play professional baseball is a dream come true” he said.

CRAIG GENTRY – is playing centerfi eld for the Frisco Roughriders. The team is an AA affi liate of the Texas Rangers. Gentry is a former Razorback baseball star who once played American Legion baseball for Kerwins. Gentry also played two years for the UAFS Lions. During his childhood, he was an outstanding basketball player at Goldtrap-Gardner unit.

FRED PERRY – has been traded from the Grey Cup champion Saskatchewan Roughriders to the Edmonton Eskimos. Perry, a Canadian Football All-Star in 2006 and 2007, led his team to the Championship last season. The former Stephens Boys & Girls Club member has played the bulk of his professional football career in Canada. In 2002, he was a member of the Atlanta Falcons.

FRANQUA BEDELL – was named the assistant women’s basketball coach at Mississippi State University. Coach “Q” Bedell, is a former member of the Stephens Boys & Girls Club. He is a graduate of Southside High School. He played college basketball at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville. Last year, he was the head women’s coach at Southeastern Illinois College.

KEVIN LOMON – a former Major League baseball pitcher for the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets, has been named head baseball coach at Cameron (OK) High School. Lomon played Babe Ruth baseball at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club and attended UA Fort Smith, where he was drafted by the Braves in the 14th round. Lomon played professional baseball for 10 years.
